In this video we compare college/university to medical school, going over:
1) Material 00:35
2) Grading 01:58
3) Schedule and Time 02:48
4) Class Exams and Tests 04:12
5) Standardized Tests (MCAT and Step) 05:13
6) Cost and Financing School 05:44
Medical school and university share many similarities but also many differences. Some of the differences may surprise you, such as the fact that medical school material may not be as difficult as your college courses!
In terms of material, you must complete some prerequisite courses prior to applying to med school. However, other classes are highly dependent on your major. In medical school, everyone studies the same material. The pace is much faster than in college. That's why you often hear that learning in medical school is like drinking water from a fire hydrant.
Being a competitive med school applicant requires straight A's and a top MCAT score. Because of this, college pre-med culture is often cut throat and stressful. Medical students are stressed out as well, but pass/fail grading helps reduce the pressure to outperform your peers.
You will have less free time in medical school. You don't get to choose your class schedule.
Exams do not follow the standard quarters and semesters with evenly spaced midterms and finals. The good news is that medical school has fewer concurrent classes and therefore fewer exams. The bad news is that each of these exams covers much more information. Also, you're unlikely to have multiple large exams on the same day or even same week in medical school.
The MCAT is a challenging standardized test, but it pales in comparison to the beasts that are USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2CK.
In terms of costs, medical school is more expensive than university. I'll go over how to fund medical school and college, referring to scholarships, grants, and loans, in a future video!
You can see a great summary table comparing medical school and college on the blog post here: medschoolinside...

In honestly terrified to go to med school. I struggle so much with pre med yet truly love the concept of psychiatry. I am a natrual at anatomy and biology. How hard would it be for me? (I am aware it's rather broad the question)
@wholeNwon

@@malinamorales6527 As the speaker said, the material isn't difficult per se. There is a lot to learn. If the med. school accepts you, they are certain that you can handle it. To be honest, the pre-med college curriculum is virtually useless. Perhaps you will have fewer anatomic terms to learn or you'll already know how to use a microscope but the med. school faculty can't assume that you know anything. They will teach you everything you need to know at any particular state of training. One of my classmates was a music major and he did as well as anyone else. He, too, became a psychiatrist.

I have so many doctors in my family that spent their whole lives doing a job they hate. If you wanna practice medicine make sure you understand people and enjoy helping them. Youd think doctors would like helping people but most of them dont. If salary wasnt a factor in careers, most med students wouldnt even be there.

Sounds like medical school hasn't changed since I attended the University of California at Davis in the early 80's. As the narrator stated, the material that is taught in medical school is not difficult, it's the sheer volume of information. I still tell people that medical school was no where near as challenging as my undergraduate degree (Cell Biology UC Berkeley). The key to success in medical school is time management in order keep up with the amount of information you need to know (at least during the first 2 years). By the way, when I attended UC Davis, we were graded with letter grades (A,B,C,D,F). This did add greatly to our stress during 1st year.
@wholeNwon
@wholeNwon 5 жыл бұрын
Our school was very old and very traditional. We were given numerical grades and annual class standing numbers. There were exams every week so that the faculty knew whether we were absorbing the material. They had a LONG tradition of producing outstanding physicians and surgeons. When we took the National Boards, I did not have the highest score in the country but one of my lab partners did. Our class had the highest cumulative score. The faculty were pleased but not surprised.

I recently started my first year of med school and I'm having a hard time adjusting to the packed day-to-day schedule. In college, you get to design your routine and choose your own classes (~2 per day, super chill). Lots of free time in between, loads of time to study outside of class, go to the gym, meet new people, etc. Med school is like being thrown back into high school where your day starts at 8 with classes stacking on each other and no breaks (aside from lunch) until the day is over. Rinse and repeat. You see the same, small cohort of people every single day. Y'all just sit together for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. It's a stark change and I'm not at all used to it. Always preferred the college structure to high school, so I'm not sure what to make of this. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the content and getting to know all my classmates more personally, but this system is definitely taking away from the independence and flexibility I loved during my undergrad. Just a mini rant haha. Good luck to anyone applying!

This was really interesting, I'm a med student, but I study in Germany so the system is completely different. We graduate highschool, depending on your graduation scores you either can study medicine straight away or have to wait up to 7 years. We start with two years (divided in 4 semesters) of preclinical, in which (in my Uni) you also have to work in hospitals and do a few smaller internships. After the pre-clinical, if you were successful with al the pre-clinical exams and tests, you get to write the first BIG exam (four days); after that there's the clinical part (3 years), another HUGE exam, then you're an actual "doctor assistant" and get to work for a full year in an hospital of your choice. After the so-called "practical year", it's time for the last exam and then you can start residency. I really want to become a trauma surgeon, but everybody tells me it's nearly impossible (due to being really unpractical) if you're a small human being like I am. :')

Once again happy to live and study in Switzerland: Path to Medicine: Matura (special Highschool degree, 20-25% of students get it, easy if smart), there are other longer ways as well (eventually everyone can get it if wanted) NC (exam ca 7h, one day, doesn’t test knowledge but ability (eg to understand a difficult text) About 6000/year register, 3000-4000 take test, 1000 get into medical school. 2years preclinical (More bio chemistry physics etc, but also anatomy histology immune system blood etc) Semester tests (in winter and summer), all have to be passed, those failed are repeated in summer, if still a fail retake year (if still fail out, but very rare) 1 year clinical (lectures but more clinical based), same testing as before Congrats bachelors degree Masters: 3 years with 1.5 y of them in a hospital (kind of like internships) with a short master thesis and alternating between lectures and hospital in 1/2year periods. After that (6 years) : master of medicine, in Fall same year you take a national exam, if passed now an assistant doctor (those are the stations doctors in hospital) It takes about 6-8 years (after that you are done, take another exam and are eg a gynecologist) During this time you work (no lectures) and get ca 100k (at least) CHF (~$) a year. Since there is an entrance exam very few actually fail and leave after 2nd year (so no competition, still hard but friendly environment) A semester costs less than 1000$, since Switzerland is small many commute and live at home (or in flats). If you need extra money the government will provide it (depending on your family’s income) I know someone getting 16k per year. Therefore you don’t need loans and have no debts. Age: most finish Highschool at 19/20, start Uni at 20-22 (gap year), 6 years so by 28 your working. But if your fast with no gap year you can be through Med school at 24 (I will likely be)

I don't envy you, Americans. This system seems to by so complicated and much more stressful than european. Where I live and study (Poland, but as far as I know it is similar in most of other european countries ), if you're planning to be a doctor, you're going to med school straight after highschool (recrutation system is based on results of your final exams), after finishing 6 years of studying and training you have to pass just one external test, complete one year of internship, during which your work is really close to the work of a "grown up" professional (and you're receiving salary, shitty but still, you're paid) and that's it, you're a doctor (residency/specialising is another story). And it's all funded from our taxes, no student loans. There're probably some adventages of your way of creating a doc, more time to think through your life decisions, your education is a little more practical and modern from what I heard, but I think that still, I wouldn't trade :P.

As an engineer, I can verify that physics is a hardcore weeder. The class average was 66%. Might be easier if you take alg. based, but I doubt med school would like that.

Pretty accurate. Especially agree that med school material itself is not difficult. There’s just more of it to master over a short period of time in comparison with college. And it’s true that, at least the first two years of med school, you don’t have control over your course schedule like you did in college. The school decides your schedule for you. Now my med school, at least back then, did do courses by semesters. For instance, you’d have Gross Anatomy, Biochem, Histology, and Embryology the first semester and the second semester you’d have Neuroscience, Physiology, Immunology, and then Parasitology and Genetics the last few weeks of second semester. But you did have fewer exams. You’d have two unified quizzes each semester, consisting of ten questions for each of the subjects you were studying, a midterm exam, and a final exam. So less room for error when it came to grades.

Pass/fail is not always a good thing... It does not separate you from your fellow students that just barely pass... Coming from a GME perspective this makes things very difficult during interviews and ranking, with the rumor usmle going to pass/fail it will be incredibly hard to sift out the mediocre students from the ones that excelled

for my medical exam i got OSCE and SOCA, studying for a month but the exam last about 10 mins. That is the longgest 10 mins of my life. studying over 60 disease (pathology, treatment, definition, criteria, pathophysiology, working diagnosis, differentiat diagnosis, prognosis, contraindications, complications). but all in all i feel great being a med school student. amidst all the stressful material and classes i get to befriend a lot of people and the most important thing is we had 1 class for 3 years now and in that time 1 class fells like 1 family

As a pre-med student in a developing country, I'm horrified from the moment this video started to the very end. I mean, I didn't have to go through college for those pre-requisites -- I just went straight from high school. And don't even get me started with the tuition rates -- the average minimum for college tuition is already higher than how much I had to pay seven fold.

Medical school sounds a lot more practical and interesting. I'm not studying to be a doctor, engineering major but I feel like the vast majority of stuff I'm learning is complete BS and busy work just for the sake of it. From the internships ive done too talking to actual engineers it sounds like college is just a big waste of time I'm forced to go through if I want to be an engineer. I dont really learn anything, I just cram a bunch of shit into my head for a test and immediately forget it afterwards because its a terrible way to actually learn something. I wish "engineering schools" were as practical as a medical school sounds.

Med school insiders please respond. So it takes up to 11-15 years to become a doctor
@thinkmedschool785
@thinkmedschool785 3 жыл бұрын
It takes a minimum of 11 years to become a doctor. Anything longer is specialty dependent. 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school and 3 years of residency (family medicine, internal medicine). If you want to be a surgeon its anywhere between 5-9 years of residency depending on the type of surgeon. So that would total out to be 13-17 years total for surgery specialty. Hope this helps!

They have to go through college for 3 yrs and then apply to medschool which may not have any connection with the subjects you took in college which kinda makes it useless. The med school lasts for 4 yrs and after that you have to go for residency which vary in duration from 3-7 yrs.....Besides the cost is just absurd that once you get out of school you're basically broke and is working just to pay off the loans...no savings or anything
