when you leave him by himself at the house leave the TV on or the radio just so its not dead quiet when he is there on his own. gives them a bit of comfet

Agreed! That usually works well. Also don't make it a big deal when you leave the home (i.e. don't give him lots of cuddles and kisses), just leave casually so it doesn't create extra anxiety for him

It’s hard but leaving him by himself will teach him to rest during those times & he will learn that you always come back ❤️

Get a routine for leaving him so he knows. My routine with my dog ted is, walk him, put the radio on for him, put his calming defuser on, put him in a contained area and then little treat before you leave. The more you leave him the more he gets used to it. He learns that your coming back. Using things such a Kong's filled with treats to keep him busy while your gone. Also I try not to let the dog see me leave so distract them with food. Hope this helps! Not a pro, just a dog mum💖

this video made me tear up so much🥺I had a golden cocker spaniel called Jasper but we unfortunately had him put to sleep due to heart failure in September 2021 and Rufus looks SO much like him🥺

a tip for seperation anxiety: when you come home, and he gets really excited/jumps all over you, try to ignore him until he calms down!

The last puppy from the litter usually is very clingy and needs extra attention and love as they've spent the most time with the mum.

My dog is 16 years old now and I take him everywhere with me and this year i went to Nova Scotia and I took him on a road trip or when I do go on a all inclusive resort for a week I miss him like crazy and get anxiety it so hard but dogs don’t know time and you are lucky you have loved ones go care for him and I leave h with my mom which we call granny and without my parents he’s the only one that watches him being a dog mom is the best thing ever and whenever you have a bad day your dog is always there for you.

that colar and lead and harness is so cute xx also you should get him a collar so then you can put his name tag on it and you could even get an air tag for it as well :) hope that helps

Definitely still get a collar & a little name tag with his name + phone number on it. Also to put their yellow tag for their registration (with city of Gold Coast) 🥰

Hello you guys, first of all I am super happy for you guys. I am already obsessed with Rufus. I haven't watched the full video yet but I still want to mention one thing: Even though you guys sound super excited, it also kind of feels like you are not that well prepared for getting a dog. I might be wrong but buying everything a day before and mostly going for "cute" items & hoping your orders "will arrive in time" does seem like you are a little unready. Obviously this might just be my perception (and this is only a few snippets out of your daily life/ thought process) & I also acknowledge that it was very spontaneous but since you have such a huge (& deserved) following maybe next time you guys consider incorporating a disclaimer where you inform that getting a dog is a big commitment & something you really have to think about. No hate at all! Wishing you only the best.🧡

you've just answered your own question- it was a quick decision to get him because they weren't looking to buy a dog so why and how would they have been able to buy stuff in advance. As soon as their landlord said they could get a dog they went and picked him? They weren't going to buy stuff before the landlord had confirmed. The main part is they had everything before Rufus arrives so what's the issue lol

I just thought that it might be a good idea to communicate to the audience that a dog usually shouldn’t be a decision that you should make in a few hours/days. They might be the exception but there are a lot of people who underestimate the commitment that comes with getting a pet. :)

You should leave the tv on for him or even a radio for some noise, they love sounds especially the kids channel on tv it makes them feel like they aren’t alone :)

Ziwi peak is amazing food! Big dog pre made raw is also great! We feed big dog and meals for mutts biscuits!

He needs time to settle in. At the moment he’s relying on you for comfort because everything is new for him and it’s scary! Give it time and take it slow. He’ll settle in eventually, it may take up to 3 months.

If you rub his toys with your smell, it helps comfort him when left alone, my puppy when we got him, his toys had been rubbed with his mum's scent and it helped him sleep when we first got him

Just don’t get the cheap dog food. I use prime 100 and science diet (specialist recommended for my Cavoodle - yes he has a specialist lol).

Don’t say goodbye to your dog when you leave because your talking to your dog excites him and then poof you are gone. Just make your coming and going a natural thing. You can take turns that when one of you leaves the other calmly makes his toys interesting without getting him riled up. You want calm when you leave. Music (tv, dog tv videos, radio) helps. Have toys available. Leave water out. Contact your vet to see how long his puppy bladder will last.

Unfortunately there are many not so good/ bad things in this video 1. adopt don’t shop 2. You should always get to know a dog before you just take him home Even though it was a long way to pick him up you should have visited him at least once before you just take him with you 3. you definitely weren’t prepared for him. Get everything for him before he arrives ask the breeder what kind of food he uses (you can still change the food once he’s settled in) 4. definitely go to dog school and get a dog trainer 5. don’t just leave the dog alone without training. You should train the dog on staying alone in slow steps and not just leave him when he’s not trained and not used to his new home
