In this short teaching, Mingyur Rinpoche discusses the relationship between meditation and religion. He explains that for basic meditation we don’t need to be Buddhist or religious. Basic meditation is like going to the gym and exercising. It is mental exercise to make make our minds calm and peaceful and doesn’t require that we change our beliefs. The increased concentration and mental stability that comes from meditation could make us better able to practice the religion of our choice. Should we want to go beyond basic meditation, we may want to become Buddhist at that point.
