I first saw a Mack after the war. They were N.R. 10's and were used in the timber industry. They were the greatest and carried this country for many years. Most were supplied by L.J.Gleeson of Wingham N.S.W. He used them to excavate the Inner Harbour Port Kembla. Probably the best collection of N.R.'s are at Cleary Bros. Port Kembla. They were the most.

Cheers, yeah, most trucks on long haul in the top end hold 1500 - 2500 liters plus sometimes a trailer belly tank of another 1000. Mainly because fuel is so expensive once you leave the city and with 3 trailers @ 120 tonnes gross you will only get about 1 km/liter which is 2.3 miles per US gallon.

Some road trains in Australia push the gross mass to 150, sometimes more tonnes. The longest ones are in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, where up to four trailers are allowed on public highways. Three of those trailers are usually full length, with a fourth half length

It used to be Kenworths you saw the most of in Australia, but that's changing. Freightliners and Western Stars are growing in numbers. There are some Macks around, but they're not the commonest make. Even euro trucks such as Volvos are getting a bigger toehold on the market here

Horsepower 101; the more air you can suck into an engine, the more power it can put out. The twin air intakes on top of the twin air filters isn't just for show. Air higher up has less dust, and is cooler. Cooler air also makes a difference in power, or turbo engines wouldn't have intercoolers.

@kennjohnsen we dont generally run big sleepers over here due to length restrictions. the lengths are as follows - single trailer 19 m (62.3 ft), 2 trailer 36.5 m (120 ft) and 3 trailer 53.5 m (176 ft). These are all maximum allowable lengths. If we ran large U.S. style sleepers we would need to use shorter trailers to meet the requirements.

Highway trucks these days usually have 10 stud alloys, but roadtrain trucks and trailers still often use spider type wheels because it is easier for changing tyres. Probably overall 50/50 spider/10stud in new trucks/trailers.

@CreRay Yes that's my truck at 0.45. The 4 trailer, 22 axle (86 wheels) road trains are the most common roadtrain for Shell & BP fuel in the N.T. They are a B-train + 2 trailers and 2 dollies. The one in the vid is 2 B-trains joined with 1 dolly, so it's smaller than normal. The trucks are tri-drive (3 diffs).

As in Ingersol - Rand the air equipment company. I would buy old equipment just to rebuild and install. That actually sounds fun and easy. In-fact if you have any of those parts for a Mack 262 I would by them.

***** Air starts are more reliable as long as you maintain them, and they spin the engine faster. Alternators and batteries last a lot longer and the electrics are simplified. You can get a muffler for them if you want. They use them on oil rigs and trucks in remote areas where reliability is paramount. If you get 15 years out of a electric starter you are doing well. They get nothing like that life in Australia.

The old V8 Macks had up to 610 HP but they don't make V8s any more. The new Macks have either a Cummins Signature or a Volvo-derived engine, both of which can be over 600 HP. A 3 trailer road train is 53.5 metres long max and a 2 trailer road train is 36.5 metres max.

@gm16v149 From what I heard, strait from an old school Australian truckie, they rarely used the sleepers. They would rater sleep outside as the sleeper would turn into a sauna in the Australian heat. They would use it if the weather permitted or it was raining (rarely). So that is the explanation I heard. Dont know how true it is but like I said that answer is strait from the horses mouth.

If you can sort through the work visa issues, there's plenty of work in Western Australia, and quite a variety of it. From farms, to mine sites, to long haul work. On long distance runs you usually have a co-driver, and you could travel more than 1000km in a day with some jobs.

I would be watching it on a iPad or other tablet because it looks crap at the moment on a PC. I've contacted YT so I hope they fix it. The air start tank is separate from the main air tanks so it doesn't usually run out of air, but if it does we carry an air line which we can hook up to another truck, or hook up to 3 tyres which will give enough pressure to start the truck.
