Few artists can convey infinity in a brushstroke or can tease out presence from the void. The source of Korean artist Lee Ufan's work begins in childhood, where he was raised with strict Confucian ideals and schooled in poetry and calligraphy. In the early Sixties, having moved to Japan to study philosophy at Nihon University, he emerged from a creative milieu as a leader in the Mono-ha (“School of Things”) movement; an aesthetic theory that rejected Western modern art. The movement also explored the properties of natural and industrial materials to show their dismay at the rampant industrialization of Japan... I understand it's a bit confusing because of the title! He is korean, but had a huge impact on Japanese contemporary art and Korean contemporary art. He was born and raised in Korea. He was affiliated with the Tokyo-based movement of young artists from the late 1960s through the early ’70s known as Mono-ha, but also had a huge impact on contemporary art in Korea post 1970's and onward. Probably could have been cleared up in a more tasteful title?

IMO the title shouldn't really address his nationality as he is a nomadic (in a sense) throughout his career. Yes, born in Korea but spent a huge amount of years in Japan, and now he is based in Paris. He even said in one interview that when he was in Korea, people disregard him as Korean. When he is in Japan, people said he is an outsider. This in-between situation has somewhat impacted him and his art career.

U-fan Lee's works have equal value as forgeries and originals. Gallery Hyundai, Korea's largest gallery, sold a large number of forgeries. In addition, at least several hundred forgeries were sold on the market through various Korean galleries. When it was exposed by a South Korean court in 2016 and 2021, the artist seemed embarrassed, but within days acknowledged all the forgeries as genuine. Collectors in Korea purchased items based on the authenticity certificate, but the certificates were also fake. However, ufan lee recognized even those works as genuine. Korean collectors are afraid that the value of the works they own will drop, so they tolerate collusion between artists and counterfeiters.

The title is confusing that he is a Japanese artist. He has been affect on art in East Asia though. Please correct it. The language he speaks in the video is Korean. His name is Korean. And he is a Korean.

This is a film about the Korean artist. Would you select French music for a video about an English painter? Or Spanish music for a Greek sculptor?

Minimalism is hard to imagine as a “spiritual inspiration”. If he was doing modern expressive calligraphy then maybe I could read that comfortably. This was also filmed in a way that struck me more as theater rather than art.

I feel like what's most profound about some of what he said was the stuff about living within our means or with less, the time approaching for humans to reach a level of net 0. It'll be the only way to save humanity. Idk, shits just been feeling like its spinning outta control, and by things I mean we.
