I think I just heavily relate to the idea that "assuming a Mood" helps me think more laterally and open my mind more to possibilities, as well as increasing my ideas and perceptions. I don't think the original gag behind Meg was to be that she was grotesque, as the new seasons try and fail at making a joke of, rather the stereotypical unpopular girl you'd always see in a show or movie, not necessarily unattractive, rather just.... not sought after. There could have been many a joke using this premise instead, but they'd rather go for "Meg is the town punching bag, Meg does not have anything good happen to her for a prolonged period."

Fun fact for the Americans, most Australians have never been to an Outback Steakhouse. There's currently 698 in the states and only 8 in Australia despite our countries being similar in size.
