Deductibles and out of pocket maximums are a fraud. You still have to pay those bills. Which are crazy. Don't pay them.

And this is the reason why I don't go to the hospital often. I have health insurance, but I am still left with a bill to pay.

I had a coworker a few years back who told me she does not pay medical bills. I didn’t completely understand that logic until I had a couple major surgeries last year. I contacted everyone a couple months before the surgery to get an amount to pay because I didn’t want be surprised with a bill I had to make payments on. I was told $700… I saved $1200. The day of my first surgery, I owed $1250 for the doc’s practice. When I checked into the hospital, I was given another $2000 and $350….. then a month later I get a random email telling me I owe additional $340 for the anesthesia. Oh.. the lab work bills come later too. I just closed my laptop.

I understand that logic of your coworker. When I was 18 I racked up a $15k medical bill. Gave them my insurance number info. Nothing happened. Collections and added to my credit score, but it fell off completely in 7 years on its own.

Don't even get me started with this right here. I went to the ER last year with insurance and they sent me a bill for $1000 for the ER physicians. The insurance company said they paid it. I told the ER physician group to contact insurance. Don't bother me. Story #2 (and there are many but I won't go there, I could write a book). Today I went to the dentist with insurance. They said I need a deep cleaning to prevent gum disease. No cavities, no root canals, nothing crazy. They said my copay would be $900!!! These people have lost their minds. Oh, and by the way, they are coming for the animals too. Took my cat to the emergency vet last year and walked out with an $1100 bill. SMH

I stay under the poverty line to keep my benefits, it’s disgusting. I have to get a lot of treatments and made too much last year and lost my insurance and to pay for own I couldn’t get some treatments, and had a waiting period before I could start making appointments.

Sorry, I moved to Germany over 20 years ago. Just had a major prostate surgery, stayed 8 days in hospital. My bill? 80 bucks out of pocket . For everything. For profit health care has to go. Period.

People need to look at the fine print on the bottom of medical bills because if you can't afford it you can send them a letter with proof and the hospital will cover it. My husband went through this two years ago and his thousands of dollars were covered by the hospital because he was unemployed etc and proved it by sending them all of the information and a nice letter.

I got to Mexico for medications I need or might need. I avoid the doctor at all costs. I literally become my own pharmacist because I have no health insurance. I’m going in a a few months to get refills. It literally is going to cost me less than $500 for an entire six months to a year supply of medication I need I might be going down there to research a mammogram for my sister in Mexico because they want 2000 Dollars for a mammogram

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and the financial aspect of it has been debilitating. We luckily get assistance for SOME of her treatments but if we make above a certain threshold they’ll take away that benefit. Our debt is from medical bills and each of us has insurance. It’s disgusting too because the people in the insurance companies and the medical billers are not knowledgeable at all, constantly make mistakes, and are rude to us all the time because we can’t pay for everything. The system is really broken. My mom always says that what matters most is health because if you’re healthy you won’t be in debt and taken advantage of like how our healthcare system treats us

I can concur. As someone what used to get strep throat yearly as a kid, but went years not getting it as an adult, I got it years ago. I knew what it was but couldn't just go to a pharmacy because it requires a prescription. I didn't have health insurance at the time (aged out) and went to the hospital. I told them I had strep throat > saw a doctor that confirmed I had strep throat > got charged $300 for a 15 minute consult > only to be allergic to the knock off prescription they gave me, even though I told them that it was proven that I was not allergic to the real thing. Thankfully, the little bit of the prescription I took before I started breaking out was enough to kill the strep throat. Note: an excellent way to kill it before it fully develops is a tablespoon of hot sauce (brand doesn't matter) however often you need it. Anytime I feel like I'm getting a sore throat this is my go to. Sometimes I have to do it for a day or two, but it works!

The lady that said paying self pay is cheaper is true. I have worked in the medical field for 7 year's. I tell patients its cheaper just to pay out of pocket most of the time.

You dont have to pay the no insurrance fee on your taxes. I cant remember what its called but you can apply for a low income exemption that literally has no specific cap on income.
