I do teach people as well based on accent switching from A.E to B.E and vice versa. It's a great tool. You've mentioned about other teachers and you said surprisingly wonderful thing that there are undoubtedly better teachers than you, you don't boost yourself about it being on tv/youtube topping yourself whatsoever. Thank you for this. To me, it's successful when we get better by not comparing ourselves to others. You've earned respect for that. I teach English + accent along with finance because of being bored with English and stuff I already know. I simply cannot believe you still find drive in teaching people general English. I don't know you, maybe it's not only general English. But anyway, that was worth listening to. Spread your word Arlena. A word from still an English teacher.

I agree with her 100%, I started learning english quite late comparing to my friends ( I was 10) and for the next years my teachers were either apprentices or teachers who would let us copy and paste from internet in order to get a good grade. My knowledge of english was extremely low by age of 19, just to pass my school leaving exams I decided to learn single words as I knew it was too late for grammar. Then I moved to London and I realized 70% of things I learned at school were pronounced completely different and this is was the main reason why people wouldn't understand me. It didn't matter that I didn't know grammary too well, loads people make grammar mistakes..it was mainly the fact that I didn't know how to pronounce simple words. Example- I was told that " damaged" is to be pronounced as " dimejdżt" instead of " damedżt" .

It makes such an impression on me because I can only focus on one of those things at once 😅! But anyway, I respect her so much for what she is doing. It is only thanks to her that I can now easily hear the difference between British and American accent and tell them apart... and particularly - that I was able to hear which one they had been speaking during this interview. Thanks for all, Arelna, and keep doing this precious work you are doing❤️!

Arlena is right! It's so increadibly important to focus more on pronunciation. People neglect this area much too often and it is so frustrating! I'm perfect example that someone who haven't begun learning English as a small child, and haven't lived permanently in English speaking country can sound like a native speaker, at least most of the times. 😉 In my case it would be "classic" RP with bits of glottalisation when speaking fast 😃. I've met one more person like this. So, when one makes an effort, it probably happens from time to time. 😃 My tip for learning any accent? Think about a language like you would think of music. It has its own pitch, rhythm, melody and, most importantly, set of sounds. Good luck! 😃

Ciekawa kwestia :)

19:11 The funniest things of all is that English native speakers can teach their language worldwide without any qualifications... Most English native speakers don't know a lot of linguistic terms (like sequence of tenses, not to mention the names of English tenses, transitive verb, etc.) And they very often have problems with the English spelling. My tutor on a course for the ESOL teaching qualification, on a number of occasions asked me (a foreigner in the UK) how to spell English words...

All of that information is USELESS when you're on the street. Watch this documentary, specifically the section immediately after this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9KcdNOYxrLLd3U.html Look at this teacher, she called her books "smelly". That means they stink. Not good. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aM2RnbmDttqUhaM.html I was the same way as you were in your stories, I used to help my Aunt who's a history teacher in College correct the grammar of her students when I was in fourth grade. Now I'm wiser than that.
@xxnario7286
@xxnario7286 4 жыл бұрын
@@einarabelc5 I went to check the meanings of "smelly" on Merriam-Webster. It says that "smelly" means "having a smell". Although the synonyms are of negative meaning. Also, maybe while speaking one doesn't think about grammar, but I, for example, need grammar explained well in order to learn a language. This is how I learned English and some Korean. This is how I'm learning Russian now. It isn't all useless.
@einarabelc5
@einarabelc5 4 жыл бұрын
@@xxnario7286 Let me see if you guys catch my drift because I'm trying to share my experience and knowledge. I won't hold back using slang and euphemisms so feel free to ask if you don't understand the meaning of something: "Knowing ABOUT something is not the same as having the skill, it is not the same as knowing it in practice, it is not the same as knowing something while having it under your skin without having to think about it." Check this video(just the first 2 minutes): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lbJ5rZCIx9qYpac.html And this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/juBdltJ1stTIaKc.html And most importantly this video from Polyglots: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iLWYkpCDrJmzhps.html I started learning English when I was 4, took about 2 months of classes, then I started listening to The Beatles every day, playing Computer games(before the Internet) and watching movies. Seven years later I took about another 4 months. When it was time to "go to school"(they had just switched from Russian to English as the foreign language) I already had a solid grasp of the English language and didn't need much correction. I can also list the which Beatles song comes after the current on their albums ONLY after hearing the ending the previous one (even if only in my head). People actually made fun of me at school for speaking English and knowing The Beatles. Most of them are still in Cuba living the good miserable communist life. As of this day I've lived in the United States for almost 10 years, believe me, smelly means something stinks. No matter what a piece of paper says. And just to be sure I wasn't being overconfident I asked my native American wife. When I decided to start learning Polish I used Babbel and Skype to chat with a guy from Poznan. He suggested that I start studying cases, that's when I gave up for the first time. The information was scarce, confusing and disorganized and I didn't have access to a teacher. Most importantly I had NOTHING to refer to to understand the "rules". Then I found this video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9KcdNOYxrLLd3U.html And I remembered - wait a minute, I never really studied English that much!! - I saw my mom struggle to learn German for four years and never using it. I saw her do the same with English and she can barely speak a word correctly yet spends much of her time translating philosophical texts. So after writing this plethora of information that allowed me to think more about this argument I've arrived at the following conclusion: even after you study to learn ABOUT a language you have to slowly go over the rules you've learned to convert them into real life skills that are actually useful. So the knowledge about the rules is actually useful, but the skills to use them are different from that knowledge. The problem arises when you let Theory prevent you from getting the actual skill instead of enhancing it once you already have that skill. Once again, the number one argument Polyglots use: Children do not go to school to learn to speak, they go to school AFTER they've learned how to speak. It's all about when you learn what in the process. Acquiring a language should become first, learning details that "explain" a language should come second. Again, using history and logic. People spoke BEFORE written language was invented. As far as I know there were no rules before people spoke. And if you want to know more about how this works in the human mind then I strongly suggest you watch this IF you're interested in human psychology and the actual creation of rules: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nJOniqV41JzFYg.html Below are some examples that also compare theory to practice that show the exact same pattern: That's why music theory is not the same as improvisation and composing on the fly doesn't require you to go out and check a music theory book but you can actually break those "rules" in actual music performance. I use that comparison because there's an eternal struggle in the music learning world between playing with "feel" and from your "ear" vs using music theory. Same goes for playing this game: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i72HabKXtdSRnZc.html vs. Reciting from this Encyclopedia: www.amazon.com/Beatles-Encyclopedia-Bill-Harry/dp/0753504812 For the record, there are no cases in English, just like there are no articles in Polish. "Castillian" which is my native language does have something similar but we never really studied them like so and even though I got A's throughout my entire school year on Language I forgot MOST of it because I've had to learn so many more things throughout my life and I'm not a professional linguist that uses that analytical part of language as an actual skill. Is not MY tool. Like I said, I used to help my aunt correct College history exams for grammar I can barely remember now.

nice to hear Arlena speaking English. My big recommendation is to be exposed to the target language ( the one you want to learn as much as possible). I am sure you search for something on google every day. Why don't you try to check in English? :) Speak to your friends who study English in English. Record voice messages. Your phone, change to English. Laptop? ... etc. And the most important..,. Remember you are wise and smart and learning is the process. All English teachers learn too for the whole life. We are ONE as the society, as the souls in human bodies. We are here to grow. We are here to help each other :) I really like the fact that these days we can communicate in English almost everywhere in the world. English allows us to travel, to talk with people from different cultures. It's amazing. I am very grateful for my life. And you? What are you grateful for? Peace and love beautiful people. :).
