My Wife is from Medellin, I have been going there for 3 years already I stay wih my inlaws and I love it!! I am thinking of retiring there. The USA is getting very expensive!!!

We have 12 years retired just outside of Medellin in a Pueblo. Living here has been a wonderful experience and much better than I ever expected.

Nice timing. I’ve been here in Medellín for the past month. I’ve been to 50 states as 50 countries and have Medellin firmly in the #1 spot in the world. The people are amazing, there is green vegetation throughout the city, and the weather is perfecting you like 70-75 degrees year round. I’ve visited all the Latin American countries including many parts of Ecuador (including a month in late 2022). Colombia, especially Medellin, is much safer, greener, and the people are friendlier in my opinion than Ecuador. Also, Ecuador has permanent clouds in some areas whereas Colombia has sunshine and blue skies.

Colombia has some of the highest annual rainfall totals in the world, but I like the rain there, no draught, clean water, and lots of breaks in the rain so you can get outside. And warm!

Ken - love your post buddy. My wife is from Medellin, and as of now, I have still not visited Colombia. We had 3 horrible incidents happen to direct family and friends in Medellin. Also, her other relatives describe a few incidents where the drive-by motorcycle bandits point a gun and steal their possessions on hand. I guess I am writing to ask for your thoughts on this and what you and the friends you have met feel about this. Regardless I want to visit, and I think it will be in the Fall of this year because I also believe it will tick the most important box that I have for any city I am considering a place to own and visit more often = The Best Weather! I mean geez it is right near the Equator which if down by the beach, means way to hot and humid.....but because it is 5k feet up it is a perfect year-round 70 with lower humidity. Even better then Quito and Cuenco IMO.

Sorry but the weather is NOT 70-75 Year around. That may be written and maybe once it was but now mid 80’s is common. Eternal Spring is no longer the case but the title remains.

I am from Cuenca-Ecuador. I have visited different cities around the world. In my opinion, the best experience is traveling, getting to know new cultures, people, learning new languages, etc. "Life is short and it is only one" My favorite foreign city in the world is Medellín. People are very friendly there. I forgot how many times I have visited "Medallo"; seven or eight times maybe...

I am an American who has made Medellin my home, all the comments you have made are spot on. However, you left out a few spots that make Medellin and its surrounding area priceless. Nature here is abundant and one of the most popular things to do is to visit the hundreds of little colonial towns just a couple of hours away. Cascades and rivers are also a popular attraction with hundreds of spots to visit. Overall, Medellin is a 💎 gem and am glad you have made a video of this wonderful retirement heaven.

I agree, Medellin is a great place to retire, I go there very often, by the way I will be there for Father's Day , my wife works for AA so I fly for cheap. I am looking to buy an appartment there a 2 bedroom would be enough. Love Medellín! ❤️!!!

I miss Medellin so much. My father's office used to be not too far from el poblado. Colombia is the greatest country for bird watching Thailand is second. That's based on the number of birds you can spot.

Great video about Medellín. We're blessed to be able to retire with time in Colombia, now 4 years. You guys hit a perfect story about the city of eternal spring. The culture, food, traffic, dogs, motorcycles, environments, spanish, tourism... all spot on! And we are personal friends with your tour guide Juan Camilo, great choice. Interesting note on the dog culture here, about 3 decades ago the streets were filled with strays, the people, in the renaissance post Escobar, set high ethical standards for the treatment of voiceless creatures that share the land with us, no Bull fighting, no circus animals, and a successful and continuing campaign to help the strays in the city. It's not perfect but you can see the real success. And it's a microcosm of the effort to address the human challenges and opportunities. As example, the world class metro system focused it's first efforts on the barrios with the biggest socioeconomic challenges. The mobility and access to jobs, health care, policing and more being the realized plan to bring opportunity to those in the most need. A final 5 year phase of construction will bring metro service to Laureles, Belén and other more middle class and affluent barrios. And, traffic sucks, walk or take the metro, let someone else drive 🤓. On the weather, JP said jungle, exactly, we said, Big Island of Hawaii. Except for the elevation difference the weather here reminds us a lot of Hawaii, only a touch better. The more time I spend with the Colombian people and places, especially Medellín, the more time I want here. 🙏🙏🙏👍🤗

And a hell of a lot cheaper than HI, while still modern and cooler. Traffic in any large city can be horrible, even in Orlando FL. At around 4,000,000 people (officially, is larger than most cities in the US. Enjoy your hard-earned retirement! 👍

I have my base in the south of Cali, and Airbnb to all places in Colombia...after 30 years in the overrated and expensive life in USA. You just need to be careful like any other country....but overall is safe....😊

1. Yes, Armenia Quindio is more affordable and the people are very pleasant. Have you visited any of the termales near Pereira / Dos Quebredas in nearby Risaralda? Such as Santa Rosa de Cabal or San Vicente? 2. Have you tried the "Reed" or "Collins" variety of avacado? 3. When I would hike above Envigado and Sabaneta I could distinctly see the pollution in the areas torwards el centro. It was this thick brown cloud that made me pause and think.

Medellin has way more expats while Bogota is more than double in size and more urban. I actually prefer Bogota then places like Poblado. I tend to stay away from the tourists,

I was very happy the four days I spent in Medellin about 7 years ago. It truly is a marvel. It also looks like several additional restaurant venues have sprung up. Parque lleras was amazing in the evening ❤

I spent 2 months in Medellín last year. It was interesting, but ultimately not the right place for me. Not sure if you went to the Oviedo mall close to Santa Fe...it is even more beautiful in my opinion - they really bring the jungle-like environment inside and you feel surrounded by nature. I am not a huge mall person, which is one reason I got a little bored in the city...but Oviedo impressed me. That, and the cable cars all over the city. The cable car ride to Parque Arvi is breathtaking.

@@TheSlashSlingingSlasher After awhile all the brick high rises started to feel a little monotonous. I like more eclectic architecture, older historical buildings, etc. And while I never had any security issues, you hear stories all the time. I felt like I needed to be on guard constantly. The centro is really sketchy…reminds me of downtown LA. Overall I prefer Bogota - it feels much more diverse to me. That’s just my preference though.

Oviedo is a beautiful comercial space. The malls are amazing, we use them as an oasis from the rain and refueling stops. There are many and all the ones I know are dog friendly.

I'm surprised that you guys were surprised at the amount of digital nomads here. Digital Nomads were really the ones who put the word out on Medellin. It's a top 3 digital nomad city along with Chiang Mai and Bali. Even when I first came in 2018, there were lots of digital nomads here. It's a great city for remote working.

i love medellin, it's an amazing city! It's so easy to make friends there. El Poblado, is the most expensive area of the city. Lots of malls everywhere. Santafe Mall is the best. The botero plaza is beautiful, the Museum of antioquia is free to enter. and has other botero artwork and other south american artists. Great video coverage guys. El Castillo tour is totally worth it, it's beautiful inside and it's an incredible story

I've been to both Cuenca and Medellin. They are both beautiful cities but in different ways. Medellin has been well known for its digital nomad community. When I went, pre-Covid, they had a monthly meet-up that would draw over 100 people. It is spotlessly clean and the tap water tastes much better than the heavily chlorinated water that comes out of my tap here. But Cuenca has a more cohesive and robust expat community.

For us, and don't get me wrong, I can slide into an expat group and enjoy that immensely because of the ease, but we chose Medellin in part because the expat community here is more diffused and percentage wise still small, somewhere around 1%. We wanted to immerse (force, lol) ourselves to be more socialized in the language and a Colombian bario culture. Laureles is hardly pioneering today with a wealthy professional class, and upper middle class, and a smatering of expats and retirees, but like most of Colombia, your much better off if you speak at least a street smart level of Spanish.

You need to be very careful in Colombia about using non-official transportation. In Bogota, I once had an impostor taxi driver drive me to the middle of a very dangerous barrio and threatened to leave me there unless I paid them an extra amount of money. The police did nothing about it. I love Colombia, and will be relocating there and in Ecuador and the Dominican Republic in 2023. I have been visiting South America since 2009, and found it always important to have a local traveling companion to keep you out of trouble and avoid gringo pricing.

I agree; I have visited Medellin one time last year. Eager to leave the airport and go to my room some ‘taxi guy’ saw me waiting and said he was a taxi. He took me safely to my destination. However, I got ripped off with his price.

I felt like I got ripped off by a taxi in Guatemala with the overpricing because they saw a gringo. Therefore, I really prefer to take public transport, if possible.

It's respectful to speak Spanish but it opens the door to the real Colombia when you talk to locals I understand it works both ways and I always speak English in Florida except maybe little Havana of course but Medellin had changed just keep your heads up I'm not saying it's really bad like before 2000 but just use street smarts and you'll love Colombia.✌🏼

I’ve been to Medellin three times. I love the city but to say it’s clean and doesn’t smell is a stretch. The air pollution at street level can be suffocating. The smell of human doo around some of the parks is strong. A great city for young folks. I preferred the smaller cities in Colombia.

Bucaramanga is Medellin without the hype and without the all pervasive US chains. A pleasant place just to walk around and feel you are in Colombia and not a transplanted shopping mall.

I'm glad Amelia & JP found Medellin a great city.It was clean throughout the 70's when I lived there.There 2 companies doing street cleaning in those days,"the empressas varias" wearing orange uniform,even the vehicles were orange ,and the " empressa municipal".Glad,still is clean.I'm the Amelia & JP reversed case".I'm colombian,left in 1982,bought a house in Denver(Aurora),still have it but the city has changed a lot,not for the good reasons.The whole US is different,so many people from so many countries so different from americans."I dont feel in Kansas anymore""Where have you gone Mrs amelia"? remember Simon & Garfunkel?.Now I understand you,why you left.Great video.Happy to hear from you guys.Ciao.

Glad you finally visited Medellín. I like Estadio, residing at a 6 minute walk to the 11 swimming pools and Sundays Zumba at the stadium (one of 3 futbol fields). That Olympica complex with futbol, swimming pools;, has 10 + tennis courts, 6 gymnasium buildings, & various other athletic fields. The Sunday Cyclovia has many kilometers of dedicated roadways in the Valley de Aburra; Poblado is a part of that valley.

Great video. It reminds me so much of where I was living in Mexico City. I don't speak Spanish but used Google Translate for clarity and to read labels in the shops when needed. I was so touched by shopkeepers in my area that every time I saw them they had learned new English words so they could converse with me.

Sadly there's a large unhoused community here, affected greatly by the Venezuelan economic collapse and corruption. But there are efforts to help, and for better or worse,keep them out of the touristy places like Poblado.

So glad you came here! Surprised me that you came! So happy! looks like you found Manill in Poblado too. I have spent my 5 yrs here in Laureles the flat area. Funny the sidewalks must be terrible in Ecuador. We have a saying in my house you must always look down in medellin. The second you dont you will get tripped up Never fails!

Thanks for the info. We totally get the workout involved when living in a hilly area! We're currently in Ecuador and looking at going to Colombia - just trying to figure out the details. Great to know more about Medellin and its neighbourhoods.

Medellin is surely the most developed city in the country. However, there are neighborhoods that represent traditional Colombia better.

Hi Amelia & JP! It was an unexpected pleasure meeting you on the sidewalk during your walkabout in Poblado. I have watched many of your reels and feel you are 2 of the best. I like your cutaways to your street footage, it gives your videos a nice rhythm from the other “talking heads!” Thanks for being so gracious to chat with me! Did you get to Comuna 13? That was a pretty cool place! I was a little paranoid shooting my photos and video with my Apple 14 Pro Max but I never had problems. But people were warning me all the time and the motorcycles flying by reminded me of your robbery in Mexico. Still,I preferred the phone to my A6600 Sony and 105 lens! Keep it up, you might eventually convince me to visit Ecuador! But I will be visiting Medellin again! PS, I took a nice luxury bus from Medellin to Bogota,bought 2 tickets so I could sit alone, around $30 total. A great way to see the countryside!

The bird you mentioned probably was a parrot (they have several native species in Antioquia) or a toucan...And you didn't miss anything at El Tesoro. Nice mall, but it's the most obscenely priced venue I have ever been in. (El Poblado in general is jacked.) They wanted almost $50 USD for a pair of chanklas at "Payless Shoes"... 🤣 ...If you get back to "Medallo", a trip up the teleferico (or Metrocable) to the Biblioteca España is pretty amazing, although I wouldn't recommend venturing into the neighborhoods nearby. You can catch that from the Metro itself (Estación Santo Domingo, if I remember correctly). The Pueblito Paisa is interesting, and from the hill you watch the planes landing BELOW you at the Olaya Herrera airport...I normally hang out in the "real Medellín" - across the river in Floresta. Same cool stuff without the gringo pricing...Keep having fun guys...

The bird that he was referring to is probably the "guacamaya azul verde". I have seen them fly by my balcony in pairs. They have a very distinct and recognizable call. There are also the green "loros" parrot that would eat fruit in the trees outside of my balcony in Envigado. There are other amazing birds that I would see on my hikes and bike rides. I also urge visitors to try the "Reed" and "Collins" avacados which have an amazing creamy taste. I personally do not like the larger light green colored avacados "Lorena" / "Papillon" ( cannot remember exact name of variety) that have a slightly sweet taste and more water.

What was schocking for me in Colombia is that the sun goes down in 30 sec and then its pitch dark. Does anyone know why that is. Otherwise I love the country and the people. ❤

Yes, the sun goes down at 6:00 pm and goes up at 6:00 because it's very close to the equator, no seasons no longer or shorter days!

@nubaran no it cannot be the distance from the equator. I lived in Aruba have been in Venezuela and in Asia in several countries at the equator but the sun sets the same everywhere except colombia where I have been to so far. Can't figure out why but sure not the equator it would be the same in the surrounding countries or in other countries that are close to the equator.

Traffic jams and motorcycles are everywhere, even the small towns. I just got back to the US from a 3 week trip that covered several towns and cities in Colombia. I really enjoyed Bogota and I also went to the Coloma coffee plantation in Fusagasuga. Great experience... I really got tired of the Colombian traditional foods, which is mostly all you find in the smaller towns. My favorite place we went to for food was Andre Carne de Res. Its a really great place with great food.

Bogota is the best city in Colombia, and in two hours drive from the capital you find pueblos, villages with summer weather all year round.

@@hipmoma I grew up in NY and some winters up there are truly freezing. Google average temperature in Bogota and is, 8 to 20 °C (46 to 68 °F), You have to be kidding if you think that's freezing, actually Bogotas weather is perfect for outdoors activities.

@@william8236 I'm from NY also but we have cozy homes and heat everywhere. Bogota does not. I am stating how I felt there and it was "uncomfortable" and similar to San Francisco during the summer: moist, chilly, rainy, and just not cozy. Greetings from Florida :)

@@hipmoma You make no sense, you wrote that "Bogota it's always freezing weather" that is a complete exaggeration especially from someone who knows what freezing weather is like. Let me tell you what Bogotas weather is really like, in the early morning it starts at around 40s at worst, during the day it can go up to 80s, and in the night at worst in can fall to 40s. Now if you think I am exaggerating about the 80s look around at all modern buildings and hotels with Air Conditionings on the roofs. You mention Florida I live in Florida now, I can't stand this freaking humidity and hot weather, so I know the feeling of both extremes cold and hot weather, and I will stay with a weather like Bogota, where you don't sweat like a cow and when it gets cold all you need is a light jacket.

Add a comment... EMS S 0 seconds ago There is a bus outside the arrivals area of the airport that will take you directly downtown to El Centro or you can get dropped of in El Pueblato. It's a much cheaper then the taxis and very safe. Get a cab when you get then there. We stayed for 3 weeks in December and loved it! Great video!!

You guys missed out on the Museo Castillo. . .it was phenomenal, and afterwards we enjoyed the Cafe in the gardens. You should go on the Castle tour next time. . .well worth it.
