The program (besides the normal Manung Hutna) will surely serve as an effective platform to have more elaborate discussions & debates on various serious issues prevailing in our chaotic state, Manipur. It wil also be interesting to see "innocent/uncorrupted children and state loving civilians" questioning the responsible authorities of the state/nation in the presence of the various learned intellectuals. The idea of Manipur is similar to the idea of India itself, built by many different ethnic groups, even much earlier than the idea of India. Nonetheless, the political, cultural, economical and social dominance by majority Meiteis for so long have created a feeling of alienation among the tribes of Manipur. Manipur = Meitei had become a concept in the minds of tribal communities in Manipur. When the tribal communities were not educated enough in the hills, the concept of one's democratic rights were not fully understood. But, when the tribal leaders became educated, they encountered their roles in the state's functioning marginalized. Such a long suppression of rights and desires of the hill tribes by majority Meitei politics at Imphal have created the concept of Manipur unfavorable for the hill tribes. For example, many Tangkhul leaders wanted to be a part of the Manipur culture in earlier days, but years of alienation drive some of them to identify as Naga and shifted affiliation to other entities such as Nagaland/South Nagaland/Nagalim. Similarly, Thadous, Paites, Hmars as Chin-Kuki have began to affiliate with Mizos, Zomis, etc... Furthermore, the smaller tribes are in a dilemma among the major tripartite majorities of Meitei, Naga, and Kuki. Meitei Pangals though attach to Manipur, do they really trust the majority Meiteis have been a question in recent years as well. In addition to all these complexities, the separatist politics of Underground groups also have complicated the idea of Manipur itself. The sense of belonging to a Manipuri by tribes in Manipur is minimal now as their culture and tradition are not fully represented or incorporated into Manipuri tradition and politics. But, Manipur is an old concept for all inhibitants of Manipur. The divide and rule are new politics in recent history of Manipur since the British entered Manipur, followed by annexation by India. On top of all these, since 1972, when Manipur got statehood, successive govts at Imphal have involved in so much corruption that the hill and valley villagers have no opportunity to participate in politics and bureaucratic job recruitments. The problems in Manipur now are due to corruption at Imphal, at least a major factor. Developmental works had been minimal in hill districts. Not to blame, the hill politicians themselves have also abandoned their own constituencies and people in the hill and have settled at Imphal. This is because there are no facilities for their kids for education, healthcare, roads, cultural activities, recreation, etc., in hill district headquarters. Treatment of hill and peripheral valley people at Imphal as Hao and Lawai (may not be derogatory words origianlly) but used as demeaning to the peripheral people has been a heartburn for so long. Though, this has become obsolete or minimal at present, still a long way to go in social integration of all communities in Manipur. The Manipur story is a long historical journey, but new story is more complicated with vested interests lurking in all directions. Such programs are a good initiative. As mentioned, some major tribal languages such as Tangkhul, Thadou, Paite, Rongmei, should also be familarized to Meitei communities as well instead of brushing together as Hao, Naga or Kuki as a whole.... Language is one common idea of Integration, but politics of dominance separates societies. The political dominance of a land by majority community is not new in democracy. But how the majority politics accommodates minority participation in politics and culture and promotion are important. The dominance of politics by majority in a state is not only in Manipur; Nagaland or Mizoram are no different. But, the tribal and non-tribal politics and culture play a bigger role in these states. Let the people of the land come to senses and bring a peaceful society..... A continuous dialogue and civil interaction are needed for Manipur. Avoid name calling first.....
