Judo world champion Huh Mi-mi was born in Japan, but decided to give up her Japanese citizenship to compete under South Korea’s colours. The decision, made nearly three years ago, was in keeping with her late grandmother’s wishes. She is now training hard in hopes of earning a gold medal for South Korea at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

And whats the issue here? If it's wish then she should do it. There are tons of athletes born in foreign countries who still compete for their motherland.

She has a cute Japanese accent. Japanese cannot pronounce many consonants so when they speak korean or foreign languages they sound like a cute baby.

I heard about her from how drop and flop performance against Deguchi... who funny enough is a Japanese woman who competes for another country. I am able to enjoy the match a lot more, knowing the silly story of it now.

Many Zainichis in Japan have been maintaining their heritage as Koreans. And as it said in the video, her grandpa was executed by Imperialist Japan and those descendents of freedom fighters hold stronger patriotism toward Korea. Wouldn't it feel weird to compete under the country that has discriminated their families for generations? She chose Korea, because she wants to compete as a Korean. Simple
