Maybe cause I was born in 1980 & watched live many matches of the 2 great returnerners of that era i got other opinion of who is the best returner in history of tennis. Btw one of those 2, was my idol growing up- Yevghenii Kafelnikov! Actually after i saw live how he got through to the final and won a GS at Roland Garros 1996 (1st GS in Russia's history) i got hooked completely to tennis😏 Before, it was only football/soccer. So as i mentioned Kafelnikov was a great returner, but he was considered the 2nd best in the world in his era, so the nr one 20-30 y.ago and by my standards the greatest returner, was Andre Agassi. And behind that statement is a lot of proves, cause from the mid 80's till mid 00's there were a lot of big guys, around 2m height, playing serve & volley. If we talking only about speed serve, guys like Rusedskii, Krajicek, Ivanisevich, Philipouses even young Roddick etc, they constantly served 215km/h+, So just to return their 1st service was an achievement, but to do it with "interest" was almost impossible, but Andre somehow was doing it. And of course serve & volley players🎉, who after 1st serve just run to the net (Medvedev's nightmare) like Tim Henman, Patrick Rafter, Boris Becker & of course the greatest rival of Agassi - Pete "pistol" Sampras! To outplay Sampras in the 90's was as hard as defeat Novak today! But Agassi did it on multiple occasions, and of course his return of Samprases crazy serves were crucial! So my pick for best returner is Andre Agassi!

I could agree with this except I would put Novak for mental toughness without a doubt. Rafa is definitely in a close second, but Novak has showed throughout his career that despite all the adversity that he has had to overcome he is the king of mental toughness and fortitude. Saving match points 3 times in grand slam finals against the second greatest player of all time? That’s the epitome of mental toughness! But Rafa is definitely second.

Completely disagree. I would put them exactly the opposite order. You must have just been watching tennis for a few years, but if you did from 2005 you would literally see how the hardest player to play mentally in the world would still be Rafa. Too bad injuries held him back so much, he could have 6 or 7 more slams by now.

@@user-fp8vl3mb2i for example I will tell you one thing ,currently to win against Novak ?how much mental effort it takes for player ?The same thing when Roger was dominating from 2003-2008 like no one can defeat him it’s Rafa who defeated him continuously in all the slams in all surfaces, when you say 7 finals in 2011 then what about before 2011 ,Nadal was way dominant against Nole and he won 8 consecutive matches. It’s just a phase between when one started dominating each other.Just don’t look tennis in past few years or when novak started to catch his prime ,Consider all factors when they started their careers.People argue the novak snatched away 2019 final from Roger which shows his mental toughness,But do you know how much it takes for a 21 year old to defeat 5 time defending grass court king in 2008 Wimbledon ?

Mental toughness it has to be only one Novak Djokovic..

I think it depends sometimes. Rafa usually never concedes a point. He is feistier than Nole. Nole was mentally drained in that USO 2021 final, but I think he could have won it if he stayed fierce throughout the match the way Rafa remained in the AO 2022 final. Had Nole extended it for one more set, Daniil would have started to fatigue and feel pressure himself, and that's when Nole would have had the chance to turn it around ala AO 2022. On the other hand, Nole has shown he is mentally stronger with the audience against him than Rafa, but just by a nudge. I mean, for the first 10 FOs, the frenchies jeered at Rafa, but eventually started to turn around (the way Nole is finally doing with the USO audience). I think Nole has been tougher because he was jeered at practically everywhere for most of his career, and against almost anyone but specially against Fedal, and, despite that, he kept on winning.

Tss... It has always been said Nadal. Recently I hear many people say Novak, Novak, but to be honest I could put both but had I to pick only one I still take Nadal.

my favorite celebrations were always from Isner. He was so tall he had to pause his emotions to carefully get to his knees so that the full fall to the court didn't cause injury.

I think the fastest guy is probably De Miñaur. But speed without positioning doesn't work, same case for Monfils. That's why Meddy prefers his speed, he gets to the balls but usually positions himself well to return the shots, unlike Demon or Gael. Alcaraz himself is good at that too, but I agree Daniil is even better, because his whole game depends on it, whereas Alcaraz would get to the ball and smash it at neckbreak speed to score winners.

Smart choices, would make a couple tweaks though "IMHO" (before the fanatics come after my life) Forehand I'd give to Rafa. Roger a very close 2nd, even Verdasco infact. Mental toughness I'd have to give to Novak due to external factors and his mind boggling upliftment in pressure points. Albeit if Novak is the benchmark at 100%, Rafa is like right behind at 95% I'd say. Rest of the tour doesn't even come close.

Fed's forehand is better on grass and hard, Rafa's on clay. So overall have to give that one to Federer as it's just more versatile and effective overall. Fed can not only deliver extreme power and spin like Nadal, but he can also manage extreme power coming at him, especially flat shots on fast surfaces, Nadal's forehand breaks down a little under those conditions. Also got to remember Nadal is a lefty which means he's naturally going to get more shots to his forehand than right handed players, so he get's to capitalise on being able to exploit his forehand slightly more often than Federer gets to which makes it seem more effective than it actually is, it's not because he is hitting better forehands, but rather he is hitting more forehands more easily - less running around to forehand required, he's just in a better position to hit it optimally more often than right handed players. Another way of putting it is that right handed players have to run around their backhand to hit a forehand more often than lefties do, so lefties are in a better position to hit a forehand slightly more often than right handed players are. - That doesn't mean their forehand is better, it just means that they get more opportunities to exploit the more powerful shot (forehand > backhand in >95% of players)

And now it's my turn, a random KZfaq commenter. Forehand --> Del Potro's pure canon, Runner up --> Ruud's hybrid whip forehand form is a beauty (mixture of Rafael Nadal's spin and Djokovic's Stability), Honorable mention --> Kyrgios Backhand --> 2 hander goes to Djokovic, 1 hander goes to Wawrinka's pure canon Serve --> Fed. Return --> The Djok. Slice --> Dan Evans, and Me. At Net --> Fed. Touch --> Dustin "Dreddy" Brown Speed --> De Minaur, Alcaraz Flexibility --> Medvedev Mental --> Djokovic Competitiveness --> Alcaraz, Fed Celebration --> Med.
