The background of this song was a funny story in Ireland as I was growing up. Megadeth were playing a gig in Antrim and a guy was caught selling bootleg t-shirts outside the venue but was allowed to continue as it was raising money for "the cause" which is basically code for the fundraising for the IRA. Not really knowing what the cause meant (allegedly), Dave Mustaine told the crowd "this ones for the cause" and the band played Anarchy in the UK. The crowd was a mix of catholic and protestant people so the song ended with a full blown riot with the band having to leave Northern Ireland and get to Ireland in a bullet proof bus with a police escort the entire way. The song was written shortly after about it.

This song is from one of the greatest metal albums ever released. Its hard to believe it came out more than 30 years ago. The lyrics in this song were relevant then, and even more relevant now. Singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine was one of the guitarists early on with Metallica, before they had a falling out. You will have to check out the song Hanger 18, from the same album. It has an insane number of guitar solos. Also, love the outfit!

This is in my opinion the apex line up for Megadeth. For over 10 years, this line up steamrolled the world.

Almost anything off of Peace Sells or Rust In Peace is a can’t miss. You may like In My Darkest Hour. The live version from Hammersmith in 1992 is incredible. One last thing, make sure you have the lyrics handy. Megadeth songs are deep lyrically and incredibly complex to play musically. I still don’t know how he sings and plays crazy riffs and solos at the same time. He’s probably the only one in the world that can do it. G.O.A.T 🐐

In an interview with the UK magazine Guitarist, Dave Mustaine said that he was inspired to write the song in Northern Ireland, when he discovered bootlegged Megadeth T-shirts were on sale and was dissuaded from taking action to have them removed on the basis that they were part of fundraising activities for "The Cause"

The first part of the song is commentary on "holy wars", the second part of the song is about the comic book character Frank Castle also known as The Punisher

Also a heavy topic, that i think is well lyrical written, in a agressive way, but also in a ask for peace, as what is going on is bad in this topic. My favorite of the Big 4 (Metallica,Megadeth, Anthrax & Slayer) this song is a 2 part story. First “Holy Wars” is about the issues that have plagued the Middle East for years. Second “The Punishment Due” is about a comic book character aptly named The Punisher who was an ex military special ops soldier who had his “wife and baby” k*lord and he sought revenge. Yes this band has a ton of great songs with tremendous lyrical content. 🤘🏻🔥💥🙏🏻

As a Megadeth fan from the beginning way back in the 80s, most of their songs have strong meanings. Most good metal music has meaning there’s topics to the songs. They’re not poppy and lovey-dovey like everything you hear on the radio, they’re not all about some of the things that the rappers talk about, metal actually talks about relevant issues. The singer who is also playing guitar is called Dave Mustaine and used to be the guitarist in a certain another thrash metal band at the time called Metallica until he was kicked out for his behaviour while intoxicated on alcohol. Dave then started the band Megadeth as rivals to Metallica. Dave is an awesome singer & guitarist and never gets the credit he deserves.

For the uninitiated: Dave Mustaine was the original lead guitarist in Metallica (1982/ '83) and he co-wrote the band's first (and part of their 2nd) album... He was fired in 1983 and replaced by lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, who recorded all his leads and parts on Metallica's debut album "Kill 'em all"... Dave Mustaine was a hardcore drug-user and he was volatile at times, and being fired from Metallica prompted him to form Megadeth because he wanted 'revenge' on his former band... Megadeth's debut album 'Killing is my business...' was released in 1985. Mustaine is the primary songwriter and lyricist of Megadeth... 'Holy wars' came in 1990 on Megadeth's 4th album 'Rust in Peace'... Although Megadeth did not reach Metallica's level of commercial success, they were one of the most successful metal bands of the 90's... David Ellefson (bass) was the only consistent Megadeth member from 1983 to 2002... this album featured (the late) Nick Menza on drums and Marty Friedman on guitar. One of the major differences between Megadeth and Metallica was the twin-lead attack of Megadeth and their unpredictable delivery... Also, Mustaine also wrote a lot of meaningful lyrics from politics to personal and social commentary & cynicism... Marty, Dave M and Dave E all wore bullet belts back in the 80’s/early 90s (this is thrash metal attire 101) you can even see James Hetfield from Metallica wearing them in his early career . Dave Mustaine was also in Metallica from 81’-83’. He was fired for his reckless behavior while on tour with them. In turn he formed Megadeth. Thank god that happened or else we wouldn’t have this masterpiece to appreciate.

Frontman Dave Mustaine, formerly the guitarist for Metallica, was fired from Metallica for his drug problems, just prior to the release of Metallica's first album (Kill`Em All, 1983). If that never happened, we would probably not have had Megadeth, which appeared on the scene with their debut album in 1985 (Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good). They eventually became one quarter of what came to be known as the "Big Four" in thrash metal., comprised of Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax.

The belt made out of bullets is a thrash metal thing from the 80s, and is not necessarily about this song, but you got a point there, it is objective and makes sense with the song. I’ve been listening to this album since it came out, it’s the best thrash metal album for me, ever. Marty Friedman (lead guitar) is the best guitar player for me.
