Read a few stories/accounts about medal of honor winners (posthumously) and on almost every account, those around them mentioned they always have this calm demeanor, an almost surreal calm about them right before they died. Some have even mentioned to others in the same calm fashion, that they knew they were going to die in the next battle and totally accepted the fact. Athletes, artist call this the zone. I also believe that these warriors go through a similar "zone" in that moment of clarity, that allows them to see the objective, the battlefield and the commitment to total greatness and sacrifice! Semper Fi!

I’ve met two Medal of Honor recipients in my lifetime. Both of them were among the most humble of people I’ve ever met. I’ve been in a combat zone many times. It is loud, frightening and completely disorienting at times. How these people drum up this level of courage in circumstances most of us can’t fathom is beyond me. It comes down to one simple thought process- I can’t let my fellow Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, or Airmen down. They are depending on me as I depend on them!

Netflix needs to add more to this series. There are so many brave soldiers who've earned that medal and deserve to have their stories told. We were only shown far less than 1% of those men. I'm a Canadian and a patriot to my country. But, I have great respect for those willing to go above and beyond the call of duty with courage, regardless of the flag they wear on their uniform.

My list of choices: CPL Tibor Rubin, SGT David Bleak, SSG Roy Benavidez, SFC Paul Ray Smith, CPL Dakota Meyer, SPC Salvatore Giunta, 2nd LT Audie Murphy, PFC Jacklyn Lucas, 2nd LT Walter Joe Marm, LTC Robert Cole, 1SG Leonard Funk Jr, SM1 Douglas Munro, SSG David Bellavia, SP4 Alfred Rascon, 1st LT Daniel Inoyue, SP5 Lawrence Joel, CPO Edward Byers, MSG Woodrow Keeble, the list keeps going on. At least get a few of these fine heroes. Any other? Who’s got a Medal of Honor recipient story that they want to hear?

As a non American, I feel like a huge piece of apple pie with vanilla ice-cream just about now. I was at a College (University) Football game in 2014. It was held in Tampa Bay Florida's James Ray stadium which is around 60,000 capacity. 60,000 people watching 17 year old's. That alone is mental. Anyway, before the game as lead up, they had 6 wounded war veteran's presented to the packed house. Each veteran had injuries worse than the previous. The last veteran was presented by his father who served in Vietnam. They were both seriously injured. The father with a missing leg and arm. His son was blinded and missing an arm. The whole stadium. THE WHOLE STADIUM went bonkers! I have never witnessed anything like it in my whole life. Just on queue, as the father & son reached the side line four Navy Jets flew over and fireworks went off around the whole stadium. Nobody does build up on a grand scale like the Americans. Every body around me had tears rolling down their face. I tell you it was fucking nuts.

I understand it’s because there are veterans still alive that tell the tales, but if you’re gonna talk about the Medal of Honor, you need to go back to where it all started: The Civil War *FUN FACT* Close to half of the nearly 3,500 Medal of Honor’s were given during the Civil War

@zanzhin1561 5 жыл бұрын
The Medals of Honor issued during the Civil War (and subsequent Indian Wars) are usually not considered as important to historical discussions because they were awarded at a time when virtually no other military decoration was authorized. In that period, the MOH was the single "general purpose" award given for situations that would not come close to meeting the highly elevated standards established for the MOH in the future. Later, a system of ranked medals were approved to honor valor and distinctive service by both individuals and units that while significant, do not meet the criteria of the Medal of Honor. Unfortunately, like everything run by a government of humans, it's a flawed process... certainly not every soldier who deserves one gets the Medal. There are many acts of valor that meet the criteria for the MOH, but their officers are busy fighting a war and don't do the paperwork necessary. And the system of review can be easily politicized and blocked. For example, a soldier whose actions meet the criteria for the MOH could be presented a lower one because someone in the higher command feels that a unit has been getting too many awards for a specific campaign, and so discretionary limits are imposed. Or, in a hypothetical situation, a higher officer in the review chain may have a personal or professional issue with the officer submitting the nomination and decide to deny it because the presentation of a MOH to a soldier is a direct and positive reflection on the unit's Chain of Command. Because it is so selective and so high an honor, the Medal can unfortunately be used as a political tool, because politicians live to benefit from the accomplishments and sacrifices of others. For example, the MOH can be awarded to a service member from a certain Congressional district as a Presidential "thank you" for that Congress member's support of the administration's pet policy, or to help make an unpopular POTUS more favorable to the Military overall, or even to help get a state or region to vote for his party when elections come around. Not to say that any modern service member receiving the MOH wasn't fully deserving, but that another soldier whose valor equally met the criteria may have been denied it as a Presidential "thumb in the eye" to his Congressional representative who's in the opposing political party. The recent SCOTUS confirmation process makes it very clear just how far politicians will stoop to fight each other.

This is just an excuse to raise nationalistic feelings. What wars were this people fighting? Were they protecting their homes or were they just pawns for invading other countries in the "name of freedom"? Your governtment gives you the illusion of democracy, while being controled by a plutocracy. You, Americans, live in a bubble and in a myth built to make you gullible and easy to control. Your governtment has interfered countless times in other countries with the excuse of protecting democracy. Just look what happened in my country, Chile, in other Latinamerican countries, and in African countries. Your leaders fucked our lives and still control us today. That's why America is so despised all over the world. But you'll still be blinded by movies like this one, idealizing and idolizing the life of a soldier. I know you citizens are just victims in this, but please, be aware of the history of suffering caused by your leaders under bad excuses and with the help of innocent soldiers like these ones. Please, acknowledge that your governtment's main goal is to increase and ensure their political and economic power; democracy, freedom and patriotism have nothing to do with it.

Lol you are telling what's obvious to American. Their recruitment numbers go down and down year after year. Their voting turnout shrink every 4 year too. They already know their government is a bunch of corrupt shit. At any given time, roughly 50% of the US have anti government sentiments and the other half will cry about throwing some senators into prison. You cant find more "alterntive news" anywhere outside the US (Except maybe India and China but that's not per capita) and the numbers of politicians getting persecuted in the US is second to none due to predatory media and partisan fighting en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_federal_political_scandals_in_the_United_States. But the truth is: that corruption and brutality doesnt even touch them. Their soldiers are essentially government employees after Vietnam. Employees with really generous benefit at that. And employee do what employers tell them to do. And all their action, why might affect you greatly, dont affect Americans at large. A stock market crash has more chance to fuck over American life than a 20 year war with trillions of dollar and million of lives lost. It's like Rome. They were fucking corrupt, expansionist and brutal. Every Romans know that but why would you risk your comfortable life going for a floppy goal? It's not until the government was weakend by a millions cut to the point of being unable to protect and support their life that they split the Empire. Spoiler: their life didnt become much better, proving their inaction right. Meanwhile, living and prospering with American foreign policy is entirely possible, like Canada, Oceania, New Europe, Japan, Korea, South East Asia, China, Qatar, ... (contrary to popular belief, Vietnam war ended because Reagan found a temporary allies in China to weaken the Soviet. The catch is embrace China economically and let China have Indochina. The masterplan that bite US in the ass today Can you see the pattern of American foreign policies already?) So be real, you can totally make US foreign policy work for you. Politic isnt a civilsed classroom debate. Dont poke the bully with righteous fury if you are just a day of flight from him. Unlike school this bully is more than ready to kill you.

HipsterHolocaust That's exactly what I meant when I said soldiers are simple pawns in the political chessboard of governments (and not only America's). For me, the only war worth fighting is the one where your people and your territory is being invaded and attacked, because in that case you're actually defending your freedom. These soldiers (the ones in the documentary) were not. They were involved in conflicts that were not their own. Even nazi soldiers should be condecorated under the excuse that they were serving their country and doing what was asked to do. I guess we all know that those low rank nazi soldiers were not the masterminds behind the operations; they were just following orders, and there's nothing honorable in that. But that doesn't take away the responsability of their deeds. If they take a life, they should be hold accountable for that. If they really were against killing innocent people, they have the option of refusing to follow orders, even if that costs their own lives. Remember Desmond Doss, whose story was told in the movie "Hacksaw Ridge"? He refused to take innocent lives and even helped his fallen comrades. Yes, it took some effort and time for his beliefs to be accepted as valid reasons to avoid holding a gun, but he did it at the end.

Richard D This is just an excuse to raise nationalistic feelings.

@@B1SpkTKD I would be the last person to defend most wars, but this is not about that. This is about paying respects to the men and women who sacrifice all with incredible courage for what they perceive to be doing the right thing, whether that is true or not.

Richard D If the cause is unfair, why should I honor the executors of that unfairness? There's no courage nor honor in being the pawns of a corrupt governtment. But this critique it's not against soldiers, but against people who think nationalist and soldiers are heroes. They just do what their told to do. There's nothing brave in supporting foreign interventions and transgression to other countries' sovereignty.

For the many years I served as a police instructor and these words were posted on my wall. Not everyone who read them understood but many who did were true warriors and humanitarians. “Of every one hundred men [they send me], ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are nothing but targets, nine are real fighters… We are lucky to have them… They make the battle. Ah, but the one, one of them is a Warrior… and he will bring the others back.” ― Heraclitus

Look at the best movies out and compare cultural narratives. The most common one is the "Triumphant Individual" and proof of this lies not only in the quantity of movies but in American beliefs. Look up the studies on students preferring solo work over group work. You'll find the majority prefers to work alone. Same as in the workplace. It's so apparent, companies push the "You can move up" idea into new workers at orientation. It promises that if you work hard yourself, you can make it. They'l tell you that before and/or after telling you to maintain a team. All of these responsibilities put you in the position to feel like you're taking things over, the triumphant individual. What this movie pushes is what Americans and many other countries forget, the very thing that made us all so great. We are forgetting the "common man" narrative and the problems we face that makes us triumphant individuals, notice the plural. America isn't the "One man" every movie trailer talks about, it's the cluster of common folk who wanted change for a better world. People who love each other enough to take a bullet and die off radar where no one knows what happened. No one but the survivor. That's why this movie's great.

Those men who have fought their hearts out for those fighting beside them and their country’s, I cannot bestow enough respect and admiration upon them. To lay down their lives for a great cause, sends that shiver up my spine. This show is awesome and more than captures the stories of these great individuals. I’d highly recommend it and would be surprised if tears didn’t form in the eyes of every viewer. I recall when I was just four, attending a military cemetery and placing a single flower on as many white crosses as I could. I’ve always harboured a seemingly innate respect for the sacrifice those men had to give to rid the world of evil.

I can’t watch this without tearing up. My granddaddy was in WWII, Marine 1st D, 1St Sgt. He had a couple of medals stashed away in a bottom drawer, literally, I used to check out his boots, mess kit, canteen, etc (he may or may have not taken with him a service rifle with the help of some buddies).. Wink I asked him about “The War” after he asked me if I had been checking his “things”, I was scared because snooping around isn’t polite, plus I was 7. He said “I guess I can tell you now…” He had a many stories, many were funny, good memories (à la Life is Beautiful, where he made them kid-oriented), some were awful (as some years passed). One of those stories was about a battle after “storming a beach”, he explained that one of his friends (fellow soldier) got “hurt” (later I learned that “hurt” meant bullet holes) and he couldn’t run anymore. There were many explosions, shooting, etc. I asked him “was he hurt bad, grandpa, what did you do? We’re you scared of being hurt?”. He said “of course, being afraid makes us human, but you never let fear stop you from what you must do. I grabbed my “friend” and brought him back to a safer place. I hear that old man saying “because of our friendship, I knew he’d take care of me”…. Wow, just wow. I can hear my grandaddy’s voice, after taking a pause staring at the distance, surely reliving the moment, saying “he said “take cover, sir..and I told him “you’re going home” “… One of those days he said to me: “Take care of your brothers and family, not just the ones related to you”. Man…I sure hope I can one day measure up to him. I feel like I should have talked to him more, though I did spend at least half of my weekends at his house up until I was 20, when he died in a car crash, 31 May 1995. I have missed him every day, with a smile. Thank veterans for their sacrifices.
