Thank you for such a lovely video! Your kit is amazing. I am thinking of starting to make myself some Irish clothing from the Early Period (about 800 AD), which is pretty similar to yours (minus the large sleeves). I am from South Cymru (Wales) and have always loved Irish culture, as we are both Celts. Keep up the great work. Take care friend, Sláinte👍

Yes I actually have much more kit for that period but plenty of people doing great work on that era so I wanted to try and portray this often ignored part of irish history.

@@ramblingkern Yes, it is a very interesting time indeed. Your channel is indeed the ONLY channel I have ever found on KZfaq to do living history with this period in Ireland. It is a time when so much of Europe wore some what similar clothing, but the Gaels were so different. I'm yet to find a channel doing this for Welsh history. Again, great work!

Absolutely love the butter in the lettuce? Cabbage? Leaf. I never would have thought of that. Of course, I live on the edge of the desert so the weathers not cool enough to do that about 8-9 months of the year.

Yes a cabbage leaf I use them a lot for transporting stuff like this and you can throw them into the stew when done which is an added bonus.

Another great video! Now I am curious about the food medieval Irish people ate before the Columbian Exchange. From my very little research it seems that its was mostly a grain and dairy based diet supplemented by local vegetation, and meat/fish. Perhaps an interesting series could be made from this; particularly the amount of variety in dairy products that they made. Also this is a long shot ;) but are you aware of any finds or depictions of slings in Ireland? They are attested to in several stories like the Tain Bo Cuailnge, so it must have been an important weapon (at least culturally speaking). I would like to make my own Irish-style sling made from braided cords, but all my research reveals that they only used two leather thongs attached to a leather pouch. I'm not convinced that this was the only form of slings they made since it was such a revered weapon, and was curious if you knew anything more (perhaps another video idea!)
@ramblingkern
@ramblingkern 2 жыл бұрын
I sling as often as I can and want to do a full series on it but it really seems to be a totally ignored section of history I will see what I can dig up and start working on that soon. As for food I plan on doing an overview of the food I ate in this video and why. Irish food is actually fascinating as much of what we know comes from a huge amount of laws based around them.

GG wp on the 1k! those sleeves look like they belong around the tribe meeting table and not out in the woods! i guess they'll shorten with time anyway after snagging, tripping and burning off the ends :) edit:that pack sack with frame is awesome looking! keep her lit!

So this leads to an interesting question: as you're out in the wilderness, should you run into an unpleasant fellow and are forced to engage, what would be your primary weapon of choice?
@ramblingkern
@ramblingkern 2 жыл бұрын
I mean in the Irish wild you're never far from civilization of course the first thing would be to try and calm the situation but I always hike with my shillelagh so likely that. If I were to talk about when the kern was prevalent I would likely hike with a spear and use that as a staff.

With all the effort you've gone to for historical accuracy, why the very modern wood stove? Are you not allowed to make a ground fire bespite it being rather damp in you camp site?
@ramblingkern
@ramblingkern Жыл бұрын
Outdoor fires of any kind in Ireland are illegal I am walking a thin line using this one as is. However the area I was in was devastated by wild fires in recent years so it was the responsible choice to use a modern stove. I don't like the added weight etc but it's the right thing to do.

It just takes practice. You get a "feel" for it that can't really be explained in words: once you have the feel for it, it should only take one or two strikes to get a good spark into the charcloth.

Yeah nice blog but I doubt drovers or Hunters wouldn't of worn a dress the would of worn primitive wool shirts and blankets similar to a kilt and or the or sheep skin coats I like what your trying to portray but what your doing is a little impractical and not quite right
@ramblingkern
@ramblingkern 4 ай бұрын
Hi John the clothes worn in this video are exact replicas from both artist depictions and actual bog finds. Wool coats were worn but I'm getting one constructed at the moment again based on a bog find. The clothing was surprisingly very practical and is exactly what was worn in Ireland in the 1500s.
