When should you use an electrical fuel pump how should you mount it. When is your factory fuel pump not big enough. All good questions a little research will get you to the conclusion you are looking for. But just buying whatever from the parts store following zero of the directions to install it and acting like it was the only way to fix the problem . Will only create problems long term
Also hey this is my opinion and you can do whatever you choose be safe everybody and have a great day

Just an FYI. I have a tractor with a 1960's Chevy inline 6 swapped into it with a mechanical fuel pump, the diaphragm failed and dumped gas straight into the engine's oil, nearly causing an explosion. After some research, the consensus pointed to the new fuel nowadays is much more corrosive to the rubber diaphragm than fuel back in the day. Swapped it for an electric fuel pump, never an issue again.

I had a K5 blazer years ago. It had a car fuel pump on it. Later on, I put the truck one on, and it started a little faster during morning startups. The truck one has a deeper sump on it, were the car one has lower clearance for the frame. I loved that truck, despite the fact that one day the tailgate fell off into my hands. Then I couldn't get the window back up.

Fuel pumps don't have sumps. Also I've never heard of a car or truck pump being different.
@VitoVeccia
@VitoVeccia Жыл бұрын
The housing is nicknamed the "sump". If you check the parts catalog ( napa, Rock Auto, what ever you use ), look up a 1975 K5 Blazer 350. Then look up a 1975 Nova 350. You will notice that the blazer lists both short and deep sump fuel pumps. The Nova doesn't list the deep sump one, because of frame clearance. Hence the difference, between a car and truck fuel pump.

Electric fuel pumps like to push not pull that's why you mount them near the fuel tank preferably below the tank, mechanical fuel pumps like to pull! sometimes electric fuel pumps are necessary and convenient, I like them because it's less parasitic draw on the engine if you're shooting for every last little bit of HP, starter motor cranking time gets reduced so it saves your starter some stress, you can prime the system and fill the float bowls in your carburetor before you even start cranking if you have the electric pump wired to a switch, you can disconnect the line at your carburetor and drain your tank or flush your lines or just fill a little gas tank for your lawn mower just by running the pump! They definitely have their place! A good old-fashioned mechanical pump is great too especially considering to run an electric pump you really got to do some extra wiring they really do need a relay and either a breaker or fuse, and a fuel pressure regulator and sometimes a return line!
@Rool88
@Rool88 Жыл бұрын
They're really convenient if properly installed. I mostly use them in a "hybrid" combo, basically for priming the system to save the starter some effort, and once engine es running, the mechanical pump takes the spot

Completely agree. Hybrid system is my favorite. I can’t stand the sound of the electric pumps especially the high volume ones almost as much as I can’t stand the nagging from my family and gf about how I need to scrap my 68 chev and buy a Honda cervix or whatever neutered clown car they want me in when they hear my old car crank for more than 0.000001 of a second before it starts.

At the same time. My Dad back in the 90's started getting bad cast mechanical pumps for his 390FE. 3 or 4 times he got a split in the seam of the fuel pump 2 times squirting directly on the exhaust pipe leaving the manifold. Sometimes the electric fuel pump is a necessity. If one is needed, mount it near to and possibly lower than the fuel tank. The Ford flathead engines like to vapor lock in the hot humid summertime. The electric pump keeps this from occurring in most instances. Factory pumps were great, but living at the back of the engine bay on top of the intake manifold under a high domed hood of an early Ford, just made a perfect environment for hot fuel to get boiling hotter.

i like mechanical things too, the only thing i dislike about the stock pumps is that they tend to leak fuel into the engine oil after a while, might be hard to tell soon enough if the pump flows more fuel than your engine needs, i did a long trip in my 1979 toyota corolla once, the fuel economy was terrible, when i filled up the second time i checked the oil, it was black and a litre overfull (had just changed it before the trip) stank like fuel. so i had to ghetto an electric pump on, bypass the stock one and change the oil again to avoid engine damage from diluted oil, i think it did some damage already as the oil pressure isnt quite as good as it was before. but in any case, 10 years and another 100,000k later shes still running, dont drive her much, but its always in the back of my mind when i do

With electric fuel pump you have to look if there's any leaks in the fuel line. Sometimes they fill your trunk with gas or splash it behind the car. Mechanical pump just stops pumping if there's any leak - you'll see filter is filled with air and go through gas line Overheating problems and vapor-lock can be solved with a spacer, small radiator on top or just a wet cloth. We just used thermo-isolating spacer and that fixed the problem in our air-cooled V4 MeMZ on ZAZ-968. Ambient temperature sometimes go to 45-48•C and stock mechanical pump worked just fine))

Yeah, well my C3 Vette loves to boil the fuel in the carb during parades and hot summer cruises. After 12 years I put an electric fuel pump on it and a switch so when I was about to stop the engine I would kill the pump, let the car run for about 10 seconds and shut it off. Flip the pump on, and fire it right back up every time. No more embarrassing moments of having to pop the hood and fiddle with things to start it again. I do have the pump mounted by the tank and below it.

Electric fuel pumps prime the fuel system without cranking the engine. This is really nice on infrequently operated vehicles. On gasoline vehicles an oil pressure interlock with a momentary "prime" switch is a good idea. Less death by fire in a wreck that way. My pet peeve is absolutely crap wiring on most installations.

I had an 83 Fox Body I replaced the motor in. Old 302 had a mechanical pump. The replacement motor was out of a Thunderbird and was EFI. I swapped out the EFI intake manifold for my older carbed Weiand one. Didn't want to go through the trouble of converting the timing cover or replacing the camshaft. (The new motor had roller lifters and rockers so that was a plus. I just had to swap the drive gear on my vaccum advanced distributor. The new roller cam needed to mate with a bronze distributor gear. Otherwise the old steel one would have chewed up the teeth on the new cam.) After all that I just needed a low psi electric fuel pump for carburetor use. Got a good deal on one of the Holley Reds. Mounted it close to the tank and utilized the existing fuel line. It was wired up to a relay, which in turn was connected to a master switch on the dash. Did it this way as the car already had a bank of switches for the stereo and amp and whatnot. Plus it also allowed me to be in control of the fuel supply if I ever had a stuck throttle or whatever. A decent amount of work was involved for the whole conversion. But it gave me some good mechanical experience for only being 17 at the time. And you can't put a price on that.

Yes, but it's a different type of pump. Usually those mechanical pumps are a diaphragm type pump which can pull fluids unlike centrifugal pumps which I think is what that one in the video is. Peristaltic pumps are another type of pump that can be used as a 'lift pump' or one that can effectively suck fluid from a lower elevation
@putinslittlehacker4793

@@davidjolly5218 bolth the mechanical and electrical fuel pumps are diafram pumps. Centrifugal pumps need to be primed to pump and are generally in tank only units. @@putinslittlehacker4793 I think those external inline fuel pumps, like the one shown in the video, are actually rotor vane type pumps. But you're right that rotary vane and diaphragm pumps are both positive displacement types that probably have similar lifting capabilities. I guess that's why mechanical pumps are mounted so low on the engine block so that it is basically as low as the fuel tank to give that net positive suction head at the pump inlet

@@davidjolly5218 not too sure about american cars, but older japanese cars (nissan and toyota) tend to gravity feed the diaphragm pump on the engine, always gotta keep a 12mm bolt handy if the tank is above 1/8th as when you disconnect the hose the fuel just keeps flowing 😂 its good, means when you grab your beast thats been sitting for 20+ years in a field or shed, you can flush the stale fuel from the tank real easy from the engine bay, and prime the fuel pump at the same time. are carb'd american cars set up this way too?

@@Colt45hatchback ahh, I think you are right. American carb'd cars are the same as long as you keep the mechanical fuel pump setup. I have a '65 mustang, and I do recall having to block off the fuel inlet hose to the pump when I had to disconnect it or else it would just keep draining.

You have a point there but I was happy to find one in a small town in the middle of Wyoming. Not the same as my Gold Wing but it fit with an extra long hose and a couple of zip ties. No chance of finding the OE pump.

this is a totally unrelated question. can you give me a lil info on the 2000 chrysler sebring? the one i have was my grandmas car and they discontinued them in 2007 and i jus want some background knowledge about them to teach kids in the future about a not so popular car. And everyone ive meet that owned around the same year says they are falling apart except the engines witch i wont lie are pretty die hard for only 160whp

That’s a carbed engine. It’ll be fine on there cos it doesn’t need a lot of fuel pressure

Gravity fed pumps commonly fail due to them not having the correct mounting locations then most complain about it failing and blaming the manufacturer of the pump when they are at fault themselves.

Mechanical fuel pumps pull fuel too. But when the diaphragm ruptures it mixes fuel with the oil and wipes out the engine.

Some vehicles from the factory have 2 fuel pumps, lots of times the second fuel pump is indeed that far from the tank under the hood. I wonder if this guy looked to see if there was another one on this car. (Some pumps are designed with lift as well, or “pull” as he calls it). Getting fuel to the injectors, or carb). The Carb on this car looks pretty massive and non stock. It probably was cutting out due to not getting enough fuel flow, hence why the pump was added. All this said, I do agree that you probably shouldn’t have mounted it over the exhaust, however I don’t see where atleast the fuel hose could be mounted anywhere else..

My 79 jeep CJ-7 had an electric fuel pump because the cam lobe that ran the mechanical pump had worn down.

Mechanical fuel pumps work excellent, until they don't. I seriously don't trust them. Especially after an incident on a 71 350 that ran perfectly, until the mechanical fuel pump diaphragm was ruptured. Fuel was entering the crankcase and the end result was a spun rod bearing.

Many of time as a kid had my finger holding the pin for my dad to slam the fuel pump on with the pin in the right place…. Later they made a hole for a bolt 🤣 🤣 🤣
