My female is the same way, if I lay on the grass she will snuggle up and try to lay on top of me, and wants to cuddle any time I go out to the coop. It's a super sweet feeling getting luvs from a turkey.

I understand this..........we have a hen that jumps the fence to follow Wendy down the road......she now gets to go on regular car trips...especially to go get ice cream.....Maria the Barred Rock Hen.........

He was telling you he wanted to be part of the family. I have animals we raise for food but once in a great while one like Tom comes around I just don't have the heart to put them down. He's a sweet turkey

It sounds like you know just how we feel. We were planning on keeping a few of these for breeding stock, but we're here in harvesting month and so far can't bring ourselves to process any of these birds. Cuddle Tom is our favorite by far, but we have a few that are close to us.

We're seeing the same thing with most of the groups of animals we bring onto the farm. So far the only animals that seem more fearful than friendly have been chickens. You'll get a few that are naturally curious, but nothing like turkeys, pigs, goats and the like.

These really surprised us as well. If they were more prolific egg layers, we would replace all of our chickens with turkeys!

So sweet. We had a rabbit like that named Creamsicle who followed me around like a puppy and snuggled, totally different from all our other rabbits. It's really cool when we have a super unique animal like that. All the turkeys look happy and the alfalfa is so green!

Really curious as to where he ranks in pecking order within the flock. The photos gave me a good laugh, he just can't seem to get enough of you guys. What a sweetheart.

Great question and we were just talking about this yesterday. He's probably number 2 overall. We have another favorite we call BT (for Big Tom). He's the guardian of the flock (and us it seems the way he stands between us and other things). They duke it out from time to time and Cuddle can hold his own, but he's not the Top Tom.

That is so true. You can see them literally search for the alfalfa and also the larger leaf, perennial grasses.

Kelly, we never thought of that. It's funny, because they do gobble to different sounds. Now to determine the best genre. We're more country fans than anything else, but I imagine the beat is important.

They would all do that if you let them. My sister's chickens do the same thing. No more eating them. They all know their names and they use a litter box.

One of the odder facts of farm life, when I was a kid, we didn't ask Mom what was for dinner, but who. You know kids. New litter of bunnies, they all had names. Litter of pigs or a new calf, the same. But, you may have found your flock sire. hasta, kids!

We're trying to figure this one out also. The plan was to keep 5-6 and have a breeding Tom for the Jennies. However, we're in harvesting month and can't bring ourselves to process any of these guys!

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Best tempered tom. Hens, the friendly but biggest ones. Not the fattest, but the good-sized hens. The wise Scotsman always gets his neighbor to thin his turnip patch. And now, I'm not going help here! Chickens, mebbe, but not these kids...I mean birds. :)

We've been really surprised by these turkeys. We've had several rounds of chickens (not including plenty of broilers) and chickens are just not as naturally curious and "friendly" as these guys. The key seems to be spending plenty of QT with them.

We've found that most of them are pretty tame and as long as you spend some time with them when they're young, they pretty much follow you everywhere!

They're definitely getting big. Technically this month is the full grow out period for this type of bird, but we just haven't been able to process any. It's more than we want to keep as a reproducing flock, so we may cull a few. Key word there is "may".

@@kylanve really not sure on that one. This is our first go round with turkeys. We've read they lay more seasonally and quite a few less eggs than a typical chicken would. I think the eggs are similar in size to chickens, but turkeys seem to be much more aggressive grazers, so I assume the eggs would really be packed with nutrition.

Bingo, that's exactly the plan. We actually have 2 Toms that are on the keeper list. This one is #2 in the pecking order of the males, so we're keeping the top 2.

If his offspring are anything like he is, they will be very popular. You might make a bit of money selling the eggs to people who want to keep pet turkeys.

The white turkeys are bred to only have one good year. Longer than the factory chickens, but still pretty sad.

The turkeys you're seeing here continue to breed viable eggs and they're on their 3rd year here on the farm. These are Holland White heritage turkeys though, so that is probably the difference.

@@EdgeofNowhereFarm Oh, that's good. I have been vegan since 2020 when cancer nearly destroyed my liver. My company gives frozen turkeys to everyone and I asked if I could get a live one from the local farm instead. After that was approved and I did some research, I learned the typical white industrial turkeys don't live much longer than a year since they are genetically modified to grow so big and fast.

I am a new vegan and I grew up being the biggest meat eater, when I saw the torment and torture and extreme cruelty of 99 percent of all poultry farms, I was disgusted and I never looked back

I can completely understand your point of view. We are not vegans, but this is why we raise our own animals, so we know exactly how they are treated. Now, Cuddle is still alive and well with his 4 favorite ladies.

@@CarmonaAlmeida we sell turkey eggs and have also sold poults (young turkeys) to customers. They're also very popular during our farm tours for guests to watch and interact with.
