On June 11, 2024, Hydrogen Europe's Brussels headquarters hosted the second Industrial Advisory Board meeting and the third Steering Committee of the MED-GEM Network. In just one year since its launch by the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR), the project, funded by the European Union and directed by Frank Wouters, has emerged as pivotal to advancing green hydrogen initiatives in the Mediterranean. It has expanded partnerships across eight countries, with plans to include two more, focusing on creating a unified hydrogen agenda, navigating the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and fostering inter-regional collaboration.
The network collaborates closely with governments, ministries, and state institutions through National Focal Points, actively involving the private sector. Industry representatives regularly exchange insights on their countries' challenges and opportunities in aligning with EU policies and goals.
Within the EU Green Deal and RePowerEU frameworks, the Mediterranean region holds significant strategic importance for Europe’s hydrogen strategy. However, achieving this vision requires supporting neighboring southern countries in local development before export.
Currently, the MED-GEM Network team is preparing to launch its next pillar focused on Finance and Investment, offering valuable insights into funding opportunities for green hydrogen projects while providing technical assistance and capacity-building.
