Black Moses, the original LP cover of which unfolded in the shape of a cross three feet wide and four feet tall, "is a wondrously crafted, intense evocation of the vagaries of love gone bad," in the words of Stax historian Rob Bowman. Hayes used songs popularized by such artists as the Jackson 5, the Carpenters, Toussaint McCall, Little Johnny Taylor, Jerry Butler, the Whispers, Ray Price, and Dionne Warwick, along with his own highly erotic "Good Love," to express the heartbreak he was feeling about the breakup of his own marriage. "Isaac's ability to take other people's material and make it so deeply personal," Bowman observed, "is nothing short of brilliant."

The whole album is BAD!!!! That orchestration, his voice (sultry evocative passionate) and ability to take us on a love journey. This is SOUL MUSIC. This album is over50 years old and still ohhhh so doggone good.

It sounds mid to late 1990s, both me and my Uncle assumed Hot Buttered Soul was just before Ike's "South Park era", and thought perhaps Black Moses released when the show was out. Two albums released during the exact era of Elvis and The Beatles, yet sounding like something you'd listen to when the PS1 was king, Windows 95 was out, and those naughty 900 commercials lol. I'd call that being 25~30 years ahead of his time musically, even the fact that Ike was bald, shirtless, black sunglasses, & wearing chains. That's straight-up 1990s fashion/aesthetic in 1969! He looked just like the video game character Shadow Man too, my favorite game from 1999 :)

I am a 80's baby and grew up on a lot of old school music and still Isaac Hayes is one my favorites and he music never dies. I stumbled on this by accident and love it as if it was new music......don't make them like they use to...

What memories !! I literally wore my copy a black Moses out. Isaac Hayes was drenched in soul I remember hearing that he used to have a Rolls-Royce with a solid gold grill. Until the IRS took it away from them him. There was nobody like Mr. Isaac Hayes

I was a early 70 era.but born in the 60s. I was hip or turned on to Issac Hayes by Woodrow Kellum our next door neighbor. Being 7 8 years old it was a mind blowing thing, watching the lady's walking the girls playing it me a gentleman in treatment to women as so to my wife of 40 years. I discovered him because of South Park and WWF. I pulled the trigger in buying Hot Buttered Soul and Black Moses on CD in March 1999 as a 9 year old kid, when he opened up the WrestleMania '99 Rage Party. First time I saw him perform on stage and he won me over as a fan. The day after that show I got the CDs after school, plopping them right into my Japanese Sega Dreamcast. Those albums sounded very mid/late 1990s to me and my Uncle, and we had no idea they were from 1969 to 1972, and my Uncle is a true personification of that era. Even Ike's fashion sense was 90s-like at that time (black sunglasses, bald head, chains, shirtless). He looked like just my favorite video game character Shadow Man, a game from 1999, yet Ike did this in 1969 :) Also, I remember well those old CDs were put back on the shelves in record stores because of the renewed interest of Ike through South Park. I was one of those customers and I'm 33 now.
