I've been a MSW for 30 years and spent majority of my career working as a medical social worker or psychiatric social worker. If you only have a BSW, one will be extremely limited to mainly long term care centers. Hospitals now require a minimum of an MSW and prefer a LCSW. Medical Social Work is extremely stressful job due to all the quick admissions and discharges that now occur in hospitals and other medical centers. It used to be a completely different role than it is now because of all the Medicare regulations. I feel like the jobs are also very competitive due to increase in numbers of people graduating with MSW degrees and schools offering accredited programs. It's very important if you are considering this field, that you graduate from an accredited program. Not all programs are accredited so double check to ensure your programs carries that accreditation status.

Hello, is there any opportunities for individual and group counseling in medical social work? I am ultimately interested in getting my LCSW.

@@TF-wv4cr there are opportunities for individual and group counseling if you work in the field of mental health. You might also have an opportunity to do individual work in a physical rehabilitation center but keep in mind that both of those entities require you to already have an MSW and some, LCSW depending on the state.

I’m currently completing my year 1 practicum in an inpatient rehab facility and This video definitely helped me realize some similarities in our roles. THANK YOU so much. I am working towards my BSW currently, but I plan on getting my MSW as well! I have thought about being a medical social worker for a while now, but I had an experience in a hospital a few months ago with a medical social worker which confirmed that I wanted to be a medical social worker. I made it through my very long hospital stay with her help! Since I had already had a few social work classes, I seen and understood what she was doing, but I still couldn't have made it through my hospital experience without her!

I have 13 yrs of experience working in the medical field but I moved on the the education field and I have always felt like I miss that setting. I am working on my phycology degree but I have net figured bout what I want to do with it until now. I always felt the education system was not a place I wanted to use my degree!!! I graduated in 2018 with a BSW and was able to gain a medical social worker job in 2019. I worked as a discharge planner on the telemetry floor, crisis sw, and assisted with placement for psychiatric hospitals. It was in a small town but I am grateful because my supervisor was the best and assisted in building my confidence. Now that I have my MSW and I have moved I have not been able to get anything but I'm going to wait to take the LMSW test.

Hi! Thank you so much for your video. I am currently a first-year MSW student. I am supposed to be starting my 2nd semester in 2 weeks or so. For the past few days, I've been having anxiety attacks and even considering dropping out of my MSW program because of the realization how long it would take for me to become an LCSW. For example, the requirement in Connecticut to complete 3,000 hours of experience before trying to obtain LCSW licensure. I even was thinking about looking into nursing. However, as I do more research, I realize that I think medical social work is really my calling. I absolutely LOVE a fast-paced and changing environment. I love the thought of crisis-intervention. I love the thought of working in an emergency department. Do you have any recommendations for me? Is it possible to get a medical social work job in the hospital right after I complete my MSW? If I need more advice on medical social work, is it possible I can talk to you further? Thanks so much!! I subscribed :)

Hello there, thanks for your comment and for your transparency with the challenges you are currently experiencing. First, I want to say I empathize with you as I know how stressful the MSW program can be coupled with the thought of what's next after graduation. If you are experiencing any sort of persistent anxiety attacks, please talk to a professional so you can get the support that you need to be your best self. Also, every program has some type of process you must go through to obtain your licensure, don't let the 3000 work hours deter you. It goes by quickly. For example, a full-time job is 2000+ hours in a year. For many Medical Social Work jobs, a full license is not a requirement for employment. A lot of hospitals & medical centers hire limited license clinicians. Please look more into current job openings and requirements in your state so you can have an idea of what to expect. Do your research, you got this! I wish you all the best with school and watch this space for additional resources. God bless!

Congratulations on your BA. This is a great question. You do not need a BSW and a MSW to be a Medical Social Worker. As long as you have a MSW you are good. Keep in mind that in other to gain admission into a MSW program, you may need to take some prerequisites. You should also note that having a BA means that you are only eligible for the traditional MSW track which is 2 - 3 years depending on the school. Please talk to an academic advisor at the University you are seeking admission so they can give you better guidance. All the best with your future studies 🙌🏾

Good question. The best strategy is to check with the School of Social Work at your university for their admission requirements. Generally speaking, the answer is yes, you can pursue an MSW degree with a Bachelors in another field.
