Story time. I was recently on a flight where there was a medical emergency at 30,000 feet in the air, and this is that story.
Big thanks for all the supportive messages when I posted the short version of this recently on TikTok.

Very interesting video Kiran! You must have had a lot of self-control to keep yourself and the patient calm under the pressure. Amazing example to set. I'm really interested to know what the insurance aspect of a situation like this looks like and what would happen if something went wrong or if you had made a mistake. A lot of doctors I've spoken to said they're very unlikely to make themselves known in a situation like this because of the possible implications. Great video as always!

Thanks Nasir! Interestingly I looked this up recently, there’s some legislation called the ‘Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015’ that protects you and makes it very unlikely that you’ll get sued for being a Good Samaritan. I can still easily see how it would put people off trying to help though - not long until FY1 now, good luck with it my dude!

You saved British Airways from about tens of thousands of pounds worth of fuel and other expenses and voila got nothing in return! Very well done Team Speedbird (callsign for British Airways)

According to other videos on this topic, under American Law, if a doctor accepts a gift from the airline, the doctor's status as a "Good Samaritan" may be jeopardized. Is it the same or similar under British Law?

Mate fantastic work! It's a good job you were there, props to the jam scones too. I think BA should give you some air miles or a free upgrade on your next flight.

Although I’m sure you weren’t expecting anything when you offered to help, I think it was quite rude of the airline not to contact you after the flight! And if I were the patient, I would definitely try to contact you to say ‘thank you’! I have also experienced something like this myself. There were times in life when what I did wasn’t fully acknowledged or appreciated. Now I begin to realise that being able to help someone is a blessing in itself and the reward could come in the form of knowing that someone’s life has been made better because of something that I did. And I think the incident that day gave you an opportunity to apply your medical knowledge to deal with an in-flight emergency, which is not what you would encounter very often. So I guess it’s one of the experiences in life to feel grateful for! : ) This is another GREAT video - I’m looking forward to the next one! : )

Well done Dr Morjaria...so great you were there to handle such a situation.Yes you would think they would contact you and maybe even offer you a free flight for doing that..imagine the costs if they had to land the plane not to mention the inconvenience to all the passengers !! I know its all in a days work for you but still, the airlines is taking the #iss abit methinks. Still it must be really nice knowing you have the skills and knowledge to handle that situation and and I bet you felt proud of yourself :) and enjoyed your holidays even more ..lol Made me laugh when they said what type of doctor !! lol...

@@Kiran.Morjaria great...seems there are often quite a few doctors on board flights from the comments :) now its got me asking all sorts of questions like what if it was a heart attack or something more serious like a stroke ? I suppose they have a resus machine on board ...but still. So they literally just rely on the first aiders they have onboard or rely on there being a doctor in the house..I'm also wondering why that woman did not bring her own scones with her ...lol !!! sorry I'll shut up now.....Great story though!

Its quite crap that they didn't offer you anything complimentary/or at a minimum a thank you letter ! You essentially saved them hundreds of thousands of pounds by treating the patient and not letting the flight divert and land in an emergency. A GP I know had over 50,000 free air miles for a similar scenario ! That would be a bit much, but would it kill them for a free flight !

fab video I watched a video when some had fallen off motorbike going to airport and boarded the plane with a collapsed lung pneumothorax . there was doctor on board who used a coat hanger and brandy to treat her. oh the doctor was Professor of Orthopaedic and Accident Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences of the University of Nottingham. just what you need when dealing with an accident !!

30 years ago they'd hand you the med kit, show you a binder with their 25M insurance policy and indemnification statement. Patch you to the ground medical consultant (like talking to a first year medical student, useless.) Comp'd the entire first class round trip ticket. Times have changed apparently.

sick story. no wonder the surgeons left lol. If lets say you were the only doctor on the plane, would your management have changed? in this case, you could technically keep yourself legally in the clear cause the other doctor knew what you weree doing and acting in the best interest, so you were covered in a way. If there were no other medics, would you have diverted the flight instead? or if she developed an allergic reaction?
