I appreciate Medicare making available vaccines to ensure the health of seniors. Yes, occasionally there is a reaction to a vaccine but Shingles is not picnic either, I have had shingles and it lasts longer than the reaction and involves a significant amount of pain.

My husband had his shingles vaccine while we still had employer ins and 100% was covered. Now that we are on Medicare, I had my two injects of Shingrix $160 each and insurance paid $0. Not only was the injection and 3 day recovery painful, but the stress on the pocketbook was definitely felt. However, my mother had shingles when she was 62 and she experienced so much more pain and discomfort than I had from an injection. If this expense saves me from the suffering I watched my mother go through, it is worth every penny.

Very odd. Mine and my husband's were totally covered by our Medicare Advantage insurance.

Pneumonia vaccine is covered by Medicare part B Shingles would only be covered under part D. Cost of Part D vaccines may vary within the different Part D policies that are available.

Aurora sent me a reminder that I was due for a tetanus shot because my 10 years were up. Now I come to find out Medicare doesn’t cover the shot and my supplemental insurance doesn’t either. So, why do I have insurance?

I just received my D-tap vaccine and it is not covered through Medicare or my insurance which is Medical-Gold/CVS. Why isn't it considered a preventative vaccine? It has always been covered in the past?

You need to check what vaccines are covered under your Part D policy and what your share of the cost (responsibility to pay) may be.

AARP Complete Supplemental does not cover Shingrix the new vaccine for Shingles which is 91-98% effective versus Zoster shot which is covered with a significantly lower prevention percentage...does not make sense.

I was extremely upset to learn that the Tdap and Shingles vaccines were not covered by medicare or my supplement insurance. What are we supposed to do if our doctors order them even though we may not be able to afford them? It seems like it would be better to cover the vaccines then to cover treatment if you contract whooping cough or shingles. My mother had shingles and it took months of treatment and drugs to clear up.

The same insurance that you have for your "prescription drug coverage" is the insurance that covers all your vaccines.

My shingles vaccine was covered, but I needed a tetanus shot last year and they gave me tdap instead and now I owe $86. It aggravates me because the tetanus shot is covered and that is all I wanted...certainly not that other stuff. Now I owe $86 and that is a LOT of money for this old lady. Looks like it is a choice between that and my new glasses. I've been wearing the same ones for about 11 years so I suppose I have no choice, but to wait another year...UNLESS, they manage to charge me for something else.

There should be a way to compare Medicare Part D plan payments for vaccinations just like one does with prescription drugs at the Medicare website. I had to pay over $60 for my tetanus shot, will be the last one I get.
@hazellorane7823

My understanding is that if you receive the tetanus shot as a result of a dog bite or some event, Medicare will cover it, but the drs. office must code it correctly otherwise Medicare won't pay for it. So, it seems that they do not consider it preventive. Ridiculous.

I had shingles in 2008 and went to the dermatology department at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The doctor there told me the shingles vaccine was not very effective, saying it was a 50% chance it would not work.
@Historian212
@Historian212 4 жыл бұрын
@@MarieGFlowers That was in 2008. The shingles vaccine has been improved since then. Check about the new one, which is over 90% effective. But expensive, of course.

I've checked with several pharmacies in my area and the Shingrix shot is NOT covered by Medicare and only a VERY SMALL portion is covered by my drug plan. Since shingles is such a big danger for older people, I don't understand why is isn't covered by Medicare. I had the previous shingles shot a few years ago but will not be getting the Shingrix until the price comes down considerably. I'm also concerned about all I've read about the adverse reactions people have had to Shingrix. Perhaps I'm lucky I cannot afford it!

+ticks4ticks4 You can download; but, it doesn't include the section in the back, "Health and prescription drug plans in your area" which is specific for your state. If you need that information, you need to call Medicare and request a book. If you are 65 or older, you should have received the book in the mail. Good Luck!

It's disgusting that regular Medicare Part B doesn't cover vaccinations that the CDC and all reputable doctors recommend for people over age 65, like the Tdap shot to prevent whooping cough (which elders can spread to grandchildren and other young kids, for whom it can be fatal) and tetanus -- which is fatal. I grew up loving this country. Not so much now.

I had whooping cough at about 60 and it was a horrible five months total after a relapse, but I stayed away from people during that time so no one caught it from me, not even my husband.

I had a horrible reaction to the Shingles vaccine--Shingrix. Fever of 102 degrees, extreme exhaustion, weakness, redness and soreness at the injection site. Couldn't think or do anything for four days. It was an entire waste of four days of my life! I am definitely NOT taking the second dose.

Thank you, Mary-Alice, for your concern, but I really don't trust Big Pharma. This was absolute poison to my body. Something this powerful just makes a mess of the immune system. I refuse to do that to my poor body again. I don't know why I let my doctor suck me into this. It has been ten days since my vaccine and my immune system is still out of wack. I am working with alternative methods to get me back on track. I am telling everyone NOT to take the Shingrix vaccine. It is simply too powerful.

The speaker needs to slow down; she is speaking too rapidly and should be coached to reduce the rate of speed when speaking publicly and she needs to train to emphasize the key words in her sentences so that the target population (Medicare enrollees) can actually make sense of, and benefit from the information she is being paid to convey. Pull this woman now and don't allow her to present again until she improves her delivery. Really, who's producing this info-spot?

The Medicare and You video misspells whooping cough as a "whopping cough". Humorous but instilling doubt about government attention to detail. We do need universal publicly funded and managed health care (an improved Medicare for All as proposed by Sen. Bernie Sanders) and to make private insurers go away, but we need to pay attention to detail so we'll end up with a system to whoop about.

What you're suggesting seems to be like what Canada now has. I see you use the method of paying for this coverage as"publicly funded and managed health cared", like Canada! I have relatives who live in Canada and have described to me their health plan. Yes it is publicly funded, through excessive taxation, and as for "managed health care" good luck, if the government manages it like Canada, getting an appointment with a health care professional can be a long wait and getting a primary care physician even longer! Is what we have here in the U.S. the best, absolutely not, could it be improved, absolutely, but we should take a good hard look at countries that offer "socialize medicine" because that's exactly what it would be, and learn from their mistakes! Be careful what you wish for!
