This horse was bred in Vermont and was originally meant as a work horse. Pictures I've seen show a much different animal than what is now considered a Morgan.

I had an old school morgan who was 14.2 hands and he was more of a dog than a horse he loved tug a war with a towel he left a mark on alot of lives forever he was old school in every way strong steady the smallest kid was safe learning from him if I fell off he came back nothing could catch him in a race he would cross deep rivers loved to swim and was unparalleled in rough terrain as good as any donkey he lived 28 years and was sound his entire life he was jumping 3 ft jumps into his early 20s amazing guy pure heart

If you want to experience a taste of what made the Morgan an extremely popular and useful horse from the 18th century on, get a traditional Morgan -- Lippitt or Working Western lines. The steady, loyal, but sprightly personality of the old style Morgan is what made it the American family and farm horse par excellence. If you want a horse that looks and acts like a Saddlebred, get a "modern" Morgan.

In several of his science fiction novels, Robert Heinlein writing about settlers tackling a new world always included Morgan Horses. See especially "Tunnel in the Sky".

One had a certain gate that could resemble that, but not really. They were just beautiful on their own.

Not every morgan can be trace back though all it's lines of decent to Figure. During the late 1800's horses were registered as Morgans that had NO Morgan blood See: Kenneth Tellford, The Origins of the Modern Morgan, 1988. (This book is not commercially available) Mr. Tellford spent some 15 years researching the history of the Morgan and for serious Morgan breeders, his book is their guide. Also see the Morgan Horse As I Found Him. This was published by the Museum of the Morgan Horse as is a reprint of A. Fullerton Phillips notes on the Morgan. I found My copy on Amazon. I've owned Morgans for 13 years now. The more you get to know them the more you appreciate the Old Type Morgan. I started out with a modern Morgan but quickly moved to the old type and now own two old type mares and a Stallion.

I have a few old postcards of A. Fullerton Phillips's horses. What do you think of foundation Quarter Horses and Morgans sharing the same blood? I guess they might. Thank you for the book referrals. What do you mean that the Tellford book is unavailable.? I like the old type Morgans.

@@lynnehuff9659 Tellford's book is out of print. You might find a copy from a used book dealer such Alibris. Some other good source of old type Morgan Information is the Lippitt Club, The Lippitt Morgan Breeders Association, and The Lippitt Horse Registry. Re quarter horses: Some old Western literature say that cowboys favored horses with barrel chests, solid bay, brown, or black. If it has one white foot, buy it, two white feet try it. three or more forget. Sounds like Morgan blood. The US government ran a Morgan breed operation for the Calvary. So it is possible that some quarter horses had some Morgan blood, However quarter horse short burst of speed, for roping. Morgan are long haul horse, for working all daylong.

@@regieendsley9750 Thank you for that, Reggie. Both books look interesting. The A. Fullerton Phillips book appears to be very scarce, now. When I was growing up, I'm 72, Figure's lineage was stated as unknown. I find it queer that his is positively known as being by True Briton, now. I guess it doesn't really matter.

...and the reason why "modern" Morgans look a lot like Saddlebreds, is because they DO HAVE SADDLEBRED breeding....many bred to Saddlebreds to have the longer neck and height, and claimed illegally their crosses were 100% Morgan. Now, with DNA that cannot happen anymore within the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA), and thankfully, there are breeders working hard to preserve the original Morgan, their beauty, strength, and temperament. .

Sorry, but today's so - call Morgan's lack the configuration to be considered. Big heads like the Walker. I did grow up with two Morgan's. Saddle was optional.
