The mantra of Medicine Buddha is well known throughout the Mahayana Buddhist world and has its origins in the Medicine Buddha Sutra, pursuant to which the historical Buddha Lord Shakyamuni proclaimed this profound practice.
The sutra tells of how the Bodhisattva Lord Manjushri sought guidance from the Buddha on how sentient beings of the future ages should protect themselves from illnesses of all kinds which they would have to face due to their karmic obstructions. It was in response to Lord Manjushri's query that the Lord Buddha explained the names, titles, merits, virtues and vows of the seven (7) Medicine Buddhas, and introduced the practice and mantra of the Medicine Buddha.
As the world we live in continues to be plagued by illnesses of body and mind, where primordial ignorance breeds misunderstanding and hatred among people and nations, our kind teacher Geshe Lama Konchok has prepared this special rendition of the Medicine Buddha mantra for its release on this day, 1 January 2024. It is hoped that those who are in need of solace or experiencing illnesses of any kind will find comfort in this blessed mantra chanted by our kind guru, who has decided to release this special rendition of the mantra as a gift to all sentient beings on this special day which is not only New Year's Day, but also Geshe Konchok's birthday.
May the blessings from these incantations pervade the world over. May those burnt from the heat of life's challenges feel the coolness of its balm, and may those forlorn from the cold be comforted by the warmth of its breath. May those who are ill recover immediately and may viruses and plagues of all kinds be forever banished from this world system.
