The reason the extended range makes the mustangs do better is a little funky Aside from RNG, the stormcallers fire there first volley, and then the stangs stop to shoot them down a bit further away from the stormcallers than they normally would. Then they move forward, the stormcallers fire again, and the missile interceptor range hasn't crossed over the missile spawn point, so the mustangs have maximum time to shoot down the missiles, so little to nothing goes through. Then the stangs move forward and latch onto the stormcallers, and if the latches are good they can kill 2 or 2 of the callers before the next volley comes out, so the very strained missile interceptor efficiency is still capable of keeping the stangs alive. This also holds true with the fangs in front, and gets better the bigger the distance is between the fangs and the mustangs, as ideally the stangs want some of first volley to hit the fangs, so they preserve interception efficiency for the next volley before closing for the kill. Still, it's quite RNG heavy, by mecha standards.

What about intercepting Overlords missiles?

Over all, I think you should probably go a lot slower, and come with a plan on how to test things. Some of the tests really seemed dependent on RNG. Almost all tests seems to be done only once with specific parametres. War factories make for poor AA if the stormcallers have emp. EMP will disable the anti-missile tech. Just needs 1 rocket to get through.
