Not really, Rome conquered the hellenes and decided to keep their culture thus mixing it with its own, "Byzantium" was just a continuation of the Roman empire but without the western administrative part, they weren't their own empires, just two administrative parts that made up one empire and it was nothing new, emperors divided Rome on several occasions to make governance easier.

Well yes, the "Byzantines" called themselves Romans. Not to mentioned that Constantine moved the capitol to Constantinople when he reunited the empire for the last time. But you have to agree that the culture and society that continued on in Constantinople after Rome fell was a fusion of Greek and Roman. That's why those two ancient cultures are the "parents" of our favorite medieval empire.

Roman culture was a fusion for a long time, the romans revered greek culture long before the creation of Constantinople and greek was one of the most important languages in Rome long before Constantinople, it was the main language in the eastern provinces, especially near Attica so it was natural for the romans, after having lost nearly all latin speaking provinces in the 7th century to remove latin as an administrative language to make managment easier.

Adam Baker Byzantine empire (named after the emperor Byzantium) was the survived eastern part of the Roman Empire that on the last years of existence was divided between Western Roman Empire (survived until ca. 500) and Eastern Roman Empire (that felt only in 1453)

@@xano2921 but the eastern part of the Roman Empire was largely Greek and around 620 AD Emperor Heraclius made Greek as the official language of the Eastern Roman Empire replacing Latin as the official language of administration. Also thanks to the latest TF2 webcomic we found out that Spy is Scout's dad Red Spy: Roman Empire Blue Scout: Eastern Roman Empire/Byzantium Scout's Mom: Ancient Greece
