Aequorea victoria, also sometimes called the crystal jelly, which emits blue-white fluorescent light, led to the discovery of a material that is indispensable in modern medicine.
Research on the luminescent substance (GFP: Green Fluorescent Protein) of the one jellyfish has not only led to dramatic advances in molecular biology and basic medicine, but also to the development of new drugs and revolutionary treatment technologies, a discovery that has become a "revolution in observing the mechanisms of life" that is indispensable to life science. Dr. Osamu Shimomura, who was involved in this research for many years, was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
[ Aequorea victoria, also sometimes called the crystal jelly, is a bioluminescent hydrozoan jellyfish, or hydromedusa, that is found off the west coast of North America.
The species is best known as the source of two proteins involved in bioluminescence, aequorin, a photoprotein, and green fluorescent protein (GFP). Their discoverers, Osamu Shimomura and colleagues, won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their work on GFP.
The synthetic plasmid "pGLO," which is used as a gene vector to create genetically modified organisms, is generated from this species.
