Disney's Strange World is out, and it may be the wokest movie they've ever made. From weak male characters and strong female protagonists, to a gay son and environmentalist message, the film is for more preachy than it is entertaining...

No offense to our host: I don't object to interracial marriage, otherwise, but now automatically turn off a film or series featuring interracial marriage or romance for no reason relevant to the plot (if it was, say, an update to Romeo and Juliet, for example). I know where it's going and just won't put myself through it, any more than I will a film or series that defaults to mocking or mistreating men solely to signal its wokeness and feminist cred.

@Cool PapaJMagik I'd tend to agree. I'm the product of an interracial marriage. It'd be nearly impossible to find another mixed person like me. But it's the OVERT need to portray an interracial relationship, regardless of story/plot. Heck I even worked for Disney, they are racist and no one can convince me otherwise

Oh, and one more thing: It _is_ possible to make an animated movie with an 'environmental' message and still make it good. Watch almost any one of Hayao Miyazaki's movies; movies such as "Ponyo," "Nausicaa," "Laputa" or "Tonari no Totoro." Each of these movies expressed a strong, clear theme of respecting the natural environment, but they did so with _subtlety_ and _nuance,_ without beating it over a viewer's head. (Hell, even Pixar's own "Wall-E" had an environment message without being heavy-handed about it.) So it _can_ be done. It just requires someone with actual talent & skill rather than an 'agenda.'
@tmntgirl4life
@tmntgirl4life Жыл бұрын
I think Hayao Miyazaki’s movies worked is probably due to the fact that he actually cared about the environment and actually not only put it in his films to encourage others but he did it himself. During the making of Spirited Away he assisted cleaning up a polluted river which was the inspiration for the river spirit scene. Also he never forces the idea that “humans bad, nature good.” In Princess Monoko we saw both sides of the conflict between the humans and nature both weren’t in the right or wrong. They both had good reasons and consequences for their actions.

They seem to think emphasizing a demographic trait (sexuality, gender, race, etc.) is the same as character development. Where have all the writers gone? I'd guess they know they can't write so they fall back on victimhood spam to bully moviegoers, i.e., if you don't go you are -phobic and/or racist and/or sexist, etc. Since I know they'll call me names no matter what I do, I'd rather be 'phobic' but still have the $20 the movie would have cost.

I find the stark contrast between Strange World and Encanto, two movies released around Thanksgiving Weekend fascinating because you can tell that the team behind Encanto put their heart and soul into telling a great story that people will come back to for years first and any woke agenda (I'm pretty sure there was none) came afterward. For Strange World, it's clear they were ticking boxes on the Woke/Diversity checklist and didn't care about anything else, and look how that turned out. Just another example of "Go Woke, Go Broke".

Agreed, this is why I believe that Encanto is the last good movie Disney released so far. When anything has a woke agenda, it automatically loses many points since I know it’s forced with often a terrible story.

I disagree that gay relationships and straight relationships can't be "interchangeable." What on earth is it that makes gay couples so different from straight couples (besides being able to have biological kids, of course)? Like, they're not "more sexual" than straight couples. They aren't inherently pornographic by just existing. Only someone who holds prejudice would think that. This movie was nothing to write home about, and the romance was forced for woke points, but it wasn't "child inappropriate" at all.

My wife and I took our 3 year old out to the theater on a whim to surprise her. She's only been to the movies a few times in her life and loves going. We went in not knowing anything and were gobsmacked at the amount of woke stuff in it. Like you said, actual quality took a total backseat to the agenda beatings. My wife and I felt held hostage at the theater honestly. We didn't want to leave since we brought our kid. She didn't really seem to be enjoying it either though tbh. It's too bad nowadays that we have to screen even animated movies that would have felt completely safe to see in the past. My wife grew up a disney girl that loved the princesses and so it's hard to get rid of disney plus but I've been gradually working on her to get rid of it. We already own the classics she loves and all the new stuff is mostly garbage anyway. Great video though, you hit the nail on the head. Strange World is basically an animated woke checklist, when stripped away of all that is bereft of any substance at all. It's literally the entire movie.

What is with some parents? Do you really think that A) Kids are not capable of understanding things only because they are young? You explain things to them concidering their age and there is not a thing you are unable to explain if you are a solid parent. B) You are a master of your kid and you can shelter it from everything until "it is the right time"? Sorry not sorry - kids have all different kinds of experiences - on the playground, in preschool, in school, in friends house. You should not be so afraid about having conversations with your children. They can see a gay couple on the street. Their school buddy could use a word "gay". Helicopter parents who treat their kids like they are stupid, unobservant and depentable are just so toxic... By sheltering yoir kids you make them weak, afraid, dependent on you (and YOU are not going to live forever to guide them all the time).

What pisses me off the most is the bait and switch. There's no mention of gayness or sexuality in the trailers. They just sort of blindside you and your kids with it midway through watching it. Yet they claim it's super important to represent people and that it's super important to the story. If it was so important, why didn't they mention it in the trailer? It's almost like they are too ashamed/embarrassed to put it in the trailer. This is how they handled the gay guy in Frozen too. He was just briefly in the background for 0.36 seconds for no reason other than to mark it off on their "woke points" checklist.

The fact that they used Pando as an allegory to Oil is cleverly woke. It’s also not surprising, the moment I heard you point out that the writers probably used the twist as a horrible allegory “getting rid of oil is a great idea!” it made me reek in disgust. At the end of the movie, it is a year after the events of most of the movie before Yeager tried to get past the mountains, we never get to hear the Avalonian population’s response to the destruction of Pando, they just willingly accept that Pando was a terrible source of energy for no reason.

Disney has always "explained things" to kids since the days we sat our kids in front to watch them. The reality is you now don't like what they are currently displaying for kids since they have started experimenting with expanding past the typical straight white familys, and you would much rather conform your kids to material centered around the life you desire them to live. Perhaps allowing said kids to form their own opinions based apon a wide range of material is the appropriate approach, rather then pushing them down a path predetermined for them.

Strange World is "the worst movie ever made"?? Honestly, with all the horse shit they've been rolling out recently (with a few bangers, credit were credit is do) that almost sounds like they should be proud of it. It's very difficult to do worse than CG lion king and Lightyear. I haven't seen this movie yet and don't plan too. Lightyear effed up have LGBT characters already. I'm a lesbian. I don't appreciate gay characters existing for the purpose of pandering. You could just tell the lesbian character in Lightyear wasn't actually written to be a lesbian; everything surrounding that just felt so forced. I was HIGHLY put off by that. You want random gays? Onward did it right. Legend of Korra did it right (too frequently though). Doctor Who did it right. The Last of Us did it right (with multiple lgbt characters - 2 gay men, 1 lesbian, and 1 bi woman). There's A LOT more too, including in Disney. *That all being said...why do so many people think they need to talk to children about sex and genitalia when a gay couple exists? Sex ed stuff is the ONLY real difference between homosexual couples and heterosexual couples. It's really not that complicated. Either exclude ALL romantic themes from kids films "to protect the children" or allow all forms of romantic themes (not sexual, romantic) to genuinely protect the children. Deal with being a gay child listening to what you say about homosexuality and children, and you'll understand what lgbt people are saying on this topic.*

The LGBT scenes in this movie are actually pretty well done. There are basically two, four if you want to count gendered pronouns. The first, Diazo and Ethan are flirting with each other for all of 10 seconds. Diazo steals Ethan's hat then Searcher, Ethan's father, comes in and makes everything awkward, as fathers do. We then proceed to not see Diazo again for an hour and 25 minutes. The next two 'lgbt' scenes are the father, mother, and grandfather each trying to provide Ethan with relationship advice in their battle to influence Ethan. If Diazo was replaced with a girl and you swapped gender pronouns, none of this dialogue would need to be changed. There was nothing 'gay' about it, it was just advice for a teenager going through his first crush. And finally, Diazo and Ethan share a sidehug right before the credits roll. It was rather refreshing to have an LGBT character where his being gay wasn't important to the story. It was just a piece of set dressing. Now.. All of this said, the movie isn't the greatest. It wasn't bad, but it was nothing to write home about either. Its an enjoyable enough 90 minutes. Its just not memorable.

I don't mind if a movie features LGBT+ or minorities, I just hate it when they're so self congratulatory, like if all the marketings only talk about how progressive and brave they are for including LGBT theme in the film, reminds me of the newest Doctor Who actor, instead of talking about his acting biography, they just keep saying "OMG THE DOCTOR WILL BE PLAYED BY A LGBT ACTOR" As an Asian myself, I still refuse to watch Shang Chi because it's just too cringe for me, I even felt second hand embarrassment for black people when I watched Luke Cage. Case and point, both Sailor Moon and Sgt. Frog features gay main character, but it's just part of the show/character, and not the focus, and thanks to that I grew up not thinking homosexual is weird because it felt so natural, all of these marketing and self congratulation actually made LGBT feels abnormal, and having them in a film is a huge deal because they're so unnatural

People generally don’t like them when they feel forced. Non-traditional relationships just happen to be a little more difficult in kids movies because implanting certain ideas into kids heads at an extremely young age is dangerous. Thanks for the review. So hold up, if the main character crushes on someone of their gender it should be a parental concern for young children even though main characters crush on people all the time? I don’t get it. Have extra conversations with kids. They gonna see Kelly with two dads at the PTA bake sale anyways. I don’t think families should hide themselves because parents in other families don’t want to have the extra conversation. I didn’t see so many things wrong with this film that seem to have a lot of people uncomfortable. And so what if the Indian character consumes a lot of soy? Soy is a big part of some people’s diet because of their culture. Plus, yeh there were some concerning things about him, but his masculinity or his taking responsibility wasn’t one of them. He flat out admitted piloting wasn’t his strong suit rather than letting his ego doom the team. I work with men. The least toxic ones are like that. You feel better working with them rather than it’s their way or the highway nine times out of ten.

This movie checked all the boxes... It had interracial families, a gay relationship, a handicapable dog and an environmentalist message. 10/10, most movie ever... I especially loved how merchandisable their mascot was. They didn't even need a story, that's how good it was! Plus the gayness kept a small enough blip that it could be easily removed for foreign markets, that's how forward-thinking Disney is! Totally brilliant use of the virtue signals people crave without so much meaningful substance to it that it actually affected the story to where it can't be quickly removed to get those bigot dollars... Brilliant!

If you’re not religious you might not get my point, but I would say, in truth, there is no real profit for them. But they do not know it yet. . I believe these ideologies are constantly being fostered by the devil enticing more and more people into degeneration - which is Ofcourse his aim (to oppose God and destroy his creation). And it is up to us to choose each day, which way we would go. Because why else would someone continue to do what does not profit them, if they are not overpowered by an even greater force that they have failed to resist (or have not learnt how to). . If we take out the supernatural influence, I believe another group has something to gain. To build a world order, you need complicit people to constantly push on a message that degenerates the society, until there is no hope. And then, someone provides a solution, which is obviously a bad solution but many are so down in the dumps that they cannot see. Still kind of a religious take cause it mirrors apocalyptic prophesies in revelations but oh well… . So yea. That’s my theory.

@@DiogenesDworkinson That's what I try to tell people. The controlling class at the top, who have access to hidden knowledge and real history, actively believe in God and the Devil. They reveal it all the time with their intentional hidden symbolism. Why would they, if it wasn't true? Then that same belief is mocked and persecuted for the peasants in today's society. Why is Christ the only religious figure that is allowed to be openly mocked in today's entertainment media? It is obvious that the controllers are working for Satan. They have been completely deluded by him into thinking they will live forever (transhumanist agenda), or that he is stronger than God and will defeat him in the end. They are fools who will only realize too late that the Devil hates them too, and was simply using them to claim as many souls as possible, theirs included.

I'm not sure, maybe just maybe, there's a legitimate market for such "coming out" stories, which might land well if handled differently and respectfully towards all of the characters. I'm a father of two, we're all straight, and we don't go through such a struggle, but a cousin of mine, and a very good friend of mine as well, both went through a rough phase because of them being (independently from each other) homosexual. I remember my cousin being thrown out by his parents, and he stayed with us, for a time, half a year or so. My mother managed for his family to allow him back, but it was never the same, as they never really accepted him as he was, and his two brothers were rather indifferent to him afterwards, despite of him being in any other way actually a good brother and son. I have mixed feelings about e whole thing, it was quite sad. He moved away, went to Canada actually, and (as far as I know, I'm not all that in touch with any of them due to other reasons) lives with his partner. They kind of tolerate them both, as long as they're mainly away, but it's simply not the same. And the other guy, my good friend, well, he gathered all his strength and came out to me, afraid that I would reject him or rather his friendship afterwards. That was roughly 30 years ago, and I knew him since at least 10 years before. I always knew that he was gay, and I told him as much, and he was a bit surprised. He's the kind of guy whom you wouldn't notice, he hates the lgtbq+ community and their messaging or agenda very much. He despises all of their agenda, and thinks that's its unnecessary and over the top. He's had his partners, he's been in long-term relationships, but it's never quite worked out, but it suffices to say that as he came out to me, I told him that I always knew he was gay, and my love for him as a friend, as a brother even, wouldn't be affected by it, we hugged, and we're still friends to this day. It was very important for him that I knew and that I accepted him, which I had already done and always did way before he took that one very important step for himself. He never knew that at that time, but I had already engaged in some discussions or even a couple of fights in school against bullies aiming their hatred towards him, so I was already defending him long before he came out, and it's one of the best friendships anyone can ever wish for. So, I'm now here thinking, what if they decided to tell such a story, a story of acceptance, friendship, brotherly love, loyalty, and resilience, despite of being different, without making all men bad, all women virtuous, all lgtbq+'s amazing, but instead looking at it through the lens of acceptance, and foremost respect towards everyone! I know who I am, I don't need confirmation from anyone, and I love my family and my kids, and although I'm glad/relieved that they come both after their mum and me, regarding that particular aspect of our lives, I can imagine that some people would indeed need some kind of reassurance or confirmation, of who they are or are allowed to be, (specially in their young years), who would love them, and who are they allowed to love, just as my friend and my cousin. Two very similar stories, with two different outcomes, precisely of the way it was handled and people around behaved towards them. They have a bit more to struggle with, than normal people, as we all are trying to determine who we are, what our place on this earth is, so... I put myself into the position of "what if it were one my kids?", which might not be the case, but just what if... and always think about these two people! I ask myself if instead of pushing such agenda, rather a story like that, should it be necessary, would be well received... By the way, among tens of thousands I've come to know over the years, only very few are like the 2 I just mentioned, and still we get the forced inclusion in every single movie and series, just to make sure we have certain representation, certain quote... Just to point pout the over representation in modern media and pop culture, so maybe we should start concentrating more in quality rather than quantity, which is what Disney and Co. are desperate to do!

There is a market...but its small, and the overall issue is trying to push LGBT themes in the wrong genres. When it comes to Superhero's, action movies and the like....the audience doesn't really care about the romance aspect, where as when LBGT themes are introduced...the writers always have to justify their sexuality now or its irrelevant creating a paradox, and then theres the gay communities and how they see representation in film. They obviously want deeper focus, but its a movie about flying robots or whatever, the main character just happens to be gay, but then if you just mention it. you're..."queer baiting" and it just creates a cycle of constant complaining and losing sight of the overall focus when it comes to movies.....ENTERTAINMENT!!!

I think you nailed it when you said the script supervisor must have been a diversity hire. Unfortunately, placing any priority in hiring above the suitability and skill of the applicant leads to a reduction in the quality of work. In todays emotionally volatile world letting it be known that diversity led hiring is happening does mean that more of your applicants will consider themselves "diverse" and among those with that attitude that might apply knowing they have that advantage there is a high correlation with being radicalised and thus many of these employees find it totally acceptable to push these agendas when most others would place the integrity of the product above politics. As others point out it is possible to produce a film where diversity is normalised but not when the film is being made by people hired for the colour of their skin, religion, sexuality and gender identification and not for their skill at the job role they are filling.
