Peninsula Open Space Trust - POST

3 жыл бұрын

Join Peninsula Open Space Trust in welcoming US Geological Survey (USGS) researchers Richard Kim and Elliot Schoenig who will share their knowledge of this elusive and beautiful local snake. You’ll hear about how the USGS, in partnership with POST and other organizations, has been conducting research and habitat restoration activities around ponds on the Peninsula that are the snake’s preferred habitat.
Sadly, the SF garter snake is still federally listed as an endangered species. And what makes things even more complicated, one of their favorite meals is the California red-legged frog, federally listed as a threatened species! But with partnerships and dedication, we hope to continue the recovery of this striking blue, orange and black snake.

Thanks so much for sharing. What great information. We live up hill about 2 hours away in Calaveras county. We have beautiful garter snakes here but not as colorful. My first time learning about this beautiful species. Thank you for all your work protecting & studying them. As well as the information you share.

I grew up on the high side of Highway 1 on the SSF side. There was a field behind my house where you could find garter snakes all the time. There were rabbits and frogs and probably stuff we didn't even know about. It was the first time I'd ever seen a fossil in real life too!

Its a shame that these snakes cannot be brought over from Europe and be kept by hobbyists.
