This is basically a selection of clips from Radiohead's 1998 Documentary, 'Meeting People is Easy' which focused on Radiohead's difficulty to deal with the tedium of 'rockstardom'.
At this time, Thom Yorke was near breaking-point and also suffered depression, as is clearly evident in this video.

Honestly, I'm a bit annoyed with all these "Such whiners" comments. The fact that they became succesful band in a very short period of time, doesn't mean that they automatically had to become happy lads. Ironically, MPiE shows that this point of view is very far from truth. Sucess doesn't make you happy in this business. It makes you dull, depressed and apathic or melancholic. Cause soon you realize the only good moments are concerts. And apart from them you're touring, you have dumb duties your record label put on you, you have to talk with hundreds of journalists who ask you same exact questions, you're percieved through prism of a one song you actually hate at the moment, you're arguing with your friends who can become enemies and your "dream job" goes to shit if you don't watch your tongue. And on top of that with every day you're more certain that nobody understands you or what you say through your art. And all the media watch your every little smirk, anger, laugh, mistake. Yeah, fucking great experience, no doubt.

I think the issues is there's a rising number of Fame-Hungry Wannabes, or at least that mind-set. These people would love to be famous on the strength of "one song", or "one gimmick" and then they'd milk it for everything it's worth. If they can't make it as musicians, they'll get into TV Presenting. Or appearing in Soap Operas or other Acting Gigs. Anything to hold onto the fame. So they don't understand why Thom is complaining.

Well they certainly shouldn't whine so much after being one of the greatest bands ever. There are other great bands who are not at all whiny and are very good at what they do.

@@prakharpant1711 The thing is that some people are into the showbiz aspect of the music industry and others aren't. The members of Radiohead (especially Thom) are a group of pretty mellow guys that don't necessarily want to be put up on this fame pedestal with all the extra baggage that comes with becoming a sensation almost overnight. They just want to make music and share it with the people who like it.

@@childofthesun32 you see that, especially on more sensitive people. This is the people that suffer morr in this business. Especially in music industry. See Chris Cornell. See Kurt Cobain, See Layne Staley. Soundgarden and Radiohead don't have so much differences in their stories. Except that Soundgarden had broken up in 97. But they start both suffer from success.

Thom is trying to talk to Johnny and Ed about how he feels is hard to stomach. He's so close to a complete mental break-down it's painful to watch it and see the pain of anxiety, confusion, and anger in his face. I've been somewhere similar and it sucks. You spend your time trying to figure out the point to everything. I think it's a process everyone goes through at time, but it shouldn't come with all this attention and fame. That must have been hard. Everyone comes out a better person though.

How terrible it must've been to be going through a depressive episode, or breakdown or whatever, and have to do interviews, photoshoots and be expected to live up to people's image of you or be amusing and interesting. I've been through something similar and I could just be alone and get through it. This movie always makes me so happy that I'm not famous, and so glad that they survived this and seem to be much happier.

I have to be honest though without this experience, none of their later albums would be as good as they are or they might not even exist. Kid A was just their complete middle finger to the manipulative music industry for how they torture ok computer's promotion period. Kid A is insanely awesome and i don't think it would be like this without that experience.

Just record it and upload it to KZfaq. It's pretty easy. Who cares if people don't like it or don't listen to it. There's so many KZfaq Musicians out there, that chances are no one will even find you anyway. I know of several KZfaq Musicians that are fantastic at their Instrument AND fantastic Song-writers and lyricists and yet they're nowhere. No one has really heard of them. They have hardly any views. Being good won't necessarily get you anywhere on KZfaq and conversely, being bad doesn't mean you won't get popular. All you can really do is upload your stuff and get it out there, able to reach people all over the world.

these clips honestly hurt me so much. i couldn't even imagine what it would be like to go through life at near breaking point, but in the public eye. it must be so wearing, so heavy on the soul. it's only now, twenty four years into the future, that you are actually able to feel more at peace while watching these clips-knowing that they're safe and knowing how much better they're all doing now, especially thom. i thank the world for eventually having mercy on him, i don't know what i'd do if he wasn't still here. i genuinely believe he's one of the most brilliant people to ever walk the earth. radiohead saved my life :')

@plshelpmeawkdough
@plshelpmeawkdough 6 жыл бұрын
Lukease they wanted to be known for their music unfortunately this was the 90s and one hit wonders were everywhere so after creep and before OK Computer they were classified by many as that. Creep took over Radiohead and they became tired of it considering they had many other great songs at the time but not many people cared and just came to the concerts to listen to that song and would leave as soon as the song was over. After the release of OK Computer Thom was hoping to break the mold of being a one song band but they didn't expect how big that album would become in such a short span of time and Thom wasn't ready for that kind of fame yet, he was hoping to catch a break afterwards since they had already done a 16 month tour promoting the albums release but instead was forced to do interviews and more tours which eventually got to Thom.

+Jaffar - Thom and Grant Gee (film director) and a few other people show up to a club for an afterparty; bouncer doesn't recognize them and doesn't remember there being an afterparty for Radiohead scheduled, so leaves them on the other side of the ropes while loudly asking around if Radiohead is supposed to be let in... so Thom says 'Didn't mean to put you out', and they leave. Other guy working for the club comes out, says 'write a song about this, right now' and yells 'Creep' and 'Dickhead' at them, which are titles of old Radiohead songs but are also mean things to yell at someone you just disrespected. Its a bizarre moment, one of many that Grant Gee captured for this documentary about how tough the OK Computer tour and fame was on Radiohead.

Separate nations I lived in: 7 Different cultures: Don't know, but probably 10. How much do I know about the states? Well I lived 10 years there. I was under the massive cultural and politic influence the states so gladly apply to the rest of the world, so I'd say I'm pretty much aware of the states MO. The constant fact that people there refers to the states as the world mixed with ignorance of the foreign and arrogance makes most people say things like that. Most of the time in pure innocence.

Woodsy Owl They went through a lot of things that most SUCCESSFUL bands go through. They are the most successful band today. No other band compares, but they really didn't go through nothing special.

fenryx0 they never expected to become as famous as they did, people would go to their concerts and wait for them to play creep then leave, they are all kind of socially awkward (especially thom), they were also given a lot of shit because everyone thought they would be one hit wonders, all of that can lead to some pretty deep depression

Woodsy Owl Yeah but nowadays people know better, creep shouldn't be played live anymore. IMO Thom has matured a lot since In Rainbows.
