MEGA Vintage Locomotives eBay Lot - Will Any Run?

I was browsing eBay a couple weeks ago and found this lot of vintage ho scale locomotives being sold for $52 bucks. I quickly purchased the lot however I didn't know much about the condition of each engine and there was a strong possibility that some of them were just shells. It actually turned out to be far better than expected as they were all complete and some were even in working order to some extent.

A super video. I love seeing the locomotives from my younger days. After reading the comments, including some that know what is what, this could help. That Geep is a GP-18, and for SMT and fans, unrebuilt Geep locomotives with four cooling fans on top were GP-7 or early GP-9 locomotives, while two meant it was a late GP-9 or GP-18. SMT, I bought a Bicentennial F-7 locomotive from Mantua/Tyco, and it had a "special" Australian version of the MU-2 drive, which was quite good and also very different from the standard drive, including different size axles and pins to hold the brushes, and is the only one, out of many Tyco locomotives, that I have ever seen. It still operates on my railroad to this day, almost fifty years later. You might check that out. I also bought a used Tyco GP-20 in the CB&Q (Burlington) paint scheme, which still runs well, even outside, because I was modeling the Q, only to find out decades later that, and not to dash any modelers dreams or be a rivet counter, ONLY the New York Central had GP-20 locomotives without dynamic brakes. I did eventually buy a used dynamic brake housing off of an old Lionel GP-9 and mounted it up top, and it looks great. Thanks and hello again from The Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

P.S. My railroad is hard on the locomotives I own. Things like traction tires, band drives, cheap motors and exposed gearing get destroyed pretty quickly, especially when running outside, and a lot of my early purchases were converted into dummies. There is nothing wrong with having a locomotive with only some of the axles driven, as long as it is well constructed. I have changed the wheels on some so that I don't have to replace the traction tires all of the time, and on my Mantua/Tyco 0-4-0 steam locomotive, I was able to get a Jewelry shop to fill in the groove in the wheel with silver, which actually made it run better. I still run ten locomotives with traction tires and belt drive and exposed gearing just because they still run well, or I like them, but the extra maintenance is a pain. Some of them are restricted from running outside anymore, but they run great inside, so that works, and it gives a little bit more operation to change the locomotives before the train goes outside. None of the newer locomotives have that restriction, as they usually have enclosed gearing and all wheel pickup, and I am careful to buy locomotives without traction tires anymore, if the locomotive comes that way. I sure do wish that there was a place around me that sold boxes of trains cheap, but usually I find just a few cars or locomotives for way too much money. 💙 T.E.N.

omg... the little SF switcher at 2:45... I had that exact loco on my layout back in the early 80s. All my trains are long gone. So good to see it again.

My dad was an HO enthusiast. We had many engines and spare cars over the years. He bought any and all he could find. If they ran, we built shelves to show the running engines. And shelves for the non running. I love your channel. It brings back memories of dad's trains and layouts. I would be like you by buying them and repairing them to restored condition. But as the years now fail me. I still love the rail enthusiasts. Keep showing these. I love them and it does bring back memories. I will bet it brings more to your channel soon. Thank you.

The 'Spirit of '76' section from 16:20 is the funniest thing I've seen all day. "Don't let looks deceive you" he says, not sounding very convinced at all, just before the aforementioned bag o' bolts zips off into the distance at a rate of knots... Nice to see you didn't waste your money anyway. Great video!

A fun deal and yes, that Seaboard diesel is based on the real thing which came to Tallahassee, Florida during the bicentennial tours and I was able to see it in person. I have the Lionel O gauge version. Keep on Railroading.

Tyco used to include handrail kits with their locomotives. They got cheap around the mid 70s and went with Power Torque motors, less detail on the body and no handrails. Great video, lots of future projects. Keep up the good work!

I have a number of Tyco locomotives on my railroad, and all of them came with metal handrails, ALL of which had to be installed by the new owner. Tyco did switch to cheaper plastic and even no handrails on some sets towards the end, but there is a good chance that if your Mantua/Tyco locomotive doesn't have handrails, then they either fell off or were never installed. 💙 T.E.N.

The first UP F unit is an Athearn from the 70s-90s. Before around 1970 they used brass wheels.

The Seaboard Coast Bi Centennial locomotive is a AHM GP18.

Athearn UP F7A #1467 Yellow/Blue box era. Note the truck and wheels as they don't use the square bronze bearings. The trucks are all metal. Bachmann F9A. ATSF GP38-2 #3500 (Santa Fe never owned any freight version EMD 4-axle in high nose or painted them in Warbonnet scheme). It's NOT a 0-4-0 as it does not have side rodes!!!!!

The real life Seaboard Coast Line 1776 was actually a GE U36B. Later became CSX 5764.

Seaboard coast line did have a 1776 locomotive, but it wasn’t painted on that same locomotive. The real one is a U36B and that (I think AHM) other one is a GP18. Awesome Video!

It could be a gp18 high hood locomotive as well not sure on it. Believe there almost identical to the gp7 and gp9.

Seaboard did have a bicentennial unit, however, it was not an EMD, It was a GE U36B.

Many railroads decorated locomotives for the American Bicentennial in 1976. Most were repainted in the 1980's.

Dang man that’s a nice haul I also have that Santa Fe blue and yellow emd f9 and a red and silver c430 by mantua tyco as well as a Santa Fe ge u36b no 350 by bachmann and in n scale but no 353 as well as some bachmann emd f9 s in ho and 1 in n scale. Also I used to have that life like Santa Fe emd gp38-2 high hood. Thanks for sharing this bud. I hope you could get them fixed when you have time.

That Athearn will run for sure, only real issue I've ever seen or found was the plastic axle gears cracking, I actually have a few bags of new gears just to make sure my old engines are covered and any new ones I get will be ready lol. I have no issues buying Athearn locos from anywhere as long as the parts are all there you can 99.99999% of the time get it running with minimal effort. They run forever and even if you get that .01 engine with the motor that's bad it's an easy and cheap fix and most of these can pull a good amount of cars that are all weighted to regulation. Great video!

Very cool lot Harrison! One of the sets that Santa Fe GP38 is featured in came with the afore mentioned powered unit, a matching dummy unit and about 7 cars plus track and scenery pieces. I was able to find the set several years ago and bought it for $10. Although it came in a plastic bin and not it's original box, it's in great shape! It's possible the handrails on the Mantua GP20 are aftermarket ones. I had one years ago and it came with plastic handrails. Also doesn't surprise me the Bachmann Santa Fe FT locomotive ran, I have one that I bought at a yard sale for 50 cents and while in far worse cosmetic shape, it runs great and it's all wheel drive too, even has fairly decent pulling power for an old Bachmann locomotive!

Seaboard Coast Line had a lot of their rolling stock painted in the Spirit of 76 livery around the U.S. bi-centennial anniversary. I've seen pictures of several locomotives and a full passenger train in the livery, what I've seen are one of each RS 3, GP18 (the one you have), GP38, and SD70MAC in pictures.

PRR #5628 is the early version of a GP20 - it has the turbocharged smoke stack and no dynamic braking on top. The Seaboard Coast Line #1776 might be a GP18 non turbocharged non dynamic braking. Great for light weight rails and switching.

Nice lot that you found on eBay. The trip pin on that switcher locomotive with the Kadee coupler just needs to be bent up a little bit that way it won't raise the front end off track. That is a good set of Pennsylvania AA units love the paint scheme. My uncle has that same Spirit of 76 geep locomotive.

What is interesting to note about that SCL GP7/GP9 was that in real life SCL 1776 was a GE U36B built in 3/1971. It served on SCL in Bicentennial Colors until 1979 when it was repainted to FLS Grey serving on FLS until 1986 when it was renumbered to CSX 5764. CSX 5764 would be sold to The Massachusetts's Call/Volunteer Firefighter's Association or MCVX being renumbered to MCVX WLO1 being one of a handful of GE U36Bs to receive CSX's YN3 scheme. Since no pictures exist past 2004 I can only assume it was scrapped sometime afterwards

Some nice finds I have 2 Bachmann locos with that 1776 decorations 200 years of America I also have a matching caboose too my engines are not F 7s or 9s they are kinda like what we see on today on railroads kind of like that black one you showed with the 2 yellow horns on the cab only a bit longer body's 8 wheels not 12 so now you know that the 2 locos with 1776 on them were made in 1976 celebrating 200 years of America

AWESOME HAUL! Bachman Refers the ATSF F units as FTs. The SCL unit is a GP18 by AHM. SCL had a U36B in real life that was numbered 1776. The GP20 is a really good find. Not many model railroaders talk about the TYCO GP20. TYCO did a limited run of the GP20, Really good find!! Keep up your fine talent!

An old train buddy of mine, old in age and acquaintance, had a bin in a tool shed. The bin was full of old life-like, bachmann, and tyco, ihc, and others. The Tyco GP20s were crap. I could not get any of them to run. Out of 30 or so locomotives, I got 8 to run. The cheap powered trucks on the life-like models have plastic wheels, and due to the condition they were in, the flanges broke off so those that I got running, kept derailing. In that group is a bicentennial unit but I cannot remember what railroad. It has cosmetic issues but I did get into working order. I did a lot of lubing,, greasing, and gentle pushes and pulls to free the seized trucks. I could here their motors humming but they would not move. I finally got some of them to run as I mentioned. My career as an otr trainer has caused me to have little time to work on my dcc model railroad as well as trying to fix the other locomotives.

If it's an Athearn, if it was made in the 50's and 60's it would be a rubber band drive and not have geared trucks. The easier way to check all of them would've been to just leave the power at half way and switch them out as you found out whether or not they ran, rather than always powering down each time.

Some of the models from the 50s did have gears, the band driven ones were just a cheaper alternative.

The real Seaboard 1776 was a U36B. That one you have is a GP18. Future reference, GP-9's and 7's have 2 fans on the front and back, GP18's only have one.

Very informative and I enjoy your channel. I believe you did good for $50. I had, back in 1969 the Athern Pennsylvania loco. It had 2rubber bands driving and holding up the trucks. Are those 2 like that? And how many different types of drives do HO diesel's have? Also please explain a pancake drive or direct me to one of your other videos. Best regards, Ron
