My father sent me a shoebox filled with black walnuts from his house in Indiana. I planted several at my house the day my firstborn came home from the hospital. One thrived, growing to 50 feet, at least. I sent a shoebox of walnuts from that tree to my son when *his* son was born.

Hello Stephanie - nice to finally see your face - hope to see you more in future videos. My favorite heirloom plant I have are some iris that I inherited from my mom. I remember them from my childhood home, she gave me a few (that turned into many) when I purchased my own home, and now I moved to a new home and brought them along with me. When my mom passed, I found a picture of my grandmother's garden in Michigan (from about 1950, maybe earlier) and low & behold there were the same iris in that beautiful garden. So I am assuming my grandmother passed them to my mom, my mom passed them to me and one day I will pass them to my daughter. They are my treasures for sure.

Nice to meet you, Stephany! When I moved into my house 10 years ago, there were some blueberry bushes in the yard that hadn’t been cared for and were as tall as trees with hardly any berries. Through the years we have pruned them, and now they’re bush-sized, producing lots of berries, and a real treat in summer. When I renovated the kitchen behind the countertops I found a hand-written recipe card for blueberry muffins from the 1970s/1980s, and photos of the former owner (who has since passed away.) I wish I could share with her that the next generations of children come over and pick blueberries from her plant!

We have some on our property. We moved in in 1998. They were grown up as well as muscadine grape vines. We cleared them up and have plenty of blue berries (that is if we get much needed rain). The grape vines have been an ongoing battle.

Yes it's cool to see in front of the camera the camera person we hear mentioned in Jim's videos. I lost my avid-gardener mother last year in March and before we sold her house I dug rose campion, iris, hosta, daffodils, columbine, ginger lily, true geranium and my favorite, confederate rose, to put 15 houses to the right of hers in my garden. When they bloomed, and as these grow, my heart swells with emotion, and grief, and joy, and love for her and for the garden..

Awesome to meet Stephanie, love the hostas from her Dad. For me, the humble Tiger Lily reminds me of my grandmother - born in 1895, gone these 40 years, but come June here in New York the Tiger Lily brings me into her wonderful garden once again.

We have an oak tree that my dad brought us, had volunteered in a pot and he wanted us to have it (he couldn’t throw anything away). He promised my then 5 year old son 25cents per bucket of water to keep it hydrated. My dad recently passed away, my son is now 24, and the tree is easily 40 ft tall😊

I have a red maple and some beautiful double flowered daffodils from my grandparents' garden is MA before they moved down here. Both have passed now so they're really special to me. I also planted a bunch of bare root daylilies this year in honor of my grandma because they remind me of her, and I have a couple baby redbud trees now in honor of my uncle who loved them. My birthday is in April, on Earth Day, so I am gifted a lot of plants that can be popped right into the garden. Each gifted plant is a reminder of the person who was thoughtful enough to think of me. 💕

I'm one of those people who gets an emotional attachment to most all my plants. I've gotten them from others or they remind me of a time in my life. I've got 17 year old Hellebore from a special dog's garden. I'm gifting one of my huge Elegans to a dear friend this week, digging the 15 gallon hole is up to her 😃 And then there's the stuff planted on pet graves or to commemorate the loss of friends & family. I guess they're ALL special to me. Good to see your face Stephanie!

Me and my sister recently purchased my grandmother's home. We have moved several of her roses after cutting down some 40 year old pecan trees that were threatening the house. They really did well in the new spot. I love my granny's roses, hydrangeas and hostas. Dahlias were her favorite though, and I am trying my luck with them this year. If my memory serves me, granny had a hard time growing them and they became an ongoing project for her.

Nice to meet Stephanie. I have two heritage plants in my garden I would like to mention. The first is a bearded iris that came from my brother's house. The previous owner on his own home brought them from her mother's garden. I figure the original parent iris is at least 70 years old. The second heritage plant is my aunt's peony. She passed away last year and I transplanted them late winter and to my surprise, I have flower buds this spring. Thanks for the great videos.

Nice to meet Stephany, I have irises that go back to my great grandma. I got my "start" in high school when I helped my great aunt separate hers. Her start came from her mother, so I consider them my great grandma's irises and Aunt Nezzie's irises. I have moved some with me twice - and mine need to separated again. I also have a rain tree another great-aunt gave my grandma back in the 80s when we were visiting Marietta. My aunt hid it in the trunk because my mom didn't want to take it. Long story short, it got huge over the years. I dug up a volunteer and brought it to this house with me in 2017.

Hi Stephany! Yes, I have several plants that I originally started from cuttings or seeds from my Dad's garden as well. One is a beautiful red tropical hibiscus that is very different from the hybrids you see today. I grew it from cuttings at the house I had for 30 years and then took cuttings with me across the country to my new home and am growing it as a houseplant here in the Seattle area. There was also a very unusually colored Madagascar periwinkle that was growing wild at my Dad's house (as a weed really) and I dug up seedlings and started them at my house many years ago. Again, I collected seeds before I sold my home and am growing it here in a rock garden at my new home. I love having plants that remind me of my mom and dad and my time living in Florida. I also grow Four O'Clocks because they were the first flowers I grew as a child in Florida. Violet, my next door neighbor growing up, was the person who taught me how to garden and gave me those first seeds. My mom really wasn't a gardener, so it was very kind of Violet to take the time to teach me. I always think of Violet when I'm planting Four O'Clocks!

Oh, I love seeing Stephany join in the video portions now! Awesome! I have several plants that I have "carried" with me from different homes over the past 20+ years. One very special flower is an iris from my family's old home place in Texas. The iris dates back to the 1920s when the old home was first built. I'm blessed with what I call a "friendship garden"; many plants that have been gifted to me over the years from dear friends. I can tell you where each plant came from and why it means something to me. Odd?? Perhaps, but I think there might be a few others out here that share the same feelings about their friends and the plants they received from them.

I have a beautiful claret colored iris that is special to me. When my youngest son and daughter-in-law bought their first house they had a very sweet neighbor, Tommie. I admired her beautiful iris when I first met her and a few months later she divided them and sent me some. Fast forward a few years...guys working on her driveway scooped them all up and threw them in the dumpster while Tommie was at work. She was heartbroken as her late husband had given them to her decades before. Because she had shared them so generously with me, I was able to give her some back. She was thrilled to have them. Tommie has passed on now, but I remember her fondly when those iris bloom. I call them "Tommie's Claret"

I treasure a lilac start from a bush in my deceased paternal grandparents’ yard. 🤞that I get flowers next spring. From my mom, in addition to a general obsession with coral bells and hostas, I have actual hostas: June, Mouse Ears and what she calls “the old-fashioned hosta.” We have purple/yellow bearded iris from one my husband’s uncles. Then there are the plants from friends… so many gifts! By the way, your garden makes me feel better about my lack of “drifts” of single plants. Jim calls himself a “collector” and that’s me, too!!

Passing down the love of gardening to the next generation is so important. Stephany I love that you honor your Dad by caring for some of his plants❤️Surprisingly none of my family predecessors were into gardening that I know of. I am though, and all of my kids, now adults, all love to garden and share plants! One of my most special plants is a Japanese Maple my son planted for me on Mothers Day a few years ago. I love to watch it grow😊

My gardens are a walk down memory lane. I have out of my Mom's garden: Azaleas, Lilacs, Lenten Roses, Mock Orange, Iris, Snow ball bush, and an over 20 yr old orchid-not in the landscape but an indoor plant. She had a green thumb and started all these plants from her own so I could have them at my gardens in my newly built home. She passed 22 years ago and I still miss her but my flowers always remind me of her. I so enjoy your channel because of its no nonsense approach to gardening and that you give your location, zone, and the time of year you are filming.

My dad and mom were avid gardeners, so when they both passed in the 90's, one of my eldest sisters dug up many of their Day Lily, Iris and Hosta before selling the house. Fastforward to 2 years ago, I bought my own house and with a lot of work, have begun to have my own garden. My sister divided and gave me a share of all of my mom and dads flowers and they have all done so beautifully. I also got several cuttings off of 5 Camelias from my nephews farm, only one survived. I have no idea which one it is but it is happy and growing. I look forward to seeing it bloom.

Hello. I am just south of Raleigh and am in the beginning process of transforming a natural area in our front yard to include more pollinators. Your channel has been a great wealth of inspiration and information. An heirloom plant that is special to me is the common red amaryllis. My parents always had them in their yard when I was growing up, and I always thought they were beautiful. When my husband and I purchased the house we're in now, my mom gifted me several bulbs. I found out when she gifted them to me, that the bulbs she started with originally, had come from my great grandmothers yard. I have these planted up by the steps of my front door and am always very excited when they make their appearance each year.

Hi Stephany! When my mother in law passed away in 1999, my sister-in-law dug up some of her Lily of the Valley plants and planted them around the base of our flowering cherry tree. I wasn’t interested in gardening at that time, but every spring they return and bloom beautifully!! They remind me of her every time!! Now, I love gardening and the lily of the valley are amongst my favorites ❤️❤️

Hey Stephanie! Well when I was 7 in the second grade Ms. Sawyer gave me a paper sack that had bearded iris in it. Fifty six years later I still have them. I also have some native flowers that my grandma Todd had. I kept the seed in my freezer for 40 years and still have flowers every year that come back from seed started by those. I also have some crepe myrtles from my mother she had planted at her new home in 1973 that a lady that was in her 80's at the time had given her. Thanks for the memories!

Hello Stephanie. We have heard your name occasionally, and it's nice to see your face. Yes, I have several family (heritage) plants from my husband's family. We are currently in the process of transplanting a Rose of Sharon from my mother-in-love's yard to our yard. This plant started in her family sometime in the 1960's, in upstate Pennsylvania. (Several members of the family also have "off spring" of the original RoS.) My MIL is now 90 and living in West Texas. My husband and I want to move to it our place to continue those memories. :) Fingers crossed that the plant lives through the transplant. It's been at her house since sometime in the late 80's!

I have several plants (peonies, forsythia, spirea, lilacs) that were from my mom and one special rose from my paternal grandmother, grandma died 100 years ago this month. I had a hosta elegans that I bought at the grocery stores spring plant sale that I loved and shared with my sisters. It was massive, the deer also loved it and destroyed mine as well as my August lily. Heritage plants have a special place in my heart and bring sweet memories of childhood home.

Hi Stephany! Plants that have special attachments are the best! We make sure they are well tended to sustain those precious memories. I have purple iris from my Moms garden. She would grind the leaves from her yard and bag them up for me to use as mulch in my new home (30+ yrs ago). Inadvertently a small piece of iris came along in the leaves and surprisingly took hold without being planted! They are now sprinkled throughout my gardens and I look forward to them every year. She also gave me some of her peonies that are still going strong. Thanks for sharing your stories and asking about ours.

I have so many heirloom plants in my garden! I started collecting plants from friends and family as a cheap way to get my garden started. But as my garden has gotten more mature, it's been amazingly special to see these plants grow. Of them all, two of my favorites: a gardenia that was propagated from my mom's garden and is one of her favorite shrubs, and a Nikko Blue hydrangea that was gifted in memory of a family member who died last year.

Hi, Stephany! I have a few gardening tales…My paternal grandmother taught me about gardening very early in life, but I don’t have any specimens from her gardens because I have moved to many different zones since then. My parents were city folk and had little interest in gardening. As I moved about the country, I have had more and more extensive gardens, and I remember often what my grandmother taught me! First, out of graduate school in New Jersey, then when I took a new job in Texas. I have been here in North Carolina since 1986, and now when I move to a new house, many of my plants come with me! I am particularly attached to my gorgeous camellias!

So nice to me you, Stephanie! Kudos on the great camera work you do! I have a sentimental connection to Sweet Betsy, aka Carolina Allspice. While not a beautiful shrub, my grandma had it growing next to her front porch and I can remember the sweet scent wafting through her windows on hot summer days. I sure hope my kids will harvest memories from my garden when I’m gone. 💚

I had some bleeding heart in our front yard. It would bloom fairly well, but it died back once the weather got hot each summer. I realized some years later that it grows better in the shade. I moved the struggling plants to the north side of the house. They are now gorgeous and huge each year.

I have a bird of paradise from my Mom's house. I live along the Mendocino coast in California and it really isn't warm enough for it so it stays in the greenhouse. It is out growing that space though so I might try a piece of it in a protected South spot.
