Great video! One tip: The portion you pointed out and referred to as the patellar tendon is actually called the patellar ligament. Ligaments connect bones and tendons connect muscles to bones. So the patellar tendon is the portion proximal to the patella that connects it to the quads and the patellar ligament connects the patella to the tibial tuberosity.

@@dzzlucas She is doing great!! The first surgery at our regular vet did not hold(Aug/23) They tried to tighten ligaments around the knee cap to keep it in place. One month later it came loose and we had to go to the specialist. There he deepened the groove where the knee cap sits. Also her attachment point for a ligament on her lower leg had to be shifted to make everything straight. She has pins in that spot which will stay there unless they try to work themselves out one day. She is back to her nutty self and you would never know she had it done! Inside the house I had to have her on a leash or in the crate for 2 months. 3 months she started doing stairs. Lily is a 5yr old French Bulldog. My heart goes out to you and your Pup, my thoughts are with you! ❤

Hello. My dog went through this surgery, but his knee cap/patella keeps luxating. It's been 2 months since the surgery. When he walk slow, it's pretty evident how the patella keeps going out of place and snapping back to place almost in every flexion of the knee, when he jogs, it looks a bit more stable. Apart from that he has hyperlexia, just in case it needs to be considered. Is it possible that after a successful surgery, the problem persists? Or if the patella keeps luxating, it means that the surgery didn't go very well? I know it's a hard question over KZfaq, I just want some guidance, I'm getting desperate for the sake of my dog. Thank you.

This is a fantastic video. I have a friend w a 10 yr old corgi Australian Shephard mix and his front legs bend sideways. He's obviously in a ton of pain. (ex massage therapist here). He's constantly licking his legs. He limps sometimes but it's all his legs so he can't favor one and they're short little legs. I fear it's too late already and he's too old for a bunch of surgeries nor can the expense be justified. (prob wouldn't work anyways at this point) I don't know. Maybe you have some insight I don't. He doesn't like doctors but I told him he's gonna have to take him to the doctor to get him put down so either way it's the doctor or a bullet to the brain but u don't own a gun so... What happens if u just let this play out? The dog stops walking and just poops all over themselves? I take him to the ocean and let him stand in the surf. He seems to love the cold water. I tried to tell his owner that throwing a stick for him is the worst because he's running, changing direction and stopping suddenly. He just wants to believe the best all the time. I'm a realist. One thing he says all the time is that he was just born that way. That his legs have always bend that far sideways. In the back of my mind I'm thinking that it doesn't matter. It's an unstable joint. Then I watched some videos of an orthopedic vet explain that they can tell really early in life if the animal has this condition. Like the groove holding the ligament isn't deep enough or the bend of the leg is wrong.

My 2-year-old mini poodle has been diagnosed with grade 4 patellar luxation. The vet said there is no guarantee that the problem can be fixed after surgery and that the patella might dislocate again given her severe condition. I'm so shocked to hear this. She looks absolutely normal, with only 15% of the time limping. She keeps chasing birds and squirrels every day! Should I still proceed with the surgery for my girl?

@ofresh56
@ofresh56 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comment. Patellar luxation is graded from I to IV. Grade I is most mild and grade IV is most severe. The model in the video is a grade III.

Is patellar luxation defined as genetic, traumatic or combined issue for dogs? Secondary how much is this injury more related to dog breeds and their genetic? Thirdly as you mentioned bone misalignment as a reason for the patella luxation, what might be the degrading reason of that, is it nutrition, movement, unnatural diet etc? I could go further, maybe there is a question material for another video, for explaining the nature of this issue.
@ofresh56
@ofresh56 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. In most cases this is a problem of genetics that determine bone size and shape.

My puppy was diagnosed exactly like yours by two vet, performing same manipulations. Both said to monitor and if it starts bothering the dog, she may need a surgery if it gets too difficult for her to walk. She started showing more signs between 8 -16 months, but then it's started getting less frequent. She is almost 4 years old now and has an episode once in a blue moon. 🤞I wish you best, keep monitoring and, even if recommended for a surgery, get a second opinion:-)

Are there any ligaments holding the patella in place laterally?
@ofresh56

Not ligaments per se. There are soft tissues on each side that stabilize the patella: parapatellar fibrocartilage, joint capsule and fascia.
