In this short teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche discusses the relationship between meditation and religion. He explains that for basic meditation we don’t need to be Buddhist or religious. Basic meditation is like going to the gym and exercising. It is mental exercise to make make our minds calm and peaceful and doesn’t require that we change our beliefs. The increased concentration and mental stability that comes from meditation could make us better able to practice the religion of our choice. Should we want to go beyond basic meditation, we may want to become Buddhist at that point.
This video includes subtitle captions in English, German, and Spanish.

Reflection Questions
Is it your experience that practicing basic meditation, for instance calm abiding or compassion meditation, makes your mind calmer without changing your beliefs?
Have you found that practicing meditation increases your ability to practice the religion of your choice, or have you met people that feel that way?

Thankyou ! I've used meditation throughout my whole life... but I have no religion. I enjoy being part of the universe , as myself. I have always felt like I was using someone else's religion to benifit my own life, it made me feel bad and I didn't like telling people I meditate , Incase they judged me for not being Buddhist. So Thankyou, for making it clear for me that I am welcome to use meditation techniques free of judgement.

You don't have to be a buddhist for any reason at all. The greatest spiritual teachers, like Mooji, Rupert Spira, Eckhart Tolle, Ramana Maharshi, Nisargadatta and others, are not buddhists, nor christians or from any other religion. I think even the buddha said that we must get rid of all identities (the "ego"), because an identity exists only if the "beingness" identifies itself with a thought. And in order to know ourself, we have to lose all identifications and to do that we have to know our true self as pure awareness. Meditation has nothing to do with any religion of course. And the buddha was not buddhist. Even to go deeper into understanding and wisdom, we don't have to get a new identity. Wisdom comes if the attention rests in awareness and is not idendifying itself with thoughts or feelings.

Do you have any tips for being a lay person but having a calm mind and being a happy person? I am 15 and in High school, about to do exams, and my head is very chaotic, I need to focus my mind but I find it difficult with outside pressures.

+Cardinal Ximenez Cardinal, first I want to thank you for your edition of the Greek New Testament you put out in the 1500s. Lol. I personally think like reading the Tao Te Ching or Dhammapada creates a sort of peacefulness almost like meditation. Psalms also, depending on the Psalm can do something like this.
