Today we take a look at a couple of original swords from the Oakeshott Institute, as well as the Arms and Armor Bohemian Broadsword. This is a preview of a lecture by Dr. Nathan Clough that will be presented at the Valley of the Sun Cutting Tournament in Phoenix, AZ. next weekend, Jan. 13-14 2024. The argument is that swords with a flattened diamond cross section in the blade are over-represented today relative to the wife variety of blades from the 12th-16th centuries. In this video we look at swords with, repetitively, a flattened hexagonal cross section, a lenticular fullered cross section, and an essentially flat section.

As always, our swords are entirely made by us at our shop in Minneapolis, MN out of 6150 carbon steel, hardened and tempered to 50-52 Rockwell. Our swords are made to look, feel, and function just like the historical originals on which they are based. Check out our full selection here: www.arms-n-armor.com

2 years ago I finally got a variable speed grinder and immediately wondered why I was screwing around with single speed grinders for over 20 years...

I learned something studying Japanese sword arts that might give some insight into European battle swords. I learned that heavier swords cut thick rolls of tatami MUCH better. And that the moves used for fighting opponents with Japanese armor are mostly big cleaving hews, and that the fencing style moves used for European blosfechten don’t typically even cut through a denim wrapped tatami mat. This may explain why 14 century swords were heavier. They needed to contend with padded jacks and boiled leather.

My Father was a Former US. Marine, when He was alive he fueled my enjoyment for collecting swords and knives. I remember one he bought me at a local Flea market, there was a knife vendor who had one of those "Toledo Colada del Cid" 32" Conquistador bar type "generic bar" sword for $20, being 11 , I thought it was the raddest thing's. It was a piece of junk, but the memories make the item you recieve....just thought I'd share that. You Guy's Absolutely Rock at what you do!!!

That last 1/3rd of the blade being thin makes sense for cutting through soft targets. Which is what one would face most of the time in their day to day. I mean how often in someones life would they have to worry about facing heavily armored opponents compared to "softer enemies" right? Lol

Thanks for the video. The Bohemian looks really nice. Swords with hexagonal cross section blades seem to be really rare or pretty much non-existent in the medium price range (or lower). One would have to go to the higher end or custom pieces to get one to play around with.

It's so unfortunate that we don't have more broadly available written context to the hows and whys of certain sword design decisions. Was a given sword meant primarily for use on horseback, and/or was the wielder bigger and stronger than average? Was a cut-centric longsword meant solely as an accessory for walking around in civilian clothes, or was the common sidearm of someone who very rarely had need to ever use their sidearm in battle? How much training time might have been dedicated to optimizing the use-case differences in the swords a man-at-arms had at their disposal?

Forgive me for saying so but I really do not like type 17s. Not that there is anything functionally wrong with them but for me they are just too reminiscent of the very cheapest crappiest wallhangers. That wrythen hilt is beautiful though.

The blade styles vary quite a bit and I suspect fashion and economics drove most of the decisions.

4:17 I'm sure it's in good hands, but it is just questionable that privates can own things that old (and do whatever they want with it). Can you tell us for how much do you think that sword would sell? I'm really curious how much would it cost to buy a XII century sword of that quality (not that I intend to). It is gorgeous.
