In recent years, excavation of the moat surrounding the Tower of London revealed two skulls. The remains of torture victims perhaps? Out of favor noblemen who lost their heads?
No. These are the skulls of two Barbary lions once indigenous to West Africa but now extinct. Carbon dating places them in about the 14th Century AD.
How did these lions end up at the Tower of London?
The secret will be revealed in Museum Secrets: Inside The Natural History Museum.
Living Symbol of Power
Until they were hunted to extinction, Barbary lions were highly prized for their unique features: a physique and temperament that set them apart from other more familiar African lions. Ancient Romans employed Barbary lions to fight gladiators in the Colosseum. Centuries later, kings and queens of England bred them as a living symbol of power. They were royal pets, kept in cages at the Tower of London, along with many other exotic animals.

Looking @ these lions it's instantly recognizable they are a different subspecies than what's running around in sub-Sahara Africa currently. Their faces are totally different & their eyes are larger, as well. They are absolutely gorgeous lions. It's a shame they're no longer in the wild!

These lions would look dirty" and mange ridden on their own. Lions here are groomed and fed a special diet by staff. Many people are fooled here they assume lions clean themselves like tigers and jags, leopards do. Lions aren't clean.

Just to inform you, 5 barbary Atlas Lions were born and in good health in the Temara Zoo in Rabat, Morocco. Starting from ferbrary 2022, visitors can see the new born Atlas Lions.

@@daddygravely4673 those in rabat zoo are actually .. because they never interacted with other races since thzy were kept in the royal palace that use to get atlas lions from atlas villages as a symbol of loyalty .. so they only had atlas lions their ... and by the scientist they have the purest DNA of a barbary lion plus their bones structure is similar to the barbary lion plus their appearance as will

I think they are way cooler looking than typical Sub-Saharan African lions. Definitely. They look much more 'regal' and majestic, as the guy said in the video.

These are the most rarest, most sacred genetic Lions in the world. Just when we thought the were extinct… It’s awesome now knowing that a specific bloodline and species has been preserved. Hail the Barbary Atlas 🙌

Their faces look very different from other kinds of lions. Somehow more expressive, like how one would intentionally draw a serious lion face. Truly majestic creatures.
