A decade ago the tiny island fox was on the brink of extinction. Now, thanks to a radical reordering of its California island ecosystem, the fox is coming off the endangered species list.

I went to Catalina island the other day, and I got to see one of these little guys. I am so happy they were protected and cared for with such determination, foxes are amazing creatures.

Saw quite a few of these little guys about 8 years ago when I went camping on the islands for a week. They’re cute but be advised they’re also little thieves so it’s best to keep your food and trash in safe, fox-proof containers.

To all of you speaking like they went genocide on the boars. They didn't. The boars were not native to the islands, they flourished and brought other predators that tore at the island. The foxes WERE native. They didn't commit genocide because the boars still exist naturally where they were supposed to. What they did was undo a previous stupid human mistake to allow the islands to return to their original ecosystem; with the small grey foxes. This problem of non-native animals causing a muck is a world wide problem. Foxes are killing Australia's Little penguins because they were introduced there and shouldn't have been. Foxes are by far my favourite animal and they are magnificently beautiful creatures, but perhaps they should do to the foxes on phillip island what they did to the boars in this video. It would save the little penguin, who is native, and return some equality to the ecosystem. If you wanna be mad, be mad at the dumb humans who introduced these animals to the wrong places in the first place.

Fun fact, these guys are thought to have been at least semi-domesticated by the indigenous peoples living on the Channel Islands. That's why they're so tame and docile to the researchers

They have no fear of man or of predators due to ecological naïveté. That’s their Achilles heel but its also their salvation because it’s easy to round them up and keep them out of danger.

During the last Ice Age, there was a huge island off the California coast and their mainland gray fox ancestors walked across the frozen ice bridge to the island. Then the weather warmed, sea levels rose and the once huge island split into its present fragments. Due to the requirements of island life, the gray fox shrank drastically in size and developed into different species on the islands on which it lived.

Are you always sarcastically critical or did you make an effort to understand why the feral pigs were eliminated? It has nothing to do with which species is cuter; before man released pigs on the islands, the foxes flourished. As is often the case, human actions messed up the natural balance and nearly caused the extinction of a species. This program simply reversed that mistake.

How about przewalski's horse then? One polish guy comes and "discovers" these wild horses in 1878. Then comes devils in the disguise of western white man. After century of poaching, this animal went extinct in 1969. But no that is not the end of story, that fucking poachers who resulted extinction, now comes out as angels telling locals how they are going to revive that animal. At least that animal survived and now flourishing but for 30 years, it was extinct in its only homeland and one has to think of primary reason this animal went extinct. Yet now that same culprit is heralded as the savior. That is bullshit and fucking hypocrisy.

They do not look at the individuals only on the species. So in their mind it is totaly fine to kill as long you do not endanger the species, so an endangered species is more worth as other species. And possibly they think a "cute" species is a ton more worth. What a mimdset like this does to our world? Go and look at the news
