There is a good reason beyond nostalgia that this intro resonates with so many of us. It's a crucial element missing from conventional story telling, especially in gaming. A true sense of danger. No catering to the greater will of the player/hero. Just two soldiers slaughtered by an unknown opponent, and it's done cinematically af. I fucking love this game.

This cinematic along with the Clans Wolf and Jade Falcon intros still give me chills to this day. This game was THE game of my childhood, haha. Oh god the memories, I remember my dad and I taking turns playing it, that was before the days where him and all other parents decided that videogames were evil. I still own the original disk, and I usually sink 12 hours or so into it about once a year for nostalgia purposes. I have the original soundtrack on my ipod as well.

Here's the weird thing: I missed a lot of the "We are Clan Wolf, Children of Kerensky, we are wardens, keepers of the plot armor, favorites of the franchise's writers" cut scenes because for some reason the audio in those cut scenes skipped on my computer. The in-game audio, and the above intro sequence, ran fine.

I was working in the gaming industry at the time and along with my colleagues, I attended the Activision Australia launch of MW2 at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney. We were all awed by this intro. It was gobsmacking to see it in broadcast quality on a big screen in an auditorium full of people. It gave us all chills. It happened on a Friday night from memory and a group of us spent the next weekend solidly playing the BattleTech pods at Intencity Hurstville. I survived on hardly any sleep and rubbish food, but came away fantastic memories that have stayed with me for 25 years.

The tone and atmosphere of Mechwarior 2 was so intense, dark and gripping. I've not seen a game replicate the feeling it gave me playing as a young kid. Whenever I booted up the game on my playstation I would never skip the intro scene, cause it got me hyped as fuck. I love the dark gregorian chanting, mixed with the thudding sound effects, the hopeless desperation in the other mech pilot as he begs for assistance only to be brutally incinerated,. The cold emotionless AI narrating the status of the mech and the grittyness of the visuals really makes this game stand out. I havent played the other mech games but I have a feeling even they don't quite capture the ambiance and gaming experience this variant of the game offers. And the best part? All of this actuallly translates to ingame play, and isn't just a trailer pulling its weight. It shows you what the game wants to offer and by god does it actually deliver.

Basically a PUG match d in a nutshell. Allied Timberwolf was dumb and charged into the fight too quickly and got teamed up on by two summoners and got heavily damaged. The Timberwolf in the intro soon reached the fight and one shotted the summoner that decided to be dumb and jumpjet straight into the air and get obliterated by the Timberwolf's 4 ER PPC alpha build before ghost heat patch. Of course the heat was still incredibly high and all he had left to fire with was the two paltry machine guns. Meanwhile the summoner had a arm mounter with actuators a CLAN AC 20 in its arm and at that super close range got lucky and scored a headshot. Trust me I know because I had this EXACT same situation happen in MWO on a map that looks very similar to this.

The first time I saw this intro I was thinking enough of the machine guns already they wont do much to a Summoner! I use to play the Fasa board game of MechWarrior with the dice for hit probability and the marking off hits to the armor with pencil. The first MechWarrior PC game was fun enough with bidding for jobs (don't overbid with House Kurita) and the simple and fun graphics. When you forget to put at least 3-4 tons of MG ammo.

When you forget to remove the MG entirely and replace it with weapons that don't suck in the mech editor.
@d.staten19587 жыл бұрын
EnigmaHood True. But some diehard Battletech Fans wouldn't considered mech editor.

I think they were AC2s Really, did he need four PPCs to take out the first summoner?
@d.staten19584 жыл бұрын
James Perkins AC2s shoot that rapidly?
@jamesperkins1914 жыл бұрын
Yeah ultracannons burn though ammo. 1 ton of ac2 ammo will gi ve about 45 shots - his mech has 2. We don’t know what ammo he expended before he fought the 4 Summoners either

Should have fired the PPCs again... NUB!!
@MegaRazorback9 жыл бұрын
the PPC cool-down is can be rather short OR long depending on how its set up to fire, but if Alpha Assaults was set for short, fast shots he would have 'cooked' his mech in 2-4 shots because each shot would have generated a lot of heat that the heat sinks couldn't bleed off in time and his reactor would have shut down to save itself from detonating.
@jimmywatsup15 жыл бұрын
@@MegaRazorback sounds like you overheated just writing that comment lol. Might wanna get your heatsinks checked out mate 😉

-Alfasol! This is Rob-O Cadet! An abandonned solo army c-c-c'you get down here?! -Sit tight Rob-O 3 I've got visual. -I've hit the evacuators out. Our targeting system's damaged! I'm in bad shape. [ENEMY DETECTED] -Training, Jule, Pete on the line! -Roger, I've got it. [TARGETING]

Good effort, but a bit off. "Alpha Assault, this is Bravo Cadet. I got bandits all over me! You get down here!" "Sit tight Bravo 3, i've got visual" "Half the actuators are out, targeting system's damaged. I am in bad shape" [ENEMY DETECTED] "Behind me, 2 of them! {unintelligible}" "Roget, i've got it"

Bullshit, everyone knows that Madcats/Timber Wolves are all about rockets.
@armoredp8 жыл бұрын
+Spectans1 Originally yes, LRM20 on the shoulders and the 2 arms have large lasers. But there are configurations with PPC, I used to run one myself back in the day.
@jessicanoll35778 жыл бұрын
And IIRC the PPC variant had huge heat issues, hence switching to the MG's while he waited for his sinks to cool. Foolish to just keep chasing the summoner though. Run, get outta range, cooldown!
@devin7tm8 жыл бұрын
So this mech has 2 PPC and 2 Machine guns.. with the LRMS i suppose.. Bro your build is BAD! LMFAO :)
@MegaRazorback8 жыл бұрын
that particular build was made for medium/long range engagements, not close range fights like this. The Madcat was never intended as a front-line brawler anyway, it was more of a support class mech what with its PPC's and LRMS pods. this guy had NO chance what so ever going up against what looks like a Summoner mech, those things are pure in your face brawler mechs with the SRM pod and other close range weapons.
@Ishlacorrin8 жыл бұрын
Summoner.... ER PPC. LB10X AC And a LRM 15.... not exactly a brawler. Timber Wolf Prime had 2 ER Large Lasers, 2 ER Med, 2 Machine guns and 2 LRM 20s, this build is non standard but the summoner was still Prime.
@MegaRazorback8 жыл бұрын
the LB10X AC has two ammunition types it can use, a standard slug or a "buckshot" round. so it can either be used at med range with the slug or for those who prefer the up close and personal, the "buckshot".
@Ishlacorrin8 жыл бұрын
Actually the scatter shot was just as effective at long range. Getting closer didn't help more shots hit only the cluster itself. At least in TT that was true. In the MW2 games Autocannons at all were a bad weapon because of how fast they went through ammo and the LBX couldn't switch ammo either.
@MegaRazorback8 жыл бұрын
in MW3 i think and i know that in MW4 the LB10X AC only ever shot the "buckshot" rounds.
