Medfield State Hospital Story & Tour Shutter Island Location

I visited Medfield State hospital over the summer and toured it's massive grounds. Join me as I recap my experience at a place that was used in the 2010 movie Shutter Island. Also, in this video is a brief history of the Kirkbride Mental Hospitals across the state of Massachusetts and how they relate to the Medfield asylum which was built under a different version known as the cottage plan.

I lived there for 6 months for filming of Shutter Island ( as Nurse Marino). Medfield. Very disturbing space.

This is where it was shot! I asked to stay the night there to get the feel of the place. It felt haunted...sad...broken.

Nellie Sciutto Hi Nellie, much debate over Shutter Island, as to Leo Decaprio's role. I have a question, if he is actually sane, but then gets conditioned once he arrives on the island, or, has he always been on the island, but they make him out to think he lived a dual life. What is your take on this? Thank you in advance if you answer.

Did my nursing school psych rotation at Medfield in 1979. Back then, it was one of the most peaceful places you can imagine. There is so much more than what the history books can tell you about the hospital. It is one of the most precious memories I will carry with me for the rest of my life. To Marty: At last the voices have been silenced. RIP

Really great video. I walk up here with my dogs all the time and completely enjoy how utterly peaceful it is. It would be such a shame if the cottages are torn down and McMansions built on this wonderful property. I realize that some of the land is contaminated but in my soul I truly wish it would just be left alone. Or in an ideal world purchased and rehabilitated…

TTG, according to the director, the idea was to leave the ending up to the viewer. Some saw it one way. Some the other. Make sense?

I love visiting Medfield and walking around although alot has changed there in the past two years alone.

really nellie, I was a patient there in the 70's. twice, try some prolixen or haldol and then tell me how disturbing it is. good movie by the way. mike

In Foxboro, they used to have a Halloween haunted house at the State Hospital… creepy. Only time I was in there

I've been up inside the clock tower,and several buildings when the place was functioning. It was quite a place......

These buildings are absolutely beautiful and it blows my mind that the state has allowed them to deteriorate. Why not sell them?

You know haunted houses and stufs losses more then 50% of its value specially when its such a known place as shutter island i mean just imagine how many people have taken their lifes in there and you know how it is once someone takes their life by their own hands inside a building their bodies and soul are locked into the building forever because of the big sin of taking your life by yourself god punishes you and lets you be stuck in the same building thats why people that senses paranormal activity most of the time arent joking its just ignorant people that thinks its a joke you either have to bring witches with their witchcrafts and perform a exorcism to make thedemons disappear you have to fight fire with fire

I wonder why Massachusetts had so many state hospitals ? Danvers was quite the place. Shame it fell into total disrepair from the elements and vandalism.

I believe one of the locations they used is in Squantum, MA.

This is the place they used for the movie in shutter island,I lived nearby it's in Medfield,MA

The main building they used with the clock tower is the Lee Building. They made a few temporary modifications to the building, but it's still very recognizable in the movie, and is now back to it's original state. Some of the surrounding buildings are also very recognizable to those who are familiar to the hospital. While watching the movie, I spent more time looking for familiar places than I did paying attention to the plot. Oops!

They didnt always allow visitors.....we got chased out of there by security. Fun day.

Hey man ther is an old one out by the university of connecticut. I can't remember the exact name but if you look it up you will find it. Google Mansfield, CT insane asylum.

I say bulldoze it and then let Mother Nature have it. We humans try way too hard to live everywhere, even when not wanted.

Decembirth no I live in that town they're not going to bulldoze that they have future plans to keep the buildings but completely remodel them and put in new supports making it either a community college or apartments
