Here is it, the Sonata Ballade, a majestuous, beautiful, bright and dark at the same time. It is one of my favorite of Medtner, and one of his easiest sonatas to listen to.
The composer revealed that this sonata was based on a poem by Afanasy Fet describing Christ’s temptation in the wilderness-further evidence of the spiritual element in his work and the loftiness of his inspiration. There are three movements, joined without a break. The first opens with a joyful song celebrating the radiant beauty of spring. This implies the immanence of a Creator and the need for religious faith, something seemingly denied by the second subject, restless and anxious in spirit, the conflict reflected in the cross-rhythm of the accompaniment. The struggle continues in the development, and although the buoyant mood of the opening returns, it is utterly dashed in the turbulent coda which is brought to a despairing conclusion by a series of angry chords.
Both the brief second movement, Introduzione, and the Finale are headed by quotations from the poem itself: ‘Satan stole away’, ‘And the Angels came’, charting the triumph of righteousness over evil. The malevolent ‘satanic’ theme of the Introduzione is gradually rebuffed as the movement proceeds by fragments of another melody, one that is at last heard in full as the serene second subject of the Finale. One of Medtner’s most beautiful inspirations, this was clearly special for the composer; he used it again in two other works with religious overtones, a setting of Pushkin’s poem The Muse and the Piano Quintet. After a stern fugal episode based on the satanic theme, the music culminates in a joyous restatement of the second theme and the sonata’s opening, against a background of pealing bells.

Tozer performance is wonderful. He plays with an incredible fire in powerful/violent moment, and with an amazing delicate touch in the dreamy/loving/calm moments. His playing is vast, incredibly colorful, and breathtaking. The way he accentuate the last trills of the Introduzione is particularly impressive, original, and works perfectly. Eckardstein performance is similar to Tozer, but he brilliantly follows the score, every single dynamic. Its as colorful as Tozer (if not even more in some parts). I found the fugue of the Finale particularly better with him. Milne's playing is more reserved, as always with him. He is more accurate and articulated, at the price of fire (but not at the price of emotions). In fact, his playing is very interesting. He takes a slower approach, and reveal every detail from that masterpiece. It's dance-like, contemplative at some parts, and dreamy during pratically the whole piece. It result on a totally different (but not less good) performance compared to Tozer's or Eckardstein's ones. As for Medtner now, well that's one of the best exemple to show how Medtner played astonishingly his own works. His interpretation is just brilliant. The voicing is incredible, it mixes every upper interpretation. It's violent when it needs to be, dreamy when it needs to be, and, well you got it, everything is well balanced in it. My favorite interpretation would be Eckardstein or Tozer.

It's actually so much better in terms of rubato and voicing that the others seem like a superficial reading, even if they might be mechanically perfect. Tozer comes closest to this IMO, even though he is not as good as Medtner. We really should bring back the Rachmaninoff style of playing, with voicing and rubato above all else, at least for romantic music...

May I recommend as a fifth listen, better in my opinion than any of the four (admittedly excellent) recordings here: Poom Prommachart.

My favorite interpretation of this sonata is Mejoueva's, but I feel quite comfortable with Milne's pacing too. As for Tozer, his performances of Medtner's 3 piano concertos and short pieces are incomparable, but some of his playing of piano sonatas are just too rushed IMO.

I actually prefer for piano concertos Gilham for the first, Hamelin for second, (but Tozer is also awesome), and for the 3 is the best Demidenko imo.
