Before Goa’s 2023 season began, quite a few new cafes and restaurants opened in the Colva-Benaulim stretch. But only some of these are Goan-run, and one of these is Colva’s Mee Maws. Mee Maws is one of Goa’s many women-owned businesses

If you’re wondering, this name is not the usual mixing of two Goan names into one. The MeeMaw here recalls what Sheldon Cooper called his grandmother when he was growing up in Texas in the US. For owner Shamim and her husband Rajkiran D’Souza are huge fans of The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, just like we are.
The Texas connection makes up the menu too, with real American style hot dogs and sloppy joe sandwiches, and huge burgers that are larger than your hand.

Mee Maws is located in Vanelim, next to Florida Gardens, on the Dabolim-Cavelossim Road. From the Benaulim side, drive straight up the Dabolim-Cavelossim Road from Maria Hall towards Colva. After the chapel of Menino Jesus, you will reach a line of shops. Mee Maws is among these shops
Today, Maria, Roma and Jaya are trying different versions of mac and cheese, and Lesley is having a gourmet New York hot dogs (Rs 245), stuffed with cheese and kheema in barbecue sauce, which owner Shamim highly recommended. Really delicious and filling, if somewhat messy to eat
We also tried the mac and cheese, garlic bread, mashed potato and sausage platter, mac and cheese with mushroom platter and mac and cheese in a mug, with bacon topping. This last mac and cheese in a mug is one of many mug meals at Mee Maws, something we don’t see often in Goa
Lesley had a very nice Irish coffee, with a touch of bourbon. Everyone tried it
Another day, Lesley was back at Mee Maws with Maria, Roma and Viola, all of whom are having a tough time deciding what to eat. Finally, we decided on chicken crostini, tomato and basil crostini, the Texas sloppy joe sandwich, a huge Oreo chocolate finale milkshake, a smoked hot chicken sandwich and finally, the blueberry parfait, which Maria thought was Gadbad
When next we passed by Mee Maws, they had just added burgers to their menu. My homie Punya had a beef smash double patty burger, which looked rather massive. He’s a big guy, yet he just about managed to hold the burger in his hands. He loved the taste.
It’s messy work to eat a Mee Maws burger, but very satisfying. And it’s definitely for those with big appetites. Between us, Maria and I could not even finish one Chinese crispy chicken burger.
The last thing we tried was a beef kheema cheese roll, which was tasty but let down by the bread roll, which kind of collapsed
The size of the portions here make the prices pretty good for youngsters even on pocket money budgets too. At Rs 220, the chicken burger we had is more than enough for two.
Next time you’re passing through Colva-Benaulim and want something different from the usual tiny burgers and boring hot dogs we get in our Goan bakeries, step into Mee Maws and try the real thing!
