Hundreds of Mennonites, a secretive Christian community, have started three new colonies in the Peruvian Amazon. Members of this austere group recently migrated to Peru from Bolivia and Belize, where they have long-established populations. But now they’re being investigated by prosecutors in Peru, accused of illegally deforesting more than 34 square kilometers of rainforest over the past five years. CGTN’s Dan Collyns reports.

Yes but though they should have reforest as much as possible to avoid the deforestation In an earlier documentary we can see them arriving in their new land, it was still pretty much forest even without the greater logs, they really made a huge hole in the forest...

Odd... my comment got deleted, where I pointed out that loggers cut over 26.000 km2 of rain forest in the past 20 years.... saying the Mennonites are the major contributor with 30 km2 is like saying I contribute to the majority of national water consumption by showering.

I think it's crazy that people are complaining about deforestation. These people took one bit of land in the most secluded area possible to farm and cultivate for their livelihoods, and get complained about. But when I look at JUST California on google maps it's COVERED in so many deforestation patches that at a certain zoom level it looks like a very low resolution and pixelated picture of something green. The hypocrisy is truly beyond words now.
@Riotdrone

it doesn't matter how secluded it is. monocrop fields like this might look green but they are ecological wasteland. i'd much rather farmers from california and peru and everywhere share their produce so we can preserve jungle that is critical for biodiversity, the soil and the atmosphere

@@TiddlyBlinx the relationship between 'productivity' as we currently understand it and the environment is a hostile one. we are literally destroying the means that sustain our own life, and the life of every other species, in the name of productivity. true productivity would include living in harmony with the world that sustains us and not spending our lives in a cancerous mindset of infinite industrial growth on the back of absurd wastefulness and shortsightedness that sterilizes the world and drives us crazy with work. also indigenous americans are literally a bulwark against this sort of thing. in the north and the south. to say that they do more damage is very ignorant. it was estimated that indigenous resistance has cut carbon emissions in canada by a third of it's potential. they get slaughtered in south america for resisting deforestation

A week ago, I saw 50 mennonites at Peru’s Jorge Chavez airport coming from Belize and moving permanently to the country. They will be a great asset to the rural communities in the Ucayali region. I told them “WELCOME TO PERU”. And they said “THANK YOU”. PERU has vast extensions of undeveloped land that need to be farmed. Mennonites are the best at turning them into farmlands. It seems that many mennonites are moving to Peru from not only Belize but also from Mexico, Bolivia and Paraguay.

what are environmentalists ignoring? deforestation is a massive problem. especially for these precious places that remain untouched by industrial society.
@n.trushaev5132
@n.trushaev5132 2 ай бұрын
@@Riotdrone Mainstream environmental discourse tends to ignore quite a lot of the major problems, and there's even a term for it "green washing". A lot of supposed "environmentalists" also support development policies like New Urbanism, which has grown very popular in recent years especially on KZfaq, and which advocates for eliminating zoning laws and deregulating the housing and construction industries to allow developers and landlords to build more housing, more quickly, at higher densities. They call this process "upzoning" and it is often justified by highly questionable appeals to environmental or social justice concerns. Needless to say, eliminating zoning laws and building regulations would greatly increase the volume of construction and deforestation, while reducing the precautions taken during such projects. Some scholars and environmentalists have criticized these practices, but they've gained a lot of ground amongst the general public and less scientifically informed individuals who might genuinely be concerned about the environment. There are plenty of similar examples too. E.g. a lot of environmental activists claim that eating meat is a huge problem and one of the main drivers of climate change, but we have tons of data on these matters and it's quite clear that cows and goats are not the problem. In fact, if you look at government reports and scholarly research on the issue they tend to echo that position, but the fossil fuel lobby and other greenhouse-intensive industries that produce a lot of pollution have been really successful in convincing the general public that it's not huge skyscrapers, and factories, and jet engines, and shipping cheap products thousands of miles across the globe that is the problem, but rather the cows. Don't get me wrong - there are significant problems with modern farming but those problems are mainly related to factory farming and the used of pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones, etc. Factory farming absolutely should be eliminated and replaced with more sustainable forms of agriculture, but the idea that cows or meat consumption are one of the main problems is just ludicrous, is not supported by the actual scientific data, and is being used by multinational corporations and billionaires to push the blame for environmental destruction onto individual consumers, and thereby eliminate corporations and the government from blame or scrutiny. There are many other examples too.

They bring hope to the locals, often doing more to improve their communities than their own governments or the elite foreign conservationists who are so offended by them. Because they are “white,” and “Christian,” they are an easy target.

I saw that, too. The facts, although not in depth or complete are fairly accurate, except the Mennonites did not deforest the land they bought. The trees were already down from prior owners. The Mennonites are just an easy target of a corrupt government with a history of cheating it's citizens out of money and land. Read about the land washing scheme and how they cheated their residents out of 80% of the value of their land. Land that wasn't even owned by the government anymore. Makes me sick.

I like these people. There might be some issues, like with the deforestation. But for-profit deforestation is no doubt a much bigger harm to this planet. The mennonites just needed some space to live and work the land, they are not going to tear down the whole amazon like modern society tries to do. Seeing the tremendous obstacles they tackled to find a new place to live, it's kind of idiotic eco-warrior nonsense to say that "it doesn't work like that", as if they couldn't just accept that the damage has been done (unintentionally) and to work it out cordially after the fact. Isn't legal action just another sign that for modern society it's all about the money, not about the rainforest ?

I think it was extremely selfish of the adults to completely remove the children from society. They are now imprisoned, i in a rain forest, within their father's dream.

@@tylersheppard9601 In my case, I'm not complaining about they established there; but Mennonites must abide the laws from the country who brought them haven. If there appear a Catholic priest settling in your backyard and proclaim that your backyard is now property from Vatican - and not yours -, how would you feel like?
