You can do couch surfing. Also try Airbnb. Also there are many hotels where you can stay for about 600 Taka. Just walk into to the hotel and negotiate a reasonable good price with the hotel. Just like India you have to bargain and shop around to get a cheap price.

Dhaka, the city of my birth is named after the Temple of Maa Dhakeshwari (Durga). It's a blessed city. Coming from a Muslim family; I am proud of this history and the beautiful name of the temple and the city. There is no point of following any religion if it cannot teach you humanity, tolerance, peace and harmony. Apart from few incidents here and there; we the Bangalis from Bangladesh irrespective of our religious background love to live together in peace. Try to visit, (Dhaka University+ New market) , dhanmondi, gulshan, banani, uttara, (bashundhara residential area + jamuna future park) in Dhaka. When you will visit outside of Dhaka then again I will recommend you some places.

O go to old dhaka and in old Dhaka visit shadarghat, shakhari bazar, tati bazar, dhakesshawri mondir. In Dhaka univerity try to go to jagannath Hall and shahid minar

Whenever you go to dhaka bangladesh please stay in Gulshan area.that area is safe but bit expensive.but old dhaka is not safe.

Next time stay at midway hotel.fakirapul.Single room price around 1200 taka or try airbnb. Airbnb got many options. There is a hostel call super hostel cost around 8 usd per night.

Bro there is much better bus service than the one you took.. it was expensive at 1200 Taka. Maybe because it was a sleeper service. Normal bus fare is around 500 or 600. There are many bus companies like Green line. hanif.. Unique.. Shaymoli etc. Also you can take train to Dhaka.
