About 10 years ago I was deer hunting out of state roughly 500 miles from home and staying with a friend in a small apartment . When out one morning in the rain on a remote section of dirt road I encountered the most gorgeous young, full grown TWC. He was walking aimlessly up and down the berm of the road, occasionally crossing over and changing sides. His head was up and he was N0T scenting the ground. Having had Beagle before myself I immediately recognized this posture as, "I'm lost"... and visually seeking my master along the road. I pulled over on the berm some distance from him to observe. He did N0T attempt to approach me at all. He was probably quite familiar with the sound of his owners vehicle. After a bit I drove down to him. He showed N0 interest in my vehicle, but he did inspect both side windows for his owner. I pulled over and got out and walked toward him. He instinctively shows momentary interest by standing more errect and prancing in a tight circle to allow me to examine all sides of him and possibly identify him as my own. He was clean, like he had just been bathed and groomed except for his muddy feet and wore N0 collar. He came over toward me, then trotted hopefully to the passenger door of my small, single cab T0Y0TA Tacoma pick up truck. Obviously this wasn't his first rodeo. I identified him instantly as a "Walker". He was handsome ! Yeah, I'd thought about it momentarily, but it just wasn't possible, hunting for two more weeks with nowhere to really keep him

That's a VERY nice voice on that Walker dog. Do you see how he howls when he's happy? That's your job--getting him in a situation where he can be happy. Ever turn him loose outside the dog park on a track? You couldn't make him happier. They are bred to hunt; it's deep there inside them. At least let him chase a squirrel or a rabbit. He won't go far. If you really want to see him have fun, turn him loose on a coon. I also like his name. I currently have two Blueticks and a Redbone, so I'm nutso on coonhounds.
@Brandratalks773 жыл бұрын
I let him lose at the dog park. If I did that in a non fenced in area I’d never see him again. He doesn’t care much for squirrels. They walk right by him and don’t phase him. Now deer however get him all excited! 🤣

@pdan623 жыл бұрын
@@Brandratalks77 that makes sense if you rescued him from someone who only used them to hunt. They really can be great all around dogs. Dotty loves to do whatever I'm doing, great for tug, fetch or obstacle course but hard to feed the chickens work in the garden cut wood etc. She can learn to help in some of that I think.

We have a coon hound that looks like that, he leaks around the eyes too, Ours goes crazy when he sees or smells a cat, I was told it’s common for them to be trained using cats when the dogs are puppies, Is your like that too?

i’m so sorry to comment after a year of this post but we just adopted a walker coonhound just like yours and he’s CRAZY. i mean i don’t know what to do because i think we should’ve researched this more. how is yours so calm? please help we might have to bring him back.
@Brandratalks772 жыл бұрын
The first few weeks were rough until we got into a routine. I had no idea what kind of dog he was and he was wide open when I first got him. He got some CBD treats the few months to calm him down, and long walks and trips to the dog park. He’s almost 13 so he’s calmed down a lot in the 3 years I’ve had him. It started out hell but he’s turned into a really great dog. Someone had adopted him the day before I did and brought him back that morning. How old is your dog?
@abbeyd18902 жыл бұрын
@@Brandratalks77 he’s 2 years and was a stray. we have a 9 month old black lab also so it’s a mess. we got him thursday and i’m just not sure what to do. you saying that makes me feel so much better. i just know that their breed is harder to train.
@Brandratalks772 жыл бұрын
Also crate training is important. For the first couple of weeks I had to put Cletus in his crate when I ate or he would try and take the food off my plate. I would also crate him when I was asleep and when I wasn’t home. I still crate him when I’m not home but I don’t have to crate him when I eat or at night anymore. Also I took him to daycare once a week for a while. Never let him off leash unless in a fenced in area. TWC’s are hunting dogs first so they will by instinct start following scents and will not come back to u . That’s probably how we ended up with these dogs because they wander off hunting and can’t find their way home. I had no idea what I had when I got him. So I understand. But it will pass. When u walk him he may put his nose to the ground and pull u some and howl like he’s on the hunt. I just let mine do it to get it out of his system. They’re bred for that. It’s part of them. They had to work for their keep in their previous lives and probably never lived inside. So it’s an adjustment for them too. Good luck!!! It’ll work out. You’ll see!

Great name!!!🤣🤣. I’m not sure about the climbing your back. They are bred to “tree” wild animals..so basically chase them up a tree and hold them there until the hunters arrive. Maybe she’s treeing you???😂😂
