Scientists just used a strand of Beethoven’s hair to sequence his DNA,
and it uncovered some interesting (and scandalous) details. Here's what they found and why the tech they used is a big deal...

Interestingly, the fact Beethoven's ancestors is now known to have been born from an affair is a small step toward confirming the "Beethoven was Black" hypothesis. Not that it's proof. But the greatest argument has been a study of genealogy, meaning that none of his historical ancestors descended from Africans or Belgium's Muslim community. Now that we know some of his ancestors were not actually his ancestors, it makes the "unrecorded affair" explanation much more plausible.

Well after he died, Beethoven's close friends took hair from his body and kept it safe. One couple lost it and them being embarrassed replaced it with the wife's hair. Genome sequencing was able to find out that was not only not Beethoven's hair but likely the wife in the couple. Also historical resources, tracking, the age of what held the hair, etc.

“There was an affair in his paternal line somewhere. Scandalous!” I would be more shocked if over a couple generations there wasn’t an affair. One of the reasons governments are actively opposed to the criminalization of paternity fraud is that it’s a relatively standard practice.
@IONATVS
@IONATVS 10 ай бұрын
Yes, and it is generally thought that it was even more common back then with little in the way of contraceptives and little risk of getting caught. But with how hard it was to prove at the time, they were generally given the benefit of the doubt unless one of the couple confessed it or was caught red handed-and men of power and prestige made sure to throw any so caught under the proverbial bus to preserve the illusion that it was a shocking betrayal they would never condone. So it would still have been a major scandal had it got out.

@@vommYou are misinformed, my good sir and/or madam. @FoxGlove8
@FoxGlove8 10 ай бұрын
@@vomm Mozart (1756-1791) was an incredible performer and composer and wrote over 50 symphonies amidst an array of other pieces; he influenced the works of many many composers after him: Beethoven (1770-1827) included. The latter was originally heavily influenced by Mozart and Hadyn (1732-1809) who tutored then 20 year old Beethoven for a year. But calling him a “poser” would be a downright untruth; he was an excellent composer in his own right and a pioneer for the Romantic Period. Despite their historical proximity, Mozart and Beethoven each had their own purposes and ways to advance classical music as a whole. They were all influenced by one another and frequently “sampled” ideas from eachother. Mozart did this too as evident in his C Minor Mass where he immersed himself in Bach’s liturgical techniques.

I am working as a technician in a genetics lab. I dont know what you mean with Theranos but yeah the actual genome sequencing takes like around 2 days. And this isnt that new as well. The Illumina technology already exists for over a decade. Genome sequencing is already done for years but it was very expensive and the prices are dropping.
@joemorgan6738
@joemorgan6738 Жыл бұрын
I second what the other guy said, I work with Illumina sequenced DNA. The difference is how the DNA is sequenced now. It used to be that DNA was broken into chunks, and that the nucleotides were analyzed one by one. This is still done occasionally and is called Sanger sequencing iirc. How Illumina works is that florescent tags are added to nucleotides that light up once they are added, and a whole bunch of chunks can be looked at with a camera and the reagents can be automatically added so hundreds of chunks can be sequenced simultaneously. We’ve also gotten a lot better at post processing with sequencing, where you could assemble a genome yourself with freely available tools. The Human Genome Project paved the way for a lot of that stuff which adds to the speed increase.

@@swagatbaruah7839 I'm surprised you haven't heard cases where police comb through individual DNA data from those check-your-dna type services without proper warrents? They search through them indiscriminately and use not the criminal's but innocent people's information to try to convict people.

My favorite part of genome sequencing is that while it’s a very difficult biological challenge, it’s arguably a far greater challenge in the computer science aspect. Many fascinating and groundbreaking algorithms were discovered and the field of strings was greatly advanced by this project. I had the privilege of taking a class from one of the main researchers on the genome project and it was absolutely delightful, and mesmerizingly insurmountable

Another application of inexpensive, large-scale genome sequencing is paleogenomics: using ancient DNA in fossils is helping decipher the human lineage, like Denisovans are a sister group to Neanderthals, and their clade diverged from modern humans over 600,000 years ago. The most recent common ancestor of extant humans plus a few dozen recent fossils of H. sapiens is around 320,000 years ago.

Illumina has been around for a while and is pretty well known in the scientific community for making sequencers (paired-end sequencing/ NGS) and there machines have been used in tens of thousands of studies. The machine mentioned is just the latest sequencer they've made........ no real comparison to a scam like Theranos.
@23fallingashes

Illumina is 100% legit. They are the leaders in next generation sequencing. The instrument she is mentioning does exist it's called the Novaseq X Series (although the flow cell shown in the video is for the previous model). And according to Illumina's page the machine can produce 165Gb-16Tb of data in 13-48hrs, which is about the same run time as the previous model but significantly more data. I can tell you, from personal experience, their sequencers are not a joke and in fact work. All in all, Illumina's products have paved the way for some ground breaking research and will most likely never end up Theranos.

There's one thing I would like you to correct. Human Genome Project was supposed to be completed by 2003 but it didn't. It completed in 2006. I have read that Chromosome 1 took the longest and that's why it couldn't be completed by the estimated time.
