Well since we're on the topic of bad skin. I had pretty bad skin from the time I was 14 until I was in my twenties. I tried everything, from face washes to spending 1000's on dermatologists (plural) visits and their prescription drugs and nothing seemed to eliminate it. Benzyl peroxide reduced it slightly, but in no way solved the issue. Eventually I just accepted it and hoped one day it would go away. Later, I really got into exercise and overall health (I was tired of being underweight and wanted to get bigger). Long story short, I adjusted my diet and when I eliminated wheat from my diet for a 2 week period, as an experiment to see if I felt better, I didn't really notice a huge difference. However, when I ate it again after 2 weeks I noticed my stomach got extremely upset, I felt ghastly for the next few hours and my skin flared up the next day after only consuming a small amount. I thought to myself, if its making me feel this way, maybe I shouldn't be eating it. So I stopped again, after 3 weeks I noticed my skin had significantly improved, and combined with the benzyl peroxide I had almost completely clear skin. Presently, I'm 25 and I wouldn't say my skin is flawless (I have some damage from all the years of acne) but I rarely have breakouts now, and when I do they're extremely small as opposed to larger cystic versions. TLDR: Try adjusting your diets if you have acne, wheat was my culprit.

i totally get the part about not over scrubbing. I have a problem with blackheads and i always tried to exfoliate them away using all the scrubs out there. last month i started to work WITH my skin and not against it. I started using the oil cleansing method to replace the dirty oxidized oil in my pores with clean oil and it worked. i still have enlarged pores but at least the blackheads are gone.

The thing with soaps You gotta use something gentle and nourishing on your face because if you use something antibacterial it'll not only kill the bad, but also the good bacteria. Your skin naturally (specially if you're young) regenerates on its own and kills bad bacteria on its own, so it's best for you to leave it to do ot naturally instead of messing up your skin environment Also, antibacterial soaps dry out your skin, and that ain't good. Antibacterials should be reserved for your body

I'm sorry Jenny but I've had Eczema since the day I was born, and open broken skin like eczema and Chlorine do not go together. I have never been able to swim in a chlorine pool. I've only been able to swim in mineral water pools and the ocean. And even swimming in the ocean takes its roll but not like swimming in chlorine, it literally burns. Maybe that's just me but I doubt it, I have an uncle through marriage and not of my actual bloodline who has the same issue. He lives in California and actually had a special pool built that uses only mineral water because chlorine pools irritate his skin. So I'm not to sure about that chlorine and eczema one.

This may not be true for everyone. Maybe you can ask your dermatologist about this specifically. But I know many of my friends with eczema whom swimming/chlorine water has really helped them.

Jenny Le after twenty some odd years I've kind of just chalked up to life lol, so much goes into eczema, like you said allergies has something to do with it to. My derm put me on Zyrtec to help manage my eczema and I can't have a lot dairy because it causes inflammation and makes my eczema flair up. I also can't have a lot of citrus, or tomatoes. The hardest thing for me was learning how to manage my eczema holistically. I was prescribed betamethasone dipropionate cream augmented at 0.05% and my derm told me it was the strongest that they had and it was so strong that it ate the pigmentation in my skin. And my eczema is on my face so for a long time my skin on my face was two different colors. So I've been learning how to manage my eczema through diet and just regular skin care. It's definitely gotten much better over the years now that I've learned more of the triggers. I also feel like I have to drink a ton of water, I don't know if it's eczema related or not but I get dehydrated very easily.

Oh gosh, I am so sorry to hear this. Most of time, physicians would recommend getting an allergy test to see foods and environmental exposures that you allergic to. But I'm sure you already tired this since you've been dealing with eczema for so long.

Jenny Le yes I've done it, I'm allergic to latex, bananas, oranges, we suspect bees but I've never been stung but my brother was and that was no bueno. I'm also allergic to a lot of different flowers and strong fragrances like those vapor oil things make my allergies go berserk. Oh and you said on another post that cleaning with oils like coconut oil is a good idea, I totally agree, I've used jojoba, Argan, coconut and the caudalie divine oil to clean my face and all of it works wonders especially when I lived in NJ and winters were brutal.

Hey Jenny! Should I not be using Biore charcoal products to clear my acne? I have mild-moderate acne and nothing seems to help get rid of it. What cleansers did the dermatologist recommend? Thank you so much for doing these videos! Love them!
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
Gunja Mehta Usually the dermatologist would prescribe an antibiotic cream to get the acne under control and also a topical Tretinoin cream to prevent future outbreaks. Unfortunately, none of these things are over the counter, but your primary care physician can prescribe these medications as well (it might be cheaper to see a primary care physician than a dermatologist).
@GR-Dermatologyandwellness
@GR-Dermatologyandwellness 7 жыл бұрын
Gunja Mehta you might also want to look into moderate exercise sweat a little :) make sure you are getting in all of your omega fatty acids and have a balanced diet... our skin is a reflection of our internal environment .... perhaps the charcoal is drying on your skin which leads to unbalanced ph on your skin and more oil production, if you are looking for an antibacterial try manukah honey. Use it as a face was and mask. Hope this helps

I do get flare ups of pimples sometimes, but my main issue is rosacea. My dermatologist prescribed me soolantra but the cream has no generic and costs $75 a bottle. It doesn't really do much for my face honestly. I've used differin cream at night since I was a teenager but it dries out my skin. I use cetaphil, which was also recommended to me by a derm and I moisturize with an aveeno moisturizer. I just can't seem to avoid the red flushing and blemishes.. everything I read online basically says you have to stop living your life and being a person to make it go away. 😭 that can't be true. Anyway, there's all this talk about preventing and treating acne, but did you learn anything about rosacea?

hi new watcher! thank you for uploading your videos and experience with us! did you guys learn about keratosis pilaris in your dermatology rotations? i think i have that on my legs and arms (but only on my legs and arms). my dermatologist didnt really tell me about that term, she always just said i had really dry skin & that i needed to moisturize... but i was prescribed the ammonium lactate lotion and i couldn't stand the oily formula or the smell of it so i stopped using that. I googled hyperkeratotic after you mentioned it here and i think i have that on the heels on my feet >< ugh, especially during the winter time. Personally I felt like in the drug store helped, even the AmLactin lotion - maybe because it felt like the ammonium lactate lotion to me, but found Cetaphil & coconut oil based body lotion would work 80% of the time, depending on the humidity of the air lol. sometimes my skin would flake on my body, like mini flakes. i moisturize every night, and exfoliate when necessary but it still happens... are there any real medical reasons for that? (i know you're not a dermatologist, but just wondering if you learned any of this in rotations, if not it's okay) thank you!

Hi Jenny, thanks for the great skin care tips! This makes so much sense to me as when I was younger I barely washed/exfoliated my skin and never had any problems with my skin at all. Now (I'm 23) I have been exfoliating nearly every day and I have these little bumps on my skin that don't seem to go away. If they are keloids from over-exfoliating, do you know what would get rid of them? If I stop exfoliating will they go away eventually? Thanks!
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
Abby Wiersma if it's small little bumps then it's most likely mila due to over exfoliation. Keloids are more due to bad scaring. The dermatologist would prescribe Tretinoin to turn over the skin and slowly get rid of the bumps. This is not a dermatologist recommendation but you can try getting a facial where they do extractions to get rid of all the little bumps and then stop exfoliating.

You can try a little test spot on your leg first and wait 24 hours to see if your skin reacts to the sunblock.

RetinA, to my understanding, is a vitamin A topical which speeds up your cell production. It's good for acne prone skin because it regenerates so fast that it pushes out the impurities. But I wouldn't consider it gentle. Lol i can only use it 3 times a week tops and never back to back. I think I have the 0.05% ? Maybe... it may be even lower than that, but I've tried them all. Does dove have a facial soap? Or did the dermatologist suggest using the same dove soap for the body? Liquid or bar soap? What about for someone with an "internal" problem? It's been suggested that my acne comes from within, no matter how clean my skin is. Should I be using an antibacterial? I've tried benzoyl peroxide paired with my retina, one morning one night, suggested by my primary care physician & it only helped a little but I still get my major monthly breakouts.
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
Karina Raquel You are right. It is not very gentle but easier on the skin than other medications. If you are breaking out every month, it might be hormonal. A diuretic called spironolactone works well for that type of acne. Maybe that can be something you ask your doctor about.

Jenny Le thank you! I will definitely look into that. My brother had an rx of minocycline and then acutane to clear his, so I've been meaning to ask about that as well. My doctor just wanted me to try topicals first.
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
Accutane is one of the strongest acne medications only good for cystic acne. Plus it has many side effects. My brother was also on accutane. According to guidelines, its always good to start slow and work your way up to see what works for your skin.

Thank you for sharing what you have learned, however, you need to stop saying "don't hate me". You're putting yourself on YT, obviously there will be people who will be mean, but there are also many people whom will appreciate your knowledge. So please stop saying that, no one will hate you for giving us advice. If people "hate" you for sharing what you've learned, so be it. They're ignorant.

Hi Jenny, I was wondering if you knew more about going into Dermatology Residency from DO school. I've read that it is even more competitive to get into Derm from DO than from MD and would love to know any information you have and if getting a derm rotation was difficult?
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
berkbear It was not difficult to get a Derm rotation. But that would not be DO vs MD problem - that would be more of a school program type problem. If your school is not in contract with a dermatologist, it will be harder for you to get a rotation. As for residency - there is a merger so DOs and MDs will be applying to the same residencies.

what about ppl with lots of acme scarring or hyperpigmentation where sacylic acid is supposedly a necessity? what do u/he recommend?
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
+fazyt86 some people, especially those with tan skin or if Asian decent are more prone to hyperpigmentation. I don't think there is good evidence that salicylic acid actually lightens these areas or fade scares. Best advice is to stay out of the sun and use sunblock

Residencies mainly look at your board scores from medical school. But I might be wrong. You would have to ask a Dermatologist or a dermatology resident to know for sure.

Great video, but i have a quick question! What is the advice for hyperpigmentation? I've been annoyed with it from acne, even if i leave them be.
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
I think this depends. I know during my plastic surgery rotation, they would prescribe a cream for hyperpigmentation, but that was after surgery or due to postinflammatory hyperpigmentation - I'll get back to you on the exact name. I don't have my notes on me. Usually these things go away with time (mine take months).

ameryrose143 Usually hyperpigmentation takes time to fade. Depends on what type of scarring. If they're keloids then they would inject it with steroids. I believe there is also laser therapy available but I'm not entirely sure.

@drjennale

LadyShady05 Depends on what type of acne - cystic versus non cystic. There is no over the counter medication for this. I think you would need more of antibiotic cream and Tretinoin cream for moderate to minor acne - talk to your primary care doctor about these.

What do you think causes the dandruff on the face ?
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
Angie Bonilla The medical term for it is seborrheic dermatitis and it is caused by a variety of things like genetics, normal yeast of the skin, stress, or living in cold/hot claimants. We know that it's not due to poor hygiene or allergies. And the good thing is that it is not harmful.

If you have mila (spelling?) what are you supposed to do? I have a lot on my forehead and had no idea what it even was! Any advice?
@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
Chrissia Victors If you see a dermatologist they would probably prescribe you Tretinoin cream - it causes the skin to turn over and get rid of the acne over time and prevent you from forming new acne. Not a dermatologist recommendation but you can go get a facial to get the mila extracted. It should clear your skin then you can try not exfoliating as much.

Is that a fitbit watch? i have one and it looks the same that is why i ask :)))) does it really help? and thank you so much for these advices. i had an acne problem because i went to a beauty treatment and it removed my superficial layer of skin that even the foundation would slip on my cheeks and i had an infection with s. epidermidis. i had a treatment and it cleared up with antibiotics and a formula made at the pharmacy given by my dermatologist but i have tons of little white bumps under the skin and i can not remove them . they drive me nuts. i went to the dermatologist again and it prescribed me a cream with tretionoin and clinamicidin but i do not see any improvement only flaky skin. I do not know what to do.

@drjennale
@drjennale 7 жыл бұрын
Good question! I'm not actually sure. I know some people say that you may be producing more oil because your skin is dry and your body is trying to compensate. So in that sense, moisturizing may help reduce oil production - but I don't know if there is any evidence to this statement.
