To the people saying this crossbow wouldn't penetrate armour: you are making a mistake by assuming all plate armour were the same high quality standard. Armour quality would vary, so would the effectiveness of the crossbow. And most combatants wouldn't even wear plate armour.

Thiago Monteiro given crossbows draw length disadvantage to bows, A crossbow With a 200lb draw weight would be about as powerful as a 50lb bow, definitely not an armor piercing weapon.

Manderson matters but we are talking about 300-450 lb crossbows and if you take heavier bolts you can weak the effect of draw length
@mandersonmatters3012
@mandersonmatters3012 9 жыл бұрын
BuGGyBoBerl bolts weren't usually heavier than arrows and you can make the arrow/bolt as light or heavy as you want so it's not really an issue. The crossbow in this video had a 200 pound draw weight, a crossbow with a 300-450 pound draw weight would equal a bow with a 70-100 pound draw weight a powerful bow but not nearly as powerful as a 150 pound English war bow.
@BuGGyBoBerl
@BuGGyBoBerl 9 жыл бұрын
Manderson matters 1.the 150lb warbow is not the regular one. only a few can shoot him consistent in a battle. 2. ofc you can make arrows/bolts heavier as you please, however thats the main difference/advantage between crossbows and warbows. make heavier arrows and you lose a lot of velocity. make heavier bolts and you barely lose any velocity. you can fire heavier bolts with a crossbow and still have the same velocity. due to the limited materials abilities and the reduced draw length a crossbow has a maximum acceleration potential. you can shot very light bolts at, lets say, 60m/s. however you can shoot pretty heavy projectiles at 55-60 m/s too. ofc if they get far too heavy they lose velocity but you can heavier bolts thx to the absurd draw weights
@mandersonmatters3012
@mandersonmatters3012 9 жыл бұрын
I haven't heard much about crossbows being able to shoot heavy bolts without losing velocity but I suppose that makes sense . Yes 150lb war bows weren't the most common but given that there is a debate if even 250 pound to 200lb warbows could peirce plate than certainly only the most powerful crossbows were effective against plate.

It's extremely doubtful a 200lb crossbow with such a short power stroke could pierce historical plate armor - or even mail with padding, for that matter.

tbone martinez Well the crossbow has a 6 inch draw length on average and a longbow has a 22-30 inch draw length meaning the longbow has a lot more time to accelerate an arrow, so for a crossbow to be as or more powerful then a longbow it has to have somewhere around 3.5-4.2 times the draw weight which requires a cranequin or windlass to operate.
@BuGGyBoBerl
@BuGGyBoBerl 9 жыл бұрын
Manderson matters 1. heavier projectiles lead to higher penetration and wont slow down the projectile much in contrary to using heavier arrows for bows. so you can weaken the effect of shorter draw lenght this way. 2. you can span up to 450lbs crossbows with a simple mechanism like goat foot lever

0:39 That's a damn weird angle the bolt landed in. Look at the guy, he is holding the crossbow a bit downwards and the bolt flies from straight in front of the target. Now I'm not saying this matters, but why couldn't they just have shown us where that shot really landed? Edit: Yeah, seems like they did the exact same thing at 1:19.

The bolt that strikes the target is indeed a separate shot. Look at the bolt Kevin is shooting at 0:40. The fletches are black, whereas the fletches of the bolt that actually hits the target are white.

although the crossbow couldn't piece plate, there was a weapon of the ages that without a doubt would and that's the roman ballista with over 10 times the kinetic energy of a crossbow and forged with an armour piercing tip, this piece of artillery would genuinely penetrate any man on the field ;) this was the equivalent of the modern day sniper rifle, range 400 meters, and atleast half as many joules of energy as a modern AK47.

Seriously, steel plate and chainmail is incredibly hard to penetrate. Perhaps at close range with the right type of arrowhead it could stick, but it wouldn't do enough damage to their center mass to kill or even incapacitate them. I wouldn't be surprised if the blunt damage inflicted by shooting at somebody's steel helm would be lethal though.

Even 1250 lb windlass crossbow cannot go through a properly made plate armor. Well, at least not enough to do any damage.

BOLTS CANNOT FULLY PUNCTURE PLATE ARMOUR. People you have to understand, that infrantry didn't put plate armour over their naked bodies. They wore normal clothes, boiled leather, mail AND THEN plate armour. So even if a bolt could slightly penetrate the plate, chances of it coming in contact with skin is EXTREMELY small. At close range probably, but at medium/long range never.

No crossbow can penetrate quality plate, with chainmail and gamberson underneth. Even at short range. The other story is to hit into weaker spots, or into visor of helmet, or face. Anyway, 200 pound draw weight crossbow don't do anything against armor. The ones for penetrating armor were heavy windlass 1000+ pounds crossbows.

Farseer1995 slightly wrong boiled leather OVER not under mail was used only in the 13th century in France called a "Cuir Bouilli" which didnt turn out much better than just mail... a normal 15th century knight in full plate harness (german) would wear an aketon Underneath the armour which is enough ! Only the italians wore a mail shirt and skirt under the harness until about 1420 or so after that they discarded that aswell.

A crossbow bolt wouldn't go through a hardened steel cuirass only mail and it might puncture a munitions quality piece of armour but the damage to the enemy would be negligible. A common misconception is that the crossbow was anti armour, on the contrary it was anti light infantry by a long shot and English armies preferred bowmen anyway so when the rare noble approached in a suit of plate they could aim for the gaps and theres an obvious rate of fire advantage. The only real advantage of the crossbow is it requires less training. Crossbows have very similar draw weights to warbows unless you get something really heavy. Also one last point, crossbows are much, much older than longbows; even the anglo saxons used crossbows. The longbow surpassed it technologically for a number of reasons mostly range + rate of fire. And England by the 13th century had the infrastructural ability to train youngun's from age 11 in the use of the longbow to field a professional army which the anglo saxons didn't.

Not the only advantage. You can snipe with it, leaving it loaded and firing quickly when needed. Also useful to threat people.

ahem...an automatic expert are you? well FYI the fletching on the back of the bolt (or arrow in this case look it up) dosnt just make the arrow stable but back heavy and over even just a short distance it can reduce angle and if you take a close look at the target the arrow is still on a slight angle.

not exactly, i had made a crossbow and i fired it into a mat at an angle and because the mat was so tough, the arrow would turn to the level of the mat, besides, that arrow was tilted a little bit

It is pretty amazing that such a small (comparatively to longbows) crossbow has a draw weight of 200 lbs.
@likliklik9515
@likliklik9515 9 жыл бұрын
It is very powerful I will give you that but bear in mind it's limbs aren't as long with a smaller power-stroke. In conclusion this means that it's draw length is less powerful than a 200" longbow.
@Vccine
@Vccine 9 жыл бұрын
Jowen Dyer Yes I do know that. If the span length or draw length is only 15 inches (for example) and a large size man can draw a bow up to 30 inches, technically the crossbow would be twice as weak. Still, it requires so much less strength and skill to use crossbow than a bow

"Chances are it will go penetrate plated armour from this range" How about instead of making claims, you actually prove it. Bbased on my experience of shooting crossbows (175LB draw weight) and numerous other sources, crossbows, in general are ineffective at penetrating thick metal platings. This "expert" should have demonstrated it by shooting at a metal plate... In this video it is shown that a thick wooden silhouette did a perfect job of stopping the bolt.
