I am one of the unfortunate few who was awake but paralyzed during part of a major surgery. They noticed my heart rate and thought it was because I didn’t have enough pain meds on board. They gave me more and although it didn’t help the terror, it did help the pain. My heart rate and something else finally tipped off the doc that I was AWAKE and he gave some instructions to the anesthesiologist to give me more anesthesia, stopped working on me, and told the people in the room to be quiet as there had been quite a bit of chatter and laughter (I won’t say what they were talking about, except to say it was vulgar and crude). The room got silent and everything went dark. When I woke up in recovery, I told the nurse what happened. At first she didn’t believe me, but when the doctor came to check on me, I told him and he apologized. The hospital didn’t make me pay anything for the surgery. All that being said: Yes, pain meds are needed even when you’re anesthetized.

Sheesh that’s so terrifying and to not be believed after? I’m glad the dr believed you. I’m glad they didn’t charge you for it. I recorded my surgery from a device I placed on my gurney. Not the dr, but the staff were talking crap about me saying that toxic mold isn’t real etc, but one of the nurses shut them all up really quick, explaining that she went through toxic mold poisoning before as well, so she understood how real the poisonous effects are. I appreciate that nurse advocating for me while I was knocked out.

Can confirm. I woke up from bariatric surgery screaming in agony because it felt like somebody had reached inside my spine and was trying to pull it out of my body. I was so confused because the pain was not in the front of my body where I expected it to be, and it took a conversation with the anesthesiologist to understand they may not have given me enough pain medication during the operation.

The same thing happened to me, St Angeles hospital in Tijuana. Apparently they have no word for "redhead", I woke up as the metal door was closing to the operating room, and I was screaming, I was even trying to get up and out. They held me down and were laughing at me. They were laughing hysterically after several minutes. After they held me down again, one of the men came over and said, you're not really awake, you're still asleep you're under anesthesia and we can't give you pain medicine. I started screaming autheda mae por favor, mucho tingo. Something like that, and they started listening better, and once again tried to hold me down, and this one guy, tried to tell me once again, that this isn't real, and to go back to sleep, because it's impossible. I remember every single day, and I cannot get it out of my memory. It haunts me everyday. I wonder if it was my red hair? I will never know, but if you've got red hair I'm f****** warning you. The anesthesia b******* is true. Do you have red hair?

@@hyperionsolomon8718 I don’t, but I’ve started telling anesthesiologists that I’m very resistant to sedation, and that morphine does not work as a surgical pain reliever for me, which are two things I unfortunately have found out through experience. I had a doctor try to give me morphine after a surgery despite me telling him it doesn’t work if I’ve had any type of internal surgery, he didn’t believe me until he realized the reason my blood pressure was so high was because I was in excruciating pain. They gave me dilaudid after that and I was fine. Another time I was able to recall an entire conversation a nurse had with my doctor when I was supposed to be sedated for a quick medical procedure, and I definitely freaked the anesthesiologist out with that one. 😂

Yes ask what meds he is going to give you and what happened. Tell him or her that if you don’t feel comfortable with their response that your well being is far more important than the whole surgery and you would not be afraid to cancel even in the OR and they could take all the backlash if they don’t give you the consideration that you need and to just be forthcoming with reasonings if something comes up. That is your right to autonomy and if you openly cancel even after signing, pre write it in on your consent that you will retain that right until you are comfortable with the staff. You can write in what you need to on your consent form and just initial it and date it. It is your body.

@rohandhanota9944 I couldn’t agree more it’s just sometimes on a practical level a patient needs to know what can/ could or how to go about doing those necessary steps. There really should be an outline as to not only what gaslighting is but in a practical way how we can avoid it. Medical professionals fall victim to it as well, yes, we are sometimes sucked into that cooperate machine that we work for and no gooders will violate HIPPA having a good ol time reading through our confidential medical files. It is almost worse honestly. But hey, if Dr K is still there, it would really be appreciated if you could have legal counsel advice. I have a lifetime of cruel punishment inflicted upon me and I worked as a Trauma Nurse Specialist. Recently I was delivered the world ‘s worst brachial block and I am suffering. Surgeon was great but charting was lies. Thankfully I had a nurse anesthetist and she knew what happened. I just want to prevent this from happening again. To have my rt arm cranked up so high that it flopped and tore til kingdom com was an understatement. Yet I feel like this “investigation” is taking a tour. I feel belittled. The nurses came in there one by one saying how that they all thought that I should be admitted. Being stuck so many times and NOT knowing anatomical markers. led to me having issues with my rt side of my phrenic nerve and that is not a joke, not even for the surgeon. I am almost sorry for bringing it up but I really think that it is important. My friend was there as well even though some might have thought she spoke only one language. She waited for more than 30 minutes on the other side of the curtain. She had the front seats and was very strong. So just as a subscriber, health professional, and patient, please cover as pts what can be done. I was sexually assaulted too. I wasn’t allowed off of work. And I blew the whistle on the majority who were unbelievable. I didn’t do it for me. Now I need help. Sad I suppose. :(

lol same. It was so incredibly painful when I woke up and they put me straight back in the room. The nurse told me to wave my arms around. Do you take meds (like pain meds) for your chronic pain? If you do, you're probably sensitized to them, so when they do give you pain meds during surgery it won't feel as effective to you than if you weren't taking anything. I have this issue too- I have a chronic pain condition and have had multiple surgeries and procedures- when I had surgery they had to keep cranking my dose of pain meds up when I woke up and I barely felt anything. I also had a hard time during recovery because my pain meds didn't feel like they did as much so we had to bump my dose up just while I was recovering. Not sure if this helps but I know that has happened to me. Even when I go in for light anesthesia for a procedure I keep talking until I'm out because generally it takes a little more than it would on someone my size (I'm very small for my height!). Hope this helps! ❤😊

Had open hernia surgery about 13 years ago. I woke up and the pain was so bad I could hardly breathe. The nurse was close by and I told her I was in so much pain it was hard to breathe, her response “no surgery comes without pain”. Went home and the pain was so bad I couldn’t sit or stand, I know that sounds crazy, but I could only stand a few seconds and then would have to sit and then stand back up for a few seconds. I couldn’t lay down and I seriously thought I was going to have to sleep standing up. Sounds crazy, but it was no joke. Even after all these years I remember exactly what the nurse said. Took months for the pain to slowly go away. Have had other surgeries since and they have been much easier to deal with. I believe I know what the problem was, but can’t disclose that information here. The most frustrating thing for me about the whole situation is that the dr’s did not listen to me and it took years before they finally redid the surgery. That was a pain I will never forget.

Surgery is cutting someone open and rearranging their innards. Being in a coma and lying on a bed is quite a different experience, but I would imagine that if it's accompanied by injuries or other painful conditions, they'd need to give pain meds. We found that my mom actually needed pain meds while she was also treated with psych meds to help control her dementia. The psych meds just worked so much better when accompanied with a tiny half-dose of tramadol or percocet. It kept her from thrashing about and throwing things at her caregivers, nurses and even her doctor. We kept her bedbound with meds because she forgot how to move her major muscle groups in sequence to keep her from falling down. Court permission, with her doctor's affidavit, was granted as she was my legal conservatee. Controversial, yes - but absolutely necessary and actually the kindest thing we could do for her.

For most so you don’t wake up in too much pain in recovery. Makes stabilizing pre op pain easier. It depends on the person and procedure. Might that suggest that if a person wakes up and starts crying hysterically, that they didn't recieve enough pain meds during their surgery?
@ninner196
@ninner196 Ай бұрын
Not necessarily. There could have been an emotional trigger also and for some people narcotics can make them actually a bit more prone or sensitive than usual and that is their way to release those emotions. They might cry. Imagine all the presurgery stress and that gets done and now due to the procedure one receives something that helps them relax more and sometimes it goes that way. I don’t use the word hysterical when crying because it’s use is saved many times for women if you look up it’s origin. I have seen men cry deeply. Crying hard is just that. When they are asked if the are having pain most do not remember it but surgeons also can numb internally in the gut for example to help with post op pain. Remember that it takes a bit for our brains to readjust so that the signals are not as uncoordinated and that is why surgery is it’s own area and it is further broken down into specific surgery specialists.

This makes sense to me. My pain specialist (whom I adore) taught me to not wait until pain was unbearable to take meds. Take them as prescribed and breakthrough meds when it’s needed and before it’s unbearable. Otherwise a person often ends up needing MORE pain medication to manage. I think pain in anaesthesia would be the same. Plus there are a number of studies on the advantages of ketamine in a come (without surgery) to provide pain relief. I suspect that is a more contentious issue than straight ketamine infusions and pain medication during surgery!!

I had a myomectomy and remember absolutely everything that happened in the operating room. I remember them saying I was tachycardic, they couldn’t figure out why. It’s because I was paralyzed with Pavulon, but was given no sedation. One year later that anaesthesiologist was arrested for stealing the drugs he was supposed to be giving the patients. They did an undercover operation at the hospital and found that, he was just injecting sailing and keeping the sedatives for himself

You could try asking for an open MRI next time. They are a lot better than being stuck in that tight tube that they put you in during a regular MRI. Less frightening if that's what you're worried about. I'm very claustrophobic!
@ninner196
@ninner196 Ай бұрын
I totally hear you. Talk with your pain mgmt doctor so that the positioning will work be more comfortable. There are open MRIs but as one who has such a painful time laying flat you should be able to get a dose of something perhaps with something like Valium which would increase the effect of the pain medication. They know that having movement artifact doesn’t help anyone. So a one time pain med dose with a mild sedative is what I would ask for. During your MRI request earplugs but also your most favorite calming music and focus in on that. They can turn up the volume and drown out some of the noise. Ask for knee wedges and when you are inside to have those wedges to be more supportive around your arms. Then try to enjoy the music and being in your favorite spot on the planet and use that imagery to carry you through. They will work with you. Have a driver and just sort of lose yourself in the music. As someone who is claustrophobic I don’t even need open MRIs anymore. Ear plugs and loud calming music are my go tos and I have to make sure I take pain medicine. They will help you. Now I sort of view it as a hug and they really pad up the table for me and all of my former issues disappeared.

@@melissalambert3537if you look for an open MRI these days I suspect you’ll have a hard time finding one. My dad who is claustrophobic and in his 70s has always preferred those but they haven’t had them at the last 5 facilities where I’ve had MRIs done in the last two years because the image quality is inferior and just doesn’t show the detail that the doctors are looking for apparently. They are still around but not easy to find and a lot of insurances won’t pay for them. I am also claustrophobic and I can’t do the regular MRI unless it’s for the lower body where I can go feet first and have my head stick out. And I have to take a lot of Xanax. 😖 If it’s anything in the upper body I have to get general anesthesia.

I love when doctors find out you are already on regular strong opiate medication for pain and then expect that it will cover the pain caused by an operation as well. Dude, I take those drugs just to get to the same normal baseline everyone else is naturally at. If anything I need double the pain meds as I’m not opiate naive like most patients. I definitely love the idea of pain relief under anaesthesia. Makes complete sense from my pain experiences

It’s more common than one thinks. I almost died and it was blatantly obvious that I had a LAD occlusion caused by not cholesterol but inflammation and so I had 2 heart attacks or myocardial infarctions with it also affecting my cognitive function. I will never be who I was. If you are ignored at a hospital you can call 911 from that location and by law the ambulance then has to take you elsewhere. I transferred to a level 1 trauma center and the damage was done unfortunately. Whom ever does the EKG just read the words if you don’t know how to read an EKG and you can ask what basic words mean without discussing yourself personally. EKG interpretation isn’t difficult and one can learn the basics maybe even on KZfaq but you have the right to see the copy before it leaves your room. I also want to add that every MI can have its intervention tweaked a bit. If one responds positively with nitroglycerin then that could mean that it really is happening. Some places give aspirin but if it is a true MI with pain then the muscle of the heart releases proteins like overused muscles do so those tests are important as well as a really decent cath lab.

They told me before I went to sleep that they might do a nerve block during the surgery or wait until I woke up and saw how I was doing. I had tib/fib fractures that were fixed with a rod and pins. I woke up in recovery screaming and writhing in pain. They kept telling me to hold still while they finally put the nerve block in, but I couldn't. 10/10 worst pain of my life. I will always ask if a nerve block is possible for any future surgeries (where applicable).

All I could do was whine/whimper and they’d be like “you’re doing so good!” Lol One of the worst pains I’ve ever felt was when all the nerve blocks wore off. I was kept extra long in the hospital because they accidentally collapsed one of my lungs during the operation and I lost a significant amount of blood and needed to transfusion. They also dislocated my jaw and mangled, my left leg searching for veins. But the worst part by far is the fact they deprive me of pain medication. I believe it’s because I have a history of drug abuse or maybe I have a ridiculously high tolerance, either way I have never been a suicidal person.
