Taylor being absent for most of the film was another demand made by Charlton Heston. When originally approached for the sequel, he asked if Taylor could be killed in the first scene; they eventually convinced him to let Taylor go missing in the first scene and then show up again at the end. Most of the original scripts for this movie had much happier endings. Basically, it roughly goes the same as the finished product until it gets to the end. Therein, when Taylor warns Dr. Zaius about the bomb, Zaius actually listens and agrees to help, but is then shot by Ursus. Taylor, Nova and possibly Brent (in some of the scripts he wasn't in the movie) then make their escape from the buried city before the bomb goes off, killing off the mutants and gorillas but not blowing up the planet. They decide to head back to Ape City to find Cornelius and Zira, only to find they've launched a Chimpanzee revolution and overthrown the militaristic government, wherein they proceed to release all the imprisoned humans. It then cuts to a timeskip where a Chimpanzee teacher is instructing a class of ape and human children, telling the story we just watched. In the final shot, it cuts to the remnants of the mutant city, where a mutated Gorilla emerges and shoots a flying dove, implying the danger isn't over. I kinda wish they'd stuck with the original ending, if for no other reason than it's not such a downer as the one they used. Maybe if we're lucky Boom Comics will adapt the original script like they did with Planet of the Apes: Visions.

If this what was originally going to happen I can honestly imagine people getting really upset with Taylor dying in the first scene. They probably still would have hated the movie as well to have a character that we got to know in the previous movie to only die would have left a bad taste. I know for a fact that people are still upset over Joel’s death last of us part 2.

@@bearerofbadnews1375 That was just his personal wish. Most of the scripts didn't actually kill him off, unless you count the timeskip epilogue as "killing him off". There was one script that killed him off at the end titled "Planet of the Men", but the ending of that script was terrible on so many levels Taylor's death is the least of it.

believe it or not, Roddy McDowall could not return for his role in this sequel, because he was in Scotland directing Tam Lin. Actor David Watson portrayed Cornelius in this film with McDowall only appearing briefly in clips from the first film used during Beneath’s pre-title sequence. plus an uncredited Paul Frees appeared in this movie at the end!

The movie (as well as myself) appeared in 1970, which was definitely not a time of optimism about the chances for the world's future. Between movies, it's true we had landed on the moon, but King and Kennedy were very recent casualties along with the hopes they inspired. Then, too, an ending to the war in Vietnam (already five years along) was nowhere near in sight (and few could imagine that the Cold War with the Communists could come to a peaceful end anyway), and the country itself was as sharply divided among itself as at any time since the Civil War (or, come to think of it, right now) - so rather a lot of the audience at each showing back then must have shrugged at the end and said something like, "Whatever." 🤨 😕

The mutants also said the Gorillas were too dense for their telepathy to have an effect. That was covered.

The first time I saw this and saw Brent emerge from the spaceship, I actually thought it was Taylor. I can see why James Franciscus was at least partly cast for the role, due to how much he resembled Heston, if you don't count the fact Heston was a much taller and bigger man.

Honestly, I prefer this sequel more than the ones that followed. If Taylor was the main character the entire time. If the effects weren't rushed, and they gave more time to develop the world/characters. The movie would be much better.

This is also my favorite of the sequels. I also read the novel adaptation in fifth grade and that was really good.

Beneath...is my favorite of all the sequels-always felt it was underated as a movie( had the orig Gold key comic of this movie but my parents threw a lot of things away including this-I have read that it is now the rarest and most collectable of the comic series)

I can see why this sequel is the weakest in the series. Hopefully Escape from the planet of the apes is better than this.

In some ways it is, but in others its just as depressing. The first half is comedic in nature, but the second half is more of an escape thriller, hence the title.

More of an improvement over this mess. However it does get tragic at the climax & helps lay the groundwork for the final two of the original series. Plus Ricardo Montalban shows up in the 3rd and 4th films; that’s bonus brownie points for having Khan 😄

This will always be the weakest of one doesn’t count Burton’s remake of the original film. Had the budget not been slashed, the effects somewhat better & a tighter story it could’ve been a good sequel. At least the last 3 are improvements over this one

I disagree. I always thought this one was good. It had amazingly depressing atmosphere of doom and it was quite scary. Such a sick movie. I don't get why would anyone be obsessed with special effects. First of all the worst of them were illusions so that is really a good explanation why they did not look real. I always liked the art work itself. Only the two first movies were good. The rest of them sucked. I've seen them all when I was kid and I could always remember only the first two. Actually this one is more memorable than the first one. The ending was ballsy. Everyone expected happy ending and they did this more realistic approach when the heroes had no chance against so many enemies.
