Hey Shaun, I lost my dad in my first week of medical school. I’m at the end of my 3rd year now and it feels like a distant yet recent memory at the same time. I didn’t take time off and coped by studying, in hindsight I think I should have and I’m glad you were able to take that time. I’m sorry this happened and I hope you have a great support system. Hang in there and congrats on your last year.

So sorry about your loss man. Sometimes it is so easy to be caught up in school and feel like you have to be "on" at all times but you're right, medical school isn't everything. As med students, while we do recognize the sacrifice that comes with med school, you're never truly prepared for the unexpected. I've seen classmates be diagnosed with cancer, lose siblings, lose parents, and even some go through divorce. I'd only wish that some schools recognize this and give us appropriate time to adjust to these changes we come across. That said, I'm happy that you're now starting your final year and I'm sure you've made your dad proud. Best of luck this coming application cycle and I look forward to the eventual graduation vlog!

Shaun, I am so sorry to hear about your father. I can't imagine going through something as serious as a loss during the rigors of school. However, I am so relieved that you had the courage and the heart to share this with us. It is SO difficult, to not get lost in the grind of pursuing this career. Some days I feel like I am letting life pass me by, and I know a lot of us feel that way some times too. But for you to take the time to share an important message with us is beyond appreciated. As always, take time for yourself and your family. We love and support you to infinity brotha!!!

I love how honest and open you are with us Shaun, I am so sorry for your loss. Med school is hard and it's important to take a step back just like you did to realise it's not everything. I had the same reakthru when my grandpa died, the day it happened I had to get home and study for an exam i had the day after. When that exam was done I took two weeks off and life started feeling different. It is hard to be productive all the time and excell on all sides of life all thru med school but you're getting back to it slowly and I'm happy for you. Hope you"ll be able to find some balance this year, sending you a lot of love!

I’m currently studying for my OT boards and OT school has been a majority of my life these last 3 years. But something we all need to remember is that occupational balance and self care is just as important as school

Just watched the video Shaun. I lost my dad at age 14 so I can partly resonate with your pain. Grief is really something that never goes away, we just learn to make it apart of us. I’m glad you took the personal time for yourself. Medical school really takes everything out of you but it’s great to see you’re doing better and prioritizing the gym and what not. Cant wait to see the next vlog

Thank you for being vulnerable with us Shaun, I am sorry for your loss. As someone who has followed your journey from almost day 1, I can say that you have been doing great balancing everything that comes with the grind. I am starting medical school in July and you have been a huge inspiration for me throughout the last 4 years of undergrad to keep pushing through by providing a real look at what med school is like, good and bad. Thank you for talking about this. In August 2022 my favorite person in the world, my grandmother, passed away. I had just started my second year of med school. I took some time to see her before she passed, but it was still very sudden and unexpected. It's very true that medical school isn't everything, and you really have to remind yourself of that, because the ones who don't are the ones who become incredibly jaded and lose their empathy along the way. There is so much more to life. I've also gained weight, developed chronic back/neck pain, and depression, and not until I started putting my health before school did I truly see an improvement in my life and my grades. Our worth is not equivalent to our grades, which residency we pursue, what our step scores are, or anything else superficial. Thanks for sharing :)

I appreciate your transparency and how much work you put in to continue a youtube channel and also become a doctor. I can't imagine the mental toll that had especially during very stressful times of medical school. I'm only just taking my MCAT and It is stressful and makes me think a lot about the future. Oh my goodness Shaun, I didn't know that your dad passed away. I am incredibly sorry. You are very right: life happens outside of medical school (or medical school applications, in my case) and it is important to remember that. I have had a lot of challenges in my journey to medical school and have been having similar thoughts to yours in recent weeks, so this video was very poignant. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, I'm sure they'll inspire many others like they inspired me. Again, I'm really sorry for your loss. I will say a prayer for your dad, may he rest in perfect peace. Take care.

Your are an inspiration and example of what a caring compassionate physician should be. I am entering my 34th year of practice in primary care and in a few years will be retiring. Hey Shaun, Man I was in complete shock when you mentioned your dad had passed away. I am very sorry for your loss, and I can't imagine how hard this has been on you and your family. My deepest condolences. I know he's watching over you and is incredibly proud of the person you have become. This has been my favorite video, the raw emotional connection, vulnerability, and reminding us that your are human too. Often times, medical students on KZfaq show how superhuman they are, and hide their lows in fear of being looked differently. No one really talks about the reality of medicine, and this was incredibly honest and genuine. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing this was definitely needed. Med school would be way easier if life didn’t happen but as you said we have to prioritize other aspects of our life as well. And think about it, if we ignore these things now and go on with the grind in med school, when will it be important? Cause it’s gets harder/less time than now.

I think this is where falling behind in life/relationships start. We prioritize this lifestyle as early as pre-med/medical school and it is just a slippery slope as we continue our careers in medicine

Hello Shaun, It's so nice to see you again, although I'm so sorry for your loss of your Father. Yes it's difficult losing a parent, just as I also recently lost my own Mother very recently in January 30th of this year. So I know that you must feel terrible losing your Dad. Anyway, I'm so happy for you that you are doing great, and doing well in your education to become one of the Best Doctor's in this Country. My current greatest fear, after not making it to medical school is one of my close family member dying while I'm in medical school since they wouldn't have been able to see me achieve what I've always dreamt off. Spending quality time with family is essential for me in order to avoid any regret if that were ever to happen. Thank you for sending this message to those of us who don't think about stuff like this. I don't always watch you, but I also would like to share my condolences over your father passing away. And you are not in an undecent shape as you think yourself to be. So, work on yourself, but don't stress about it since you already look great :)

I'm still in a dark place. I'm glad u knew enough to take a rotation off and regroup , take care of family and you. I was so proud of u ❤❤ your rant was needed u needed to say it all get it out. I have a question. I know i’m in high school and all, and I shouldn’t be worrying about this yet. As somebody that wants to go into the medical field though, how do you sustain yourself financially in medical school? This is something that has been on the back of my mind the more I think about it. Will I be able to work a job while in medical school?

I would say my favorites were some of my family medicine/internal medicine rotations. My least favorite was probably some of my surgical ones 😂 and yes we are planning to make more funny story videos!
