Ryan Sandes shocked the running world when he won the 2017 Western States 100 - this is what it took to win one of the gnarliest races in the world.

At the end of June 2017, shortly before the sun peeked over the mountains of Tahoe National Park in California, Ryan Sandes and 368 other runners from around the world gathered at the base of a snow-covered mountain to begin the Western States 100 Endurance Run. South African ultramarathon star Ryan Sandes has earned the prestigious honour of winning all four of the 4Deserts events.

As a South African who loves sport, I'm sad that I've never heard about this guy... Amazing performance

Stefan, considering how he became a runner, his story is crazier still. In a nutshell: he entered the Knysna marathon on a whim (sort of in reply to a dare by a friend) and discovered that running came easy. I know it's a totally different ball game, but would like to see him at Comrades or the Washie one day

@@janswart2705 That's absurd! Yeah, don't think he'll win it easily and also, I think road running is way too boring for him lol

There's lots of candidates for this title, personally I would put both Barkley and UTMB before this one even though the fact that it was the first real Ultra does weigh in its favor. If you allow triathlon then Norseman here in Norway is pretty far up there as well.
